  • The sound is a little messed up on this one. There was a nasty scratch on the second half of side A &.... for whatever reason, the audio went out of sync a touch on the second half. No idea what happened there. If it's really bad, I'll pull it & try again.
    Enjoy & regards!!

1973 I was 19 yo and worked on a local dairy farm in Still River, MA. The owner had a 656 and 856 ( I think thats correct). I loved driving these. Super reliable and capable. Last I heard the farm closed and owners all passed away but the 656 was still running as of 1998.

The 656 was and is one workhorse of a tractor...RED POWER THEN...RED POWER NOW!

Never had the privilege to operate one. Just a 756 & my 806. Great RED machines, regardless!

We had 2 of these when I was younger. This was the first tractor I learned to drive.

We got 3 of them. One farmall 656 diesel with quick hitch. We use it everyday with our 3030 mixer. Got 656 international diesel 3 point hitch that we use for a smaller mixer and use with our merger and got a 656 international hydro 3 point hitch that has a great bend loader. It blew a head gasket

No mention of the "Hydro" models, was that introduced later? (luv the 1 I have)

The Farmall 656 gear drive was introduced in 1965, the Hydro version was introduced in 1967.

Thanks for the history class. I wonder how many had 1000 rpm shafts?

Uh oh! I've realized the inevitable has happened. I can't keep up with all the comments. Not sure how many had the 1000 PTO shafts. Don't think IH kept the same amount of tractor build data that Deere did. That's one of very few things I can credit the green team for.

Very very few, all the 656’s you’ll see have a 540 pto that’s how mine is. On auction time, tractor house, and all those websites including forums not one 656 with a 1000 rpm pto has been seen most likely because a lot of the implements during the era didn’t use it or the 656 was too small for ones which did need it.

@@ikonseesmrno7300 I think IH did keep similar data but much of it was sadly discarded during the 1984-85 merger.

Probably not as rare as 1000 rpm pto, but I've never seen one with the shuttle shift option mentioned in this film strip either.

Yet another great film! Just had to mention, your videos are really making the rounds on the Facebook! I’ve seen quite a few posts with your videos! Keep up the good work!

I can't thank you enough for the Facebook post. Very happy the word has gotten out so people can enjoy the videos. There are two left to do for IH. I'm taking a short pause after that to help with my mother who's finally coming home this week from the rehab center. The postings after that may be sporadic for a while as she will be in hospice home care. The next series of videos will be a couple from JI Case & then a bunch from John Deere. Stay tuned for more history.

Baled hay with my Uncle's 656 gasser on hilly contour strips. It was okay, but kind of awkward compared to our 3020. Hated that it freewheeled when the TA was angaged. Fenders were too tall, hindering windrow visibility. Good power, but governor would let engine rpm overshoot when you cracked the throttle. Not a bad tractor, just not my cup of tea.
