I learned this mistake as well. I bought the Por-15 rust preventer in clear & shook the can for a while. When I opened it there was tons of bubbles seen throughout the whole can. When I painted it on there was bumps all over. Had to redo the whole project.
I had to wait a couple weeks for all the air to come out the can and this is the reason you can't shake it!

Thanks for the test! I used POR-15 on a rustee battery tray in my car and unfortunately the rust came back within 3 years. Thought I did something wrong and was going to try it again... This time restoring my e36 M3. But, since watching your tests, I will be using Eastwood after some cutting and welding. Love the T-shirt btw!

Other than house paints, most of them specify to stir, not shake. With 2 part paints, the air bubbles are actually adding a 3rd part(02), or diluting what the mix ratio is, giving inaccurate quantity measurements. Plus all the bubbles are just a pita.
Other than the bubbles making for a bumpy texture, POR is activated by air so if there are air bubbles in the unused portion maybe it will ruin it while in storage? It’s odd that both sides of your test where bumpy tho. Usually the POR will self level and be smoove, even brush marks are usuallly disappeared.

many products don't want a shake as doing so introduces air bubbles. if you do it with polyurethane plan on sanding back to bare wood and start over.

We did a frame rail after putting on a paint shaker. It did have tons of bubbles. I don't think it will matter on a small area, but a large area will come out better if not shaken.

I have been undercoating my 30 year old truck with por-15 since I bought it. I never read directions and shake it every time. My bad. But the stuff work pretty well and it's easy to touch up my sliders and skid plates when rocks cut through to the metal. Rust-proof is a misnomer, but I think it's helped preserve the nuts, bolts and threads under there so they are intact when I need to work on the truck. Will stir going forward...

Ya, in shipping in the truck(s), on the forklift, on the wheeler or pallet jack, and the person stocking the shelf, then shoppers picking it up and handling it, then the person that buys it ( maybe riding around in a cart or hand basket). Then the car ride home. Ya. I really can't think of a way that it has not being shaken at some point.

Good video. Technically though, doesn't a shake after a stir create a third alternative? I assume it wasn't a long time after stirring before you shook the can so hardly any difference. I wonder if shaking is an issue when a can has been sitting for a very long time. It's not like a rattle can so settled contents may not mix properly if you just shake the can. I think your shake after a recent stir negated any issues.

  • @glytch5
    @glytch5 3 роки тому +1

the do not shake is just to keep the air bubbles to a minimum. Has nothing to do with how the paint actually works. The inherent problem with POR15 is it has way too many steps and directions. Its very hard to do correctly, but works great when you do.

As I mentioned on the previous vid, shaking is likely just about air bubbles during application. Should make almost zero difference especially with multiple coats. This process is so complex it only makes sense for very small projects. Especially given the expense. People just really want to defend POR. It's not automatically the best product just because it's the most well known. The little bubbles in the finish are strange as well. Good testing. Hopefully this quiets a lot of people. Sunk cost bias will keep them defending though.

I’ve used it with both good and bad results. Prep is definitely key. I agree there are fanbois that will defend whatever their specific hill to die on may be. The other side of that coin is that there are a lot of dumb people who either make no attempt to follow the directions, or they think that ‘Paint Over Rust’ means that no prep work is required. Maybe POR17 marketing team needs to change how they advertise due to the amount of idiots that use the product without even cleaning the surface, let alone actually using the other POR products to properly prep, then wondering why it flakes off.

BUT, i lost option to stir it.

I shook the heck out of the stuff but then I also sprayed it through an HVLP gun with a screen cap. Yep you can spray POR-15. I bought some POR-15 solvent (it's just naphtha y'all) and sprayed a cleaned up (per the POR-15 clean/degrease/etch gospel!) skid plate. Two coats took two 4 oz cans but that coating is thick and shiny and is hard as porcelain. Will it last? Who the hell knows. But it'll certainly last longer than the flaky rust that was there before would have.

Of course it get shaken a lot before you buy it, but it should not be shaken just before use. POR suggests that you stir it, but don't open the can(??) I would shake it several days before using it and then before punching two holes in it to pour some out I would gently flip it over a few times.

Just seen this excellent video. Here is my take for what it's worth. After reading and researching on the net I decided POR15 was the way to go. I refurbished some suspension items on one side of my car. I had them sandblasted, I degreased them to death, used the POR15 metal prep, used the paint, 2 coats, exactly as per the instructions, they looked great. 2 years later I decided to restore the car, so the entire subframe and suspension had to come off. The POR15 parts looked just like they had come off the Titanic!, the untouched original 22 year old parts looked great by comparison. POR15 is over-priced garbage. Everywhere I have used it it has failed. There are far better products out there.

Bubbles in the finish aren't just cosmetic, they are an area where the rust prevention is decreased. I have been seeing more and more videos where the person doesn't bother to read instructions, but then goes to teach us by video. Sorry I know that sounds harsh.

I first used POR 15 about 30 years ago and many, many times since.
If used as per the instruction, it is a brilliant t product.
Shaking the can causes air bubbles, which can cause bubbles in the final product.
"If all else fails, follow the instructions".
If you don't like following instructions, don't use this product.
If you do follow instructions, there is no better product.

I had a white bottle and shook it hard and it frothed it which made it a real pain in the ass to apply on the metal. There were tiny bubbles everywhere. DO NOT SHAKE IT. In the black you did here didn’t seem to matter too much although wasn’t a very nice looking piece of metal so hard to tell. In my case it ruined the project. Foam roller doesn’t help either. I went back and dragged the bristles 45 degree over to help pop some bubbles
Nice test. And actually waiting a full year to school the trolls haha.

In my opinion Por15 is garbage I’ve done their bs prep I have followed their directions to a t pamphlet in hand as I’m painting the only stuff or rust paint that really works is RUST BULLET I work in rock quarries and my truck frames were rusting away so I picked up a computer and got on interwebs I researched and researched and I stumbled across RUST BULLET a industrial rust encapsulating paint it has three steps prep base coat and top coat the only thing I do different is where two pieces are riveted together I use rust converter like where the cross member meets the frame I take a foam paint stick and slobber that converter in the seams the other thing I’m doing is once a year I pressure wash my trucks underside and then use fluid film frame black to get inside all the nooks and crannies the door bottoms can corners cause The price of 1 ton trucks is crazy and I’m not shelling out 85000 for a truck every two years that’s just crazy and by doing my rust irradiation program I’m working on 4 years and still have no rusted rotten freakin holes in my frames let me say this again POR15 sucks might as well use my kids finger paints in school RUST BULLET is where it’s at it’s an industrial high solid coating and it works
