    the Mood looks great, I've never liked the horizontal layout starting with Shuttle a million years ago, but I love vertical SFF cases. I already bought an ncore 100 that I modified to fit a dual 180mm radiator, but I might pick up the Mood for a living room NAS.

    Kinda feels like Fractal's taken one step forward and two steps back with these new cases. With the Mood not allowing all sides to be vented only shows Fractal's apparent high confidence in the 180mm top fan being entirely sufficient for cooling purposes, which I really hope is warranted, because it comes at the expense of two of the four sides being completely solid, so hot air is gonna hit those sides thus raising internal temps BEFORE all that heat is eventually vented out at the top.
    The Era 2 does seem to be a marked improvement over the last Era, but Fractal again just had to default the bottom fans to intake on a now sandwich layout, which would've made sense if it were a traditional layout like the Era 1, but exhaust would be much preferred in a sandwich style case. Still, at least here it's just a simple matter of flipping the bottom fans, that is assuming their angled design for the bottom panel/dust filter works in exhaust mode just as well as intake.

    • @MY-qi8wq
      @MY-qi8wq Місяць тому

      If the other two sides are ventilated, air will get pulled in from those sides as well, which will do nothing but fight against the exhaust airflow from the GPU. Having only the intake sides open make a lot of sense.

    • @Daedy
      @Daedy Місяць тому +1

      @@MY-qi8wq What makes you think "air will get pulled in from those sides as well, which will do nothing but fight against the exhaust airflow from the GPU"?? This is a sandwich case. Think Fractal Terra, Dan A4 H2O, Meshroom S etc etc, all of those cases have all four vented sides (left+right+top+bottom), air is drawn in thru the left+right side panels (CPU and GPU respectively) then hot air exits thru top+bottom vents.
      It would've been the same with the Mood if you laid it down flat instead of upright, except here those two panels on the Mood are completely blocked, so hot air actually has nowhere to go, which wouldn't make sense, would it? Hence the whole reason for that 180mm fan. So the question you should ask yourself - how willing would you be to have an A4 H2O with closed-off top and bottom panels, where only the side panels are vented, all that in exchange for a front exhaust fan?

    • @MY-qi8wq
      @MY-qi8wq Місяць тому

      @@Daedy That's basic physics. Overall pressure in the case is lower than ambient, air tries to get in from every single hole. Even vents that are supposed to "exhaust air" will become intake vents if the exhaust fan(s) are strong enough.
      An opposite of this phenomenon can be seen in the Fractal Ridge, where CPU temps when using a downdraft cooler gets worse when the case fan increases in speed.
      Sealing panels to guide airflow to improve temps is not a new concept. This channel has also explored things like this, for example in the "fanless" radiator video and Meshlicious air cooling video.
      In an case exhaust setup, ideally you want vents only at where you want air to come in, for example near GPU and CPU cooler fans. That way, no airflow is wasted by going through vents that that don't contribute to cooling.
      A4 H2O is a bit different - the case fans double as CPU cooler (radiator) fans, thus there is a trade off between better GPU temps and better CPU temps. Sealing the top and bottom vents near the GPU intake, for example, will improve GPU temps, at the cost of CPU temps. Sealing the bottom will lead to a similar result.
      For the Mood? The exhaust fan only serves as an exhaust, so you don't need to worry about this. The most balanced setup would be top exhaust, CPU and GPU intake. In fact, for this layout it would be ideal to add like 2-4 additional side fans all set as exhaust, perpendicular to GPU and rad intake, but without that, closed panels are the best option.

    • @MY-qi8wq
      @MY-qi8wq Місяць тому

      @@JoeBlow-kh3gq Indeed, if the rad is exhaust, the two panels are better left vented. But in my opinion, the most balanced setup is GPU and CPU intake, top exhaust, and that should work fine (and better with the sides closed off than not).
      You'll be surprised to know that "hot" air from rads is only, like, 40 C or so, certainly not enough to overheat the PSU, especially with constant, active and directed airflow.
      Yeah the PSU blocks some airflow no matter which way the fan is facing, but by how much is something that needs further investigation.

    • @Daedy
      @Daedy Місяць тому

      @@MY-qi8wq Internal air pressure is lower than ambient because air is being drawn in from active components inside the case, namely the CPU cooler fan, the PSU fan and the GPU fan(s). As cool air is drawn in and guided through the heatsinks and various heat exchangers the resulting hot air will then travel through the routes of least resistance, that is along the fin stacks on, say, the GPU heatsink, which if the fins are oriented vertically the air will exit said fins in those directions. So you'd want those directions where hot air travels to have least amount of resistance, hence perforated top and bottom panels where said hot air is able to exit. That's basic airflow dynamics.
      If you block those paths the hot air will either travel elsewhere within the case until it's able to exit, or no exits are found and hot air is trapped inside the case. In either instances you end up with a positive air pressure system where internal case temps rise as the components soak up the heat carried by the circulating hot air, made worse by the fact those very same components are also producing their own heat at the same time. Yes, what you're suggesting is not a new concept, it's a misconception. There's nothing to "guide" here by blocking two panels out of four, this is just cutting off one's nose to spite own face.
      Your idea of a single point of exhaust serving all points of intake only makes sense when air pressure is at equilibrium, that is the same amount of air being vented as being drawn in, which would be difficult to balance to say the least as you're assuming that lone 180mm fan is able to achieve equilibrium with every single cooling configuration of the various components inside the case, except it won't for obvious reasons.
      Even then it's still not an ideal proposition as you'd actually want a negative pressure setup where the exhaust fan is able to draw more air out than the respective coolers are able to draw in on their own, so more cool air gets to circulate internally in order to carry the heat out quickly and effectively.
      That's why I said in the very beginning that I hope that 180mm fan is able to achieve all that, otherwise like I've already explained you'd just end up with a hot box where the trapped heat is just waiting its turn to be exhausted through the only point of exit at the top. Even then, like I also said, that's still no excuse to not have ventilation on all sides for the simple fact, as already explained, that hot air is able to exit wherever it can even when the 180mm is not up to snuff, and your system is not beholden to one fan doing all the exhaust work for you.

      And you can thank nvidia for that, they don't give a f about gamer consumers, because they know people will buy their products anyway. Plus, the gaming market is such a low percentage of where their revenue is coming from now, they can care less about what that segment of the market is complaining about.
