Replacing the Ball-Cock
Diagnostic
A toilet's water level is controlled by the Ball-Cock supply valve and float ball. This assembly will need to be repaired or replaced if the Ball-Cock supply valve is corroded, the float rod is bent or broken, and or if the float ball is no longer buoyant. Since the Ball-Cock supply valve is an older design and takes up more room in the tank, it should when replaced, be with a new toilet fill valve system. However, if a fill valve is not available, a new Ball-Cock supply valve assembly can be installed.
Parts
Purchase a Ball-Cock supply valve at a hardware, or plumbing supply store. This kit should include the valve assembly with float ball, connecting rod, and plastic fill tube. Additionally, a small bin to collect excess water will be needed when the old Ball-Cock supply valve is removed.
Tools
The tools needed to perform this repair are a pair of rib-joint pliers, an adjustable open-ended wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver.
Replacement
Begin the replacement of the Ball-cock supply valve and Float Ball by turning off the water supply valve. Then remove the tank's lid and flushing the toilet. With the tank empty, position a plastic bin to collect water under the Ball-Cock supply valve's shank. Unscrew the hose from the base of the tank, having any water drain into the plastic bin below. Now with the open-ended adjustable wrench or rib-joint pliers unscrew the lock nut located on the bottom of the Ball-Cock supply valve's shank. With the nut removed the entire assembly can be pulled out of the tank. The old assembly should be placed into the bin as it may continue to drain water.
With the old assembly removed, take the new Ball-Cock Supply valve and slide the tank gasket fully onto the shank. Then adjust the height to best suit the height of the tank usually about 1/2 inch below the edge of the tank and aligned with the overflow tube. Insert the threaded end into the hole where the previously assembly was removed. Position the new assembly and thread the lock nut by hand securing the tube upright. Once hand-tight secure the lock nut a 1/4 turn further with a wrench to insure a watertight seal. Now re-attach the water supply hose to the Ball-Cock Supply Valve's shank below the tank. Then connect the fill hose to the top of the Ball-Cock Supply valve and attach it to the overflow tube. Once in place turn on the water-supply valve and the tank will begin to fill. Make any adjustments to the water level by twisting the screw at the top of the ball-cock assembly. The tank's water level is best at about 1 inch below the top of overflow tube located in the center of the toilet. Inspect the new connections to make sure they are not leaking water and test the toilet's function. Once in order replace the tank's lid to complete the project.
I didn't know what a ballcock was but I knew I had to go find this thing in the toilet tank and replace it. So I found one at the hardware store, read the instructions on back, learned it was called a ballcock, searched for a UA-cam video, found yours, and fixed it all by myself. Couldn't have done it without your great "how to" video and saved myself lots of money with no plumber. Many thanks.

Ballcock ballcock
WOW...I fixed it. Thank you for your help. Only cost me $9.75 for parts. Fixed it in just a few minutes. Probably saved about $150. You do good work.
YES! Way to make a 22 year old's life more easier, thank you!!!
Just replaced my ballcock assembly and everything is working fine! I can't believe it myself, as I have no clue about this stuff! Thanks for this great little guide.
This was like the simplest teach me how video I've ever seen, thank you
Thank you!!!!! I immediately went to Lowe's, picked up the ballcock assembly and did it myself!
Thanks to this easy-to-follow video I was able to replace my broken supply valve assembly with no trouble at all, even though I suck at this kind of thing. Maybe twenty minutes start to finish. Much appreciated!
If it wasn’t for this video Im not sure if I’d still be alive, I was an inch from offing myself after multiple trips to the hardware store. Thank you, you saved a life today..
Thanks so much for this video! I just saved myself who-knows-how-many dollars and time that a plumber would've needed and did it myself. Works great, and I had no idea it would be so easy, fast, or affordable. Hooray for DIY videos like these!
thank you for taking the time to show us the easy way of fixing our toilets. GOD bless you, JESUS loves you
Your WELCOME old us MARINE.
Thank you so much!!!!! You saved me over $100. I was a little nervous but it all went together just like you said and only cost $11 for the part. Thank you again :)
Followed these instructions exactly and the result was perfect. Thank you! Aug 25, 2015
Thank you for taking time to create this video. Very well done, easy to understand and follow.
Mine kept leaking until I applied some plumbers tape to the upper half. Dry as a bone now. Only took 2 hours of struggling with 2 new Ballcock kits before my brother suggested it and off to the store we went :) If you've never used it, its not even sticky, its like a flimsy light strip you wrap around and press into the grooves in the area where you'll want sealed. It actually made it easier to tighten as well. You've got nothing to loose. Good luck and happy flushing!
Thanks for the detailed instructions. Can you ţell me how to replace the flapper and chain as well?
Thanks for the vid sir ! My mum told me to fix the toilet and yeah I needed this vid...
Excellent, much easier to follow than the piece of paper I was provided!
I know Absolutely nothing about this stuff so Thank you. My husband passed away so it's up to me now to fix stuff. I have a question. This tank assembly with the ball float (I think that's what it's called lol) I have same one as in the video. Can I get one of those universal kits that do not have this ball float? Or does it need to be the exact one I already have?
Can now add plumbing to my LinkedIn skills. Cheers ✊🏻
Thank you so much for the easy to understand instructions. I did it! I fixed the assembly myself.
Thanks for the easy instructions. My husband and I were able to do this and now our toilet no longer runs. The part costs $8 from Lowe's and took us about 15-25 min. We accidentally broke the ball, so we just took the old one and put it on.
Thank you for the video! You've saved me from breaking everything!
I got this right away! Im not the fix it urself gal...but this was great! I did it i did it thank u million
Thank you so much. You saved my life tonight.
Anyone find it strange that the bathroom is carpeted?
+carlos rivera-colon -- Blame the 70s. The kitchen probably is, too.
yup
My grandma's old house in her bathroom was carpet, that is just nasty.
My great grandma's kitchen is carpeted.
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations I've never seen a carpeted kitchen! Do you have pics?
I did it!!!! Thank you so much for this awesome video!!!!! 🔧🚽😊
My stuff hasn't been replaced since the 80s apparently. I wish the nut on the water supply line was that easy to get off. We got it done though! No leaks, and we tinkered so that the bowl would fill correctly. Finally no drip drip drip drip from the top of the ballcock thing!
Jeeeeeeezus! Watched this a dozen times while doing it. Still managed to have to unscrew and rescrew multiple times. The big ball thingies didn't fit so I had to shorten the rod. Once in, it works beautifully. I'm NEVER using that new style again. Not after $165 water bill for near constant running. 😩
Thank you....I can't believe I just fix my toilet, so proud of myself!!!
The world truly rests on the shoulders of people making UA-cam videos on how to do stuff... well done Sir!
I watched this so i know what to do so i can fix my toilet myself. My landlord taking too long.
Thank you. Exactly what I needed!
thanks for sharing this! awesome yet very well informative.
haha, you said ballcock.
Do they still make fill valves with float balls? You'd have to be crazy to buy one.
Excellent! Thank you - explanation and video very well done.
Helped so much! Thanks
This was very helpful. Thank you.
Again, great videos!
Thank you for saving me anywhere from $50 - $100 for a plumber. I only spent $13.
Very helpful!
I messed up somewhere and I now have testicular torsion
What is the little blue screw on the top of the float system called? I think mine is stripped. Do they sell them separate or should I buy the whole float assembly? Thanks for a reply.
Did you have any luck finding a replacement screw? I have the same problem. Thanks!
@@debrahaskell805 no i did not
TY UA-cam and Homie.
Oops! When did you attach the float ball to the new valve assembly?
I once bought a ballcock valve unit that had the float that was adjustable and fit over the ballcock with a needle valve that stuck up in the center of the top and it worked so good and now I can't find them being sold anywhere! All you can get are these junk ones that suck so bad and are always in need of repairs. JUNK!
helped out a lot . thanks .
Alright, at least that's simple enough. Hooray for late night plumbing issues!
Does toilets still comes with this contraption? Isn’t that ballcock a little outdated? I’m surprise stores still sell that item.
OMG I feel like a plumber, thank you !
Thank you! Now I'm omw to Ace Hardware's!
Any tips on getting the plastic nut off? I am using a wrench and going clockwise - but it is not budging! (have tried soaking with wd-40 already).
squashblsm "Righty-tighty, lefty loosie."
Mine was a b*tch, too. Just replace the hose and flapper, too. At my house, it leaked like a fountain when I turned it on with the old hose...doh! Oh, turn on GRADUALLY, for obvious reasons...! :)
haha cok and ball
I just bought the replacement cap for this and it came with two rubber washers, one solid blue and one transparent blue. Do I need both of them or just one of them and if just one, which one?
My first attempt worked pretty well . BUT I cannot get the lock nut to work correctly causing thingy to pop up , so discouraged
Thank u show us as easy way but I have Un version tank volve or other matirial it's Lil complicated and the things I bring from shop but it different ..in dnt knw how to place inside tank..?
Can sombudy help ?
Thank you Very Very Much And God bless You..
I followed these instructions ...have changed these things out maybe half a dozen times in my life, and never had a problem. But with this one, a DANCO toilet repair kit, which looks like the one in the video, the water squirts out all over the place at the connection between the water line and the toilet repair unit. No idea what's causing this? Anyone have a suggestion?
seems we having the same problem!! I brought two so far
Dennis Pratt Had that. Replace water line.
Thank you, perfect video!
Should you put plumbers tape on the ball-cock supply valve shank? After installation, I had a slow leak between the lock nut and tank bottom. It was torqued to specifications. Your thoughts?
No it is not needed the gasket is for the seal not the threads.
Adrenalin Junkie At my house, the hose was faulty. They have rubber in both ends to make the seal. After I replaced it, it was perfect, but I DID get a fountain the first time using the old hose! lol.
I didn't even SEE the ball mechanism at two hardware stores ...good news is the new ones are universal.
Michelle......ball-cock supply valve shank was faulty. Hose got replaced from the first sign of trouble, but water kept coming. Thanks for the reply.
thanks ya'll are awesome!
Thanks
Wow that looks super easy!! I'm going to go get a new ball cock kit for my running annoying toilet because it is very corroded and it does look like it needs to be replaced
is it normal that there is a long hissing noise after flushing? or do i need to do something about it? its wayer noise is very distracting.
Why did you say we need "open-ended wrench, and a flat-head screwdriver" but then you never used them?
the screwdriver is for protection.
What protection
Whoever invented that word, never knew what youtube was xD
Ha ballcock, I call it a toilet fill valve, the ball is a float and the flapper, what do you call a flush handle? LMAO
carlos rivera-colon hA bAlLcOcK. Are you fucking serious?
Ballcock is the real word for it. It was created before people interpreted everything as a penis joke.
I get a slow leak, from the top of the fill valve. Any reason why?
I think the gasket under those 4 screws is shot. Sometimes all you need to do is tighten those screws or replace that gasket in there.
Why does my fill tube shoot up water from the top adjustment screw when I flush? Like a volcano. It's about 8 years old.
The seal has gone bad inside. Is your toilet Sterling?
Very interesting, thanks
Excellent , I had a quote from Mr Rooter he wants $1200 for a new toilet with labour and their toilet !!!!!!
Great video, but is that wall carpeted? 😂
Thank you!!! Thank You!!
Ya this is all pretty straight forward but my toilet is up against a wall which makes this significantly more difficult
how many valves are there?
Missing important detail . Description on how to adjust height of float ball and adjusting screws on top missing.
Mary Threads I could've swore he mentioned it...I personally found out when cranking the top adjustment screw enough means eventually you don't have enough water to flush the toilet because it still drips...you need to do this. :)
oooh, I bet I could make a fortune doing this for well-off incompetent people once I've done it once. :) Like snaking a drain. Plumber said 150.00. I said, "Bull. It takes you under 10 minutes. It's just gross. 50.00. Take it or leave it."
He took it, of course.
What a bait and switch rip-off! I came here for the cock and balls, and ended up watching a video on how to repair a toilet??? Actually, this was helpful though. Thanks!
wow cool tutorial
Reliable
Thankyou😉
wow thanks for sharing
I just need to replace that blue plastic screw as it slips anyone know where to find it?
Hahahah take a shot everytime he says ballcock
What happens when u get a blue ball massage
then baby batter gets sprayed all over the place
Replacement isn't true repair (the purist in me). I see the top of this older style of ballcock valve has screws. Looking mine over, I muse whether a cleaning could bring the unit back to correct operation.
how to replace the tolit tank
What's up with that carpeted bathroom?
thank you :)
the water keeps going over the floating ball... i try adjusting it with the screw but it wont work... dont know what to do now
marcXsober replace mechanism, and flapper and water hose, long as you're in there...the ball is no longer buyant, sounds like. Not even 20.00 of parts will fix it.
Good informative video, but..who puts carpet in their bathroom? lol
Why would a bathroom have carpet in it
Tq!
Thank you" 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Carpet around the toilet. 💥 noice
Fowler Gent cc 45 RH cystern
I have modern kohler toilets but American standered is still my best (I love ball floats or cocks)
From reading the title.....i thought he was going to repair the valve. He just replace it.
At 1:45...man I'm yanking on it and it's not coming off...
Somebody's username on Grindr?
done but still leaking some !!
I had the same problem... tightening with a wrench goes a long way... >.>
