Great video.Great piece of equipment. This is one of the best sounding solid state I have heard with how the guitar cleans up by rolling back the guitar volume.(old school).I want one.The future of solid state amps.
Cheers Torino, happy to hear you enjoyed this! Steve certainly helped make the amp sound awesome! Hope you get to try Black Spirit 200 for yourself soon :)
I bought an ampman classic a few months ago and love it…. I don’t know how I didn’t know about this black spirit floor. It has so many of the things I wish my ampman could do. And I love that I can change settings from my iPad. I just bought one and can’t wait to experiment (and I’m keeping the ampman as a smaller alternative for when I need it).
Thanks John, it was an honor working with Steve on this and he certainly showed the amp off in an amazing light! Hope you love yours when you get it :) Team H&K
sounds great aggain. steve stine is also one hell of a great guitarist also. it also is very simple to get. Steve's quite the thrasher i see. love it. hear some anthrax, some annihalator stuff. great.
Lots of great, clear explanations on the BSF! Nice to see how easy it is to work up a patch, save it, then even functionally 'copy' it to another location and start re-tweaking. QUESTION to H&K: If he's just set up those seven tones in Direct 7 mode... but then he switches over to either Preset or Stompbox modes... do those first four 'Direct 7 patches' then _also_ therefore become the _default first four patches_ within those other two modes? OR, does using Direct 7 mode instead give you a *specific-to-that-mode-ONLY* set of seven patches? Thx!
Hi Larry! Glad you liked the video. We always love shooting with Steve! Good question :) And the answer is that Direct 7 mode can be whatever you want it to be. The seven sounds you save on Direct 7 mode are kept there, and are not automatically then the first seven presets on the other modes. Although, of course, you could make them that way if you wanted. So yes, Direct 7 will give you a unique set of 7 patches, if that's what you want! Rock on, Team H&K
@@HughesandKettneramps VERY cool! So I could always have my basic set of 7 patches, but then always still go 'back' to the regular Preset mode if I somehow needed to reach for still other sounds. Nice! Thanks for your quick reply, too! By the way, I _JUST_ got my BSF in the mail late yesterday. Looking forward to having some fun today for sure! Thanks for all the informative videos and responsive YT commenting you folks do!

Thanks Dave! Yes, any time spent with Steve is quality time - he's one of the very best in this game, and a lovely person to boot! And that's not a display, it's the Spirit Tone Generator, which is the piece of circuitry that is responsible for all the tones in the amp. We decided it should be lit that color, so it kind of looks like the heart of the amp, because that's tonally exactly what it is. But you're not the first person to mistake it for a screen, so perhaps we should make that more clear in future! All the best, Team H&K in Germany
Great sounding unit! Simple and effective, as most players want things to be. One thing I would personally like to see is IR loader instead, or with red box. I don't know what technology was used in this unit (Nu tube maybe) but FPGA core amps in combination with Nu tube is something that intrigues me for sure. Looking at some new FPGA designs (HX3 organ, Antelope) it is very promising. Anyway, great floor unit!
Thanks for the feedback Silvio! Actually the Red Box is a technology called modes (so not IR), so we'd need to change things if we wanted to allow IRs to be uploaded in future. Which we possibly do, because it's a great idea :) And the Spirit Tone Generator, which is responsible for the sounds, is an all-analog circuit our main designer came up with. There's no tubes (nu tube or otherwise!) involved. We're happy to be a part of the newer generation of amp technology, and we enjoy it a lot too! Team H&K
I've been using Hughes & Kettner products since late 80's (master series preamps mainly) and they are part of my gig rig ever since, used together with my old vox ac30. I can rely on them despite their old age (the quality of build was excellent). So... I'm excited with your innovative solution to common problem nowadays, the loudness and portability done without digital modeling, and best of all it sounds great. Greetings from Croatia!
Wow, so that's quite the experience you have with our stuff! Awesome to hear that you still rely on it today to get the sounds and performance you need. Hopefully they'll bring you many great more years, and who knows, maybe one day you can couple it with one of the newer technology versions and see how they match up. Rock on, Team H&K
Hope someone still reads this. I own this board, use it on stage with the Redbox output. However what I am curious about: Does the attenuator setting (2w,20w or 200w) has any impact on the signal that leaves the Redbox to the PA system? If so, how, what en what can best be used? Besides this, What Cabinet can best be used? I often see combinations advertised of this board with a 100w cab. Does that makes sense? Or does it only make sense when you keep the attenuator away from that 200w? Ow, and a tip. For the next version, replace the printed numbers around the knobs with a ring of leds (and remove the indicator on the knobs themselves). When you change channel, now you cannot see what the actual setting is. But with leds you can just show that. It's way more easy then to adjust the separate channels.
Interesting! And hey, if it works for you that way, that's the best way! The good news is the App and the amp are perfectly in sync, so you'll never get any problems doing it that way either.
Hello, I have the BS200 and it makes a faint "ZAP" noise every 10 seconds while the unit is powered off. Does anyone else have this experience and if so, do you know what it is?
Hi Mat, no need to worry - that's all part of the design! From the manual: ----- Heads up: Black Spirit 200 Floor comes with a universal power supply that works reliably at any mains voltage worldwide and maintains the sound quality wherever you go. When the amp is connected to a mains outlet, it will consume a tiny amount of power - less than 0.5 watts - even when it is switched off. Every seven seconds or so, it will issue a soft chirping sound that is only audible in a very quiet environment. This does not constitute a material defect that can or needs to be repaired. If this sound bothers you, we recommend that you plug the amp into a switchable extension socket so you can flip its switch to cut off the power supply to the amp. ----- So there you go, nothing to worry about, and a solution if you want it to go away :) Team H&K
Black spirit is excellent! And it's seems to me that it totally respects even the character of the pickups...when I compare this video (with active EMG) with other videos (passive pickups) the difference is noticeable...I would say that the Black spirit technology is more responsive and pleasant to the ears with passive pickups, kind of H&K targeted primarily that world. Which is a pain for me as I lately use the Lukather's emg set, which sound freta with valve equipment. In defense of the Black spirit I must say that it sounds better with active pickup than other stuff I experimented (headrush, Helix stomp, etc.), but in th eend I'd relaly would like to see an amp-modeling product that really take into account the active pickups specs (more compression, more brilliant) and let us have a warmer, natural sound. I don't know if that can be solved with specific input impedence adjustements/converters/whatever or it needs more amp design...what would H&K say about that? Thanks

Well, it's an amp that goes on the floor, so in that sense it's similar, yes... but tones and features are obviously significantly different!
