The entity called chaathan, is similar to a goblin, which is enacted by Mammootty. Chathans are also worshipped even now as a semi-god like entity. According to the Hindu religion, they are not evil, but need to be controlled and pleased for benefit. This story kind of tears a leaf into the vedic hymns and rituals, especially Atharvaveda practised even now in temples in South India and rooted within us since childhood. I believe the concepts and the background might be a difficult to grasp for you two and I think for people in the Northern parts of Indis, so maybe you could watch it as just a horror movie.
Multilple corrections. Besides the name Chaathan, this movie has nothing to do with the many chaathan forms worshipped in Kerala. Chaatans are not semi/gods that needs to be controlled, they're The God's for people who follow that religion, mainly lower caste people who consume meat and alcohol and give that as offerings to the diety. Much like Naga worship, chaatan worship was once the prominent religion that existed in kerala before they either got turned into Bhagabathi Kavus or got completely overhauled into different deity like in case of Sabharimala and Guruvayoor temple. (Yes, Guruvayoor was once a kutti chaatan kavu - people who knows, knows)

Exactly right bro@@nikhilkrishnan9 . We in Kannur and Kasargod worship Chatthan (known as Shasthappan, Kuttichatthan) as Theyyams. And you are right, Chatthan worship, along with other Mother deities, Gulikan, Maadan, many Veerans (heroic deities), this was the religion of Kerala even before what we now know as the Hindu faith (Vedic, Puranic religion) came to Kerala.
@@nikhilkrishnan9 the whole India was always land of folk gods and animistic belifes before they all got aryanised and north indian sanskrit version of Hinduism was imposed on population and those gods they could not appropriate became the so goblins,orks,fairy in our case locally chaatan,maadan,marutha,Yakshi so on and so forth.
Guruvayoor was once a chaatan kavu hmm I am sceptical since the god is Krishna(a north Indian dude from mathura so it may be built after aryanisation but not sure) it is highly probable Sabarimala being a chaatan temple the god is not mention in aryan vedas or scriputures,but they coudnt destroy his sect of followers, it was a tribal temple that was gradually taken over by Travancore royals for political reasons and tried and suceeded in semi aryanising it as well. before the brahmanisation of the religion..but at end of day hinduism was is a system of belifs that incoporat all animistic and folk religion into itself until very recently.

I can see where Rick got vampire vibes from! It reminded me a lot of the 1992 Dracula movie, with the creepy castle and the sinister host. This film is really good at making you feel the vulnerability of being in someone else's territory 😬
