      Thanks for sharing! I agree that watching UA-cam is a lot easier than reading. When I pick up my book, I have to remember the story, and focus my mind, whereas on my phone I can just pick it up and watch funny cat videos 🐱

    I understand you both perfectly, I understand a lot of sources of information including news and I even have a practice every day with ChatGPT during my trips across America. But I really don’t understand people who more older and live in Midwest. Today one older man came up to me , spoke to me and I realized that I don’t know English at all I just nodded and smiled to him.

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  Місяць тому

      It’s normal sometimes to not be able to understand some older people from the country who often use expressions or slang or people with a thick accent. When Mark goes to America he can’t understand some people on the phone and when I go to the UK I can’t always understand the people right away! It’s very normal even for native speakers! I hope that doesn’t deter you, we can joke and laugh about our “lack” of English together 😂

    hi kat and Mark . i hope everything are going great with you and thanks again for this cracking lesson .
    i prefer book books much more to e reader. because digital books really get my eyes tired.but
    physical ones are kinder on my eyes. honstly i haven't read long time as i am always scrolling on the phone . my favourite books are thriller and fantasy ones and i really agree with kat about that feeling which i just couldn't put the book down back when i read it .
    i am devasted to know the result. anyway i think it is good to knock my head off
    let me know spend less time on the phone and pick a few good book out to read

    Hey there ! Now that you've become a part of our daily routine 😅it's OK to be a bit of informal 😊
    Reading O what a captivating title 📚 📖 I have a great knack for reading, in fact ,I can't let a day pass by without reading at least one or two pages , this habit has grown on me for the last few years 😅 when I was at my early 20s, I bought a lot of books related to English literature major from Oscarwild to Virginia Wolf to many more like Shakespeare's plays and whatnot 😅 Anyway, now that Iam at my late 30s ,I've come to a conclusion that knowledge is power and one of the most effective ways to enrich your knowledge is reading 📚 ❤ I read many genres of books from classical to thrillers ...I enjoy the moments in which I seclude myself in my reading Nook 😅 and BTW, I only read physical books for they give me this amazing feeling when turning the page or smelling the pages 😅 I wish I could spend most of my time reading, it's my safe resort ❤

      Thanks so much for sharing! If you have read Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf and even Shakespeare then you might be better read than some English speakers! Those authors write in very old or sophisticated / complex style, so reading them in the original English can be quite a challenge.
      Reading is a great habit - I wish I read as often as you do!

      @highlevellistening  2 місяці тому

      Ah yes, I have heard of this one! That's a really good point about TV shows as well. Often when there is a successful TV show or movie, the book goes into best seller list afterwards!

    Hello! Thanks a lot for the lesson! It was very useful in terms of both vocab and listening practice
    Regarding the questions:
    - Currently I am into Isaac Azimov's books. I heard about the sequel wrritten by him from the guy on the internet. It came highly recommended, so I decided to pick it up. It turned out to be a great read! I really enjoyed the plot, although that's not one of those holiday reads. So if you like action based books with a drop of philosophy - that one is for you!
    - Well, speaking of the last book that I read... Currently I'm finishing the sequel I mentioned before. That's the last book, so I'm kinda excited about the ending. I hope it won't be one of those reads with an open end. I prefer clarity, although books with an open end give room for your imagination.
    - Favorite type - usually I prefer hard books loaded with eeehhh philosophy... I adore books that make me think by raising difficult and controvertiary questions. Every time I get what the author wanted to say or I come across a question that I didn't think about my brain goes like YEEEEEHAAAAAAA. OMG! What a nice point! What a perfect question!!!! Some time ago I was into romantic books, but now I hate them, although I read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen quite often)
    - And when it comes to e-books or book-books (not sure how to spell that) I definitely prefer the latter! I really like the view of my bookshelf with my collection on it. I don't always have time to read but I hope one day I'll finish them all! I really like the way book lies in my hand and, as Mark said, it brings joy to see how you are moving towards the end... slowly but surely! Also I like paperback books because I can leave comments on pages. I know you can do this in e-reader as well, but it's not the same. I have a special bookmark for making comments - it's a thick thread with a short pencil on the end. It often comes in handy)

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  2 місяці тому +1

      Wow - thank you for such a detailed and thoughtful comment! Well done also for using lots of the vocabulary from the episode as well! I've heard of Asimov but never had a chance to read any of his books, but I've heard good things!
      "Book books" isn't really a formal definition, so you can write it with a hyphen in between or just as 2 words, whichever you prefer!

    I'm fond of reading books. I've read "The Good Girl's Guide to a Murder" lately and it was quite alright, actually. It's one of these whodunit stories. Although I don't read many books of this genre, I find it okay. I cannot decide which genre is best for me. I pick up different types of books. Sometimes light hearted, sometimes more kind of belles-lettres. I suppose it's better so. If I got stuck to only one genre, it would be so dull for me. Like when you keep reading crime stories, don't you feel like reading one book again and again? Riddles, suspects, crazy detectives all the time... too many schemes too often :)
    E-readers are very good match for me, but what I like the most are audiobooks. A good voice can really add value to a book. For example, another whodunit by the way what a coincidence 😂, when I was listening to "Cocoo's calling" in Polish it was such a nightmare. Polish actor screwd it up totally. I decided to switch to English version and it was really okay, even despite the fact that I didn't understand every single word!
    So yeah, books rule ❤
    PS. Feel free to correct my mistakes 😂

    • @highlevellistening
      @highlevellistening  2 місяці тому

      Wow - thanks so such a thoughtful comment! I've heard of that 'whodunit' book, but I haven't read it. If you're interested in a book in the same genre, '"The Thursday Murder Club" has been a huge success in the UK and been on the best seller list for a while.
      Also if you want a really good audiobook, I'm listening to one called "Mythos" which is narrated by Stephen Fry, who has a wonderful voice and is the author too. He is the same narrator of the Harry Potter audiobooks as well and is considered a national treasure.
      I also switch between genres when I read. My (Mark) interests roam from history and memoirs to James Bond and Shakespeare, otherwise it can feel a bit formulaic!

    Thank you for another brilliant lesson video! Recently, I have been into reading Clare Keegan's books. The title of the last book I read is "Small Things Like These." The setting is Christmas Eve in an Irish town. It is about helping others against inertia and fear. I can't share the details to keep potential readers' joy. It is not a long read, but it seems like a perfect Christmas fairy tale for adults. It is a quite touching story. There is an ordinary but brave man in the book. I heard that the movie is being made by Cillian Murphy. I hope you to check it out. You won't regret it.
