Thank you, this was all kinds of enjoyable. I join you in celebrating that Canon has put such great sensors in the R8, R6II, and the R6. The EOS 6D had a tremendous sensor, and I know of a German portrait guy who put 900K and 1.3M shots on a pair of 6D bodies with no mechanical issues (and no cleanings!). The 6D was a wonderful utility photographer's friend, and I'm sticking with its grandchild, the R6, because the sensor is terrific for all kinds of stage, theater, speaker, interview, school classroom, candid, and event photos. I shot a science fair photo at ISO 20,000 with the R6, and after color correction in LR, noise reduction with Adobe's new AI (!!!!!), and a pass through Radiant Photo, I was utterly blown away - I would have sworn it was taken at base ISO, this is near-miraculous stuff. I'm 81, 57 yrs of clicks.
I'm a beginner to photography, and this camera is everything I could have ever wanted at this price point. Learning how to use and just the basic of photography has been enjoyable, and having a camera that will support my needs for years to come is a blessing.
I’ve had it for 4 weeks now… really enjoying it for travel especially. The ergonomics are great; coupled with the 24 it’s also a really flexible package. I sold my a7c last week..
I have owned the RP before, sold it and just bought another one, arriving this week. Had not considered the R8 because I don't do video and otherwise, it seemed about the sane as an RP. But I hadn't considered the difference in sensor. You just have me a lot to think about!
Yes, i too was taken by surprise by this combination of sensor, size and price. I’ve actually sold off my R6 in order to get this. Just like you note, i pair it with the 35mm f1.8 which has IS, and i have my cheaper Leica Q3 (at least in my dreams). And i pack along the 16mm f2.8 and the 85mm for lots of versatility. Or just take the 24-105 f4 and its “one (lens) and done.” 😊
This camera is definitely I am looking at (as well as the R6 MKII) when I make the jump to the R System, I am currently using the 6D MKII and would like to have a camera that is travel/hike friendly
I just got it a few days ago, i love it so far. In my opinion its the best value for money (new) hybrid camera money can buy right now. People scoff at the lack of IBIS like its a necessity when anyone doing serious video work probably already has a gimbal... And the small battery can easily be counteracted with USB-C power delivery on your rig when shooting long videos since even a cheap 10000mah power bank can give you 10x the juice. Take all that away and what you're left with is excuses... or perhaps elitism. And maybe if you're still salty about the budget king you can go and buy the R6 mark ii so everyone will know you had 1000 extra dollars to spend xD
I noticed how everyone is drawing attention to the lack of IBIS like no one is taking pictures and just pretend to be tiktok influencer these days SO WE ALL NEED IBIS to create the best content 🙄. I am thinking of upgrading from M50 which is an excellent camera paired with L lenses for the beginners/advanced photographers. Of course professional photographers will choose cameras from different price range but for travellers looking for the upgrade I think canon actually did a good step forward. Thanks for the video 🤝🏽
Thanks for this interesting video! Looks like this camera is kind of a no-brainer if one is a casual street- or travel-shooter. One question I have is: When you traveled to Korea, which lenses did you take with you and can you tell us a little bit about the experience of shooting these lenses on the R8. As you‘ve mentioned in this video, there are some small and affordable lenses in the Canon mirrorless lineup. As a travel- and streetphotographer those smaller lenses are quite tempting for me.
Yes, thank you for watching. I only took 50mm 1.8 and 16mm 2.8 for the R8 and I liked them a lot. Other than some minor lens flare while shooting into the sun, I didn't notice any issues and was quite happy with the images especially for the price. I didn't have it with me, but I also used to own the 35mm 1.8 and I really liked that lens as well. They're not the most durable/rugged feeling lenses but I like their size and weight, and considering 3 of these lenses cost about $800 or less with some sales that are happening now, I don't think that's such a bad thing.
😢why everyone who is with Canon m50 mark II is confused with their next device? I have the same camera and I'm nightlife photographer. I'm very confused since August about my next purchase because my field is very technically challenging. Love the Canon environment so gonna upgrade to Canon environment but stuck between R8, R6 mark II and R5 ( second hand 😂😂)
@@huseynbalagurbanli9433 Personally I’m not sure if I want the very advanced and professional R7, the cheaper and still very good R10 (with more $ on lenses, or go entry level full frame with the R8. I shoot mostly landscape tho, and often find my lenses to be too zoomed in, so the R8 is probably the way to go?? Not professional or anything so no need for dual card slots, and the R8 sensor seems superior to the R7 one.
I’m a causal shooter and I have a canon r6 and lately it has been giving me issues late overheating and shutting down and I really don’t want to spend the money again. Looking at the r8 to replace my r6 because I can’t see the reason to spend the extra $800 for the r6 mark 2 as a causal shooter.
Great comments as usual. I am a relatively new in terms of camera skills. Self taught through trial & error & videos. Love the way you explain the camera differences. I am still using a crop camera, can’t justify the money yet for full frame. Need to tighten up my skills. 😊

Your content is immensely valuable to us shooters. One of the things keeping me on the fence on purchasing this camera is whether the lack of a fully mechanical shutter will prevent me from shooting with a strobe outdoors, using a very wide aperture lens and a shutter speed past 1/1000. I prefer going the professional route of ND filters to reduce incoming light but always loved that option as a backup if I don't have my filters on my person at that moment. Will this lack of a fully mechanical shutter prevent me from doing this?
Thanks, I haven't tested it in depth with flash and I haven't experienced any issues with the shutter but if that's your priority, I probably wouldn't recommend this. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably look into either R6 mark i or ii.
Thanks for another lovely video! Could you please make a video comparing the Low Light High ISO capabilities of the R10, R7 & R8? So we get to know how much of a difference going full frame makes to the photos & videos.
Great video! I currently shoot pro with a R6 (v1) and an R5 and would like use both of them for work only. I'm looking for a fun walk around camera at this time, full frame. Seems like this R8 would be my best choice? How is the high ISO performance? Thanks
I though Panasonic S1 was the perfect camera for me. I went to DP review and looked at the sample photos of the R8 and they were gorgeous. The I looked at the S1 pictures and they were terrible. Is R8 better than X-T4? I have used the X-T100 a lot for landscapes and I hate the jpeg engine cos it is oversharp so I set sharpness in camera to minus 1 and sometimes 2 and yet that camera feels off a bit. I like the eosM100 a lot and also Sony a5100 because pictures are great also when I pixel peep. And I always do that because I have to know how the image quality is all the way to the pixels level cos I have cameras that I just cant stand like the lumix LX100 because its too mushy and noisy for me to enjoy it. The canon 20D on the other hand is soooo clean. So where do I go to find a camera that is producing the best jpegs? The R8. Not?
Hello, thank you for your fantastic video, I also just watched the R8 vs R7 comparison too. My question is related to upgrading from a Canon 70D, I have a bunch of lenses that fit it such as: ef 50mm f1.8, ef L series 70-200mm f.4, ef-s 10-18mm & ef-s 17-55mm f.2.8, I'm looking at going for the R8 for the full frame, lighter body and better quality photo in the mirrorless. But I'm wondering if adding the lens mount onto the R8 and my existing lenses will defeat the purpose of the lighter body? And I should possibly just look at a whole new body & lens set up. We go to Europe and Canada in a few weeks, and worried the old girl (70D) is going to let me down. Thanks for any advice 😊
Hello and thank you for watching the videos. In terms of size, I'm thinking smaller lenses like the 50 1.8 won't really affect the overall size and weight even with the adapter, and same with the 70-200, the lens is already big, a little bit of added length won't be too noticeable. But eventually, you'd want to replace the ef-s lenses to full frame lenses because your images will be cropped on a full frame camera.
Hi! I have both since my Rp had some troubles with the dial mode (just some dust giving me a hard time when tried to select modes). I use the cam for my work so I bought the R8 and I must say it worth every penny, specially when using higher ISO or using it for sports. A big difference, go for it!
I’ve just ordered one of these. Every negative or middling review seems to obsess over it being not quite as good as the R6 mkII. Which costs £1000 more.
As a hybrid shooter for fun and family events, I really like this camera, but I have no interest in purchasing heavy lenses. The only lens which would possibly work for me is RF 35mm f1.8, but many user reviews clamming this lens is too slow and noisy for video. Apparently the new 24mm is better, but I am not sure if the focusing mechanism is the same or different, and also might be too wide for me. Can someone who perhaps is more familiar with this subject can give me an advise I would appreciate it.
The M50 users, who want to upgrade------ need a body like R10 (perfect price 879USD), a good overall zoom like 18-55mm F2.8-4, a prime like 22m F2 as well as log profile (just like A6400 in this price point). As a M50 user, I was really curious about R8 but if it had a joystick like the R10 it can be perfect. R10 also could be perfect if it had a Log profile and some image stabilized prime and a good kit lens (with faster F stop like 2.8). I also have a complaint about the kit lens of R8 (24-50mm), why Canon made that although 24-105mm (f4-7.1) was present. Actually, the M50 users are really confused now------ I was looking for XS-20 but it also seems expensive for me and now see what Sony move forward with a replacement of the A6400.
R10 + Ef-rf adapter + Efs 18-55 is looking like a decent value combo for video. If I only wanted a photo camera the RP and 24-105 f4-7 would be what I’d go for. Hopefully Nikon can release something like a z50 ii soon (haven’t heard any rumours)
@@stormsandfishing5448 no one interested in adapter. All the people want native lens. Canon company also not reading people's choice, I know 12-14 canon users and most of them are not interested in adapter and 18-55 efs is not faster. As per canon's low light performance and 1.6 crop (1.5 in Sony), it need kit lens start from 2.8 - for APS-c.
@@ghalibsworld it seems the least bad option at this point. I’d rather cheap f4 than expensive f2.8 but you may value shallow depth of field more. I like the Fuji 16-80 f4 but as you say XS20 is getting too expensive for an apsc body, especially one that lacks a stacked sensor, two card slots and weather sealing.
@@stormsandfishing5448 for travel and other vlog is it better to have an all-rounder lens. And best kit lens is Fuji 18-55, F2.8-4 which with camera offered at 399usd. And a 22m f2 (35full frame equivalent) is best for talking type content. So with all it will fit my budget r10-879+399+200= under 1500usd. For Fuji XS20 it will 1299+399+ 250(voltrox 23f 1.4)= about 1900usd. Unfortunately Canon RF do not have that kit lens and prime and I do not have that much money. If I sell my M50, kit lens, 22m f2 and some accessories then I can collect 650usd in my country. So, still waiting........
R8 isn't really in the same price consideration as the R10, it would make more sense to compare R8 and R7. R7 also seems to have everything you wanted (Log Profile, IBIS) and it's crop like the R10
I like the R8 a lot but price is only "reasonable" among Canon bodies. Is it competitive? Technically it seems neck and neck with the 3-year-old Nikon Z5, which is cheaper (and sometimes on sale for $500 less than the R8 is now) and has in-body stabilization. Add in the fact that Canon defends its lens mount against 3rd party lenses, and you end up with a pricier camera with fewer lens choices (and fewer affordable ones of high quality).
It all depends on what you need. Z5 has IBIS, bigger battery, and dual card slots, R8 has a newer sensor and much better video specs and a lighter body. I hear 3rd party lenses are coming back for the RF mount so I think the lens selection for Canon and Nikon are pretty similar nowadays.
@@HyunRalphJeong I agree with you about the spec differences. But my point is that one is not better than the other, while the Nikon is 3 years old and up to $500 cheaper. As for rumors about Canon allowing 3rd party autofocus lenses - that would be great if it ever happens. If as rumored the updated Z5ii comes out this year at the price of the R8 Canon will have a lot to worry about. (But competition is good for us.)
The grip is too small for me, and I don’t even have big hands! My fingertip/fingernail situation smashes into the body, and it got irritating and uncomfortable after maybe 15 minutes into my shop trial. 😭 Canon always shrinks the less expensive cameras. Why?
That's exactly the point of this R8, a more compact travel-friendly camera with all the big bells and whistles. Before there was only one really affordable alternative, the Sony A7C, which is still comparable to this R8 despite being 3 years older. But yeah maybe you're not the target audience for this type of camera.
i am stuck on weather to upgrade or not, r10,, or the r7, or the ff r8. i take care of the marketing and internet presence at a small town iowa ford dealership. i take all the stills of the inventory and short vid clips. i recently started a youtube page for how to- why to videos. i also woulf like to start shooting internet based commercials. currently i have a T8i with 3 different lenses. spare batteries and hot shoe mic kit. i dont know if i really need 4 k vid yet but the option with good af would be great. shooting conditions in iowa can be hot, wet, snow and ice..etc... please give me your professional opinions...
@@TAZTALKS2022 Thanks for your comment. You'll definitely get a huge upgrade in image quality and AF performance with any of those cameras. If you shoot a lot indoors or in poor lighting, the R8 will give you the best image, but if you need a camera with best weather sealing and heat/cold resistance, I'd recommend the R7.
@HyunRalphJeong ok ty, no matter which way i go because of expense i will probably have to get an adapter for lenses? Thank you for your response. I do enjoy your videos...
For the 1000$ u save on this camera you can buy a gimbal witch is way better than Ibis, you can also buy extra batteries with a battery grip and an extra lens 😁
I was looking into the Canon R8. Just because it has 4K does not make it a better. Or even better tracking focus then the Canon RP. My Leica type 109 was able to do 4K and that was back in 2014. Canon got to really consider pricing their products compared to their competitors. The Canon R8 in my view is not worth paying $1500. It's more like a $800 in value. There is better cameras on the marketplace for $1,500.
I think Canon could include ibis in the camera of this price point. I have a real problem - a very shaky hands, so my photos very often go smeary, especially in situations of low light, etc. I really need ibis for hand held stills shooting, it is very inconvenient for me to carry a monopod or a tripod for casual shooting (good photos, not from the smart-toy-cam), especially nowadays there is a very small amount of lenses with a stabilization built-in. That's a shame
@@hugochen2359 No shutter issues so far. The sensor, in my opinion, is still pretty good. The dynamic range is a bit low but otherwise I can't fault it. I mainly shoot stills.
@@DjimmyTrovy Also about what % of the performance does the RP bring you to the R8? I don’t care about video capabilities at all and most youtubers factor that into their opinion… I only want the perspective from the photography quality standpoint, like sensor, shutter speed, AF etc… My plan might be to get a few good ef lenses that dont break the bank, try the RP second handed, and if I like full frame I’ll get the R8 if I don’t I’ll get the R7. Then I’ll sell the RP for a small lost.

Why?
What other cameras do you use?
You can buy a grip
That's exactly the point of this R8, a more compact travel-friendly camera with all the big bells and whistles. Before there was only one really affordable alternative, the Sony A7C, which is still comparable to this R8 despite being 3 years older. But yeah maybe you're not the target audience for this type of camera.
This is dude is just fed up on the canon cripple hammer lol
i am stuck on weather to upgrade or not, r10,, or the r7, or the ff r8. i take care of the marketing and internet presence at a small town iowa ford dealership. i take all the stills of the inventory and short vid clips. i recently started a youtube page for how to- why to videos. i also woulf like to start shooting internet based commercials. currently i have a T8i with 3 different lenses. spare batteries and hot shoe mic kit. i dont know if i really need 4 k vid yet but the option with good af would be great.
shooting conditions in iowa can be hot, wet, snow and ice..etc...
please give me your professional opinions...
or should i just stick with my dslr or just a step higher dslr?
@@TAZTALKS2022 Thanks for your comment. You'll definitely get a huge upgrade in image quality and AF performance with any of those cameras. If you shoot a lot indoors or in poor lighting, the R8 will give you the best image, but if you need a camera with best weather sealing and heat/cold resistance, I'd recommend the R7.
@HyunRalphJeong ok ty, no matter which way i go because of expense i will probably have to get an adapter for lenses?
Thank you for your response. I do enjoy your videos...
When sales drops for 3 consecutive years, and sales going to Sony, it's when we start to see decent features to price ratio, from canon.
For the 1000$ u save on this camera you can buy a gimbal witch is way better than Ibis, you can also buy extra batteries with a battery grip and an extra lens 😁
can it be powered by a power bank while you are using it?
Yep
Battery is bad?
Depends on how you use it but I didn't think it was bad for stills. For video, it lasts about 50 minutes
Can someone please tell me if R8 is weather sealed
Partially but not as much as the R7, rated to 0C instead of -10C
This is a hidden gem of a bargain from Canon!!
What if one wants a fast zoom, without having to adapt and loose the benefits of a small FF camera, and without going to Sony?
What fast zooms does Sony have?
@@HyunRalphJeong third party ones from tamron and sigma, such as 28-75 2.8.
@@ilanhoward Yeah, I have that lens but it's not exactly small because of its length. But obviously a lot cheaper.
Give us a few ….???
Suggest us some 🙄
I think Canon could include ibis in the camera of this price point.
What camera are you currently using?
but i very like 6d and i have 6d
I have a ?
I have read elsewhere it’s a good portable cook top to fry my eggs
C’mon Canon what were you thinking
Its overpriced. Still waiting on that sub $1k FF camera Canon....
RP? Good deals for 24-105 f4-7 kit…,
@@stormsandfishing5448 This is what I got almost a year ago. Still happy with my RP.
@@DjimmyTrovy Any shutter speed issues with the Rp, especially in low light? And is the sensor still ok in 2023?
@@hugochen2359 No shutter issues so far. The sensor, in my opinion, is still pretty good. The dynamic range is a bit low but otherwise I can't fault it. I mainly shoot stills.
@@DjimmyTrovy Also about what % of the performance does the RP bring you to the R8? I don’t care about video capabilities at all and most youtubers factor that into their opinion… I only want the perspective from the photography quality standpoint, like sensor, shutter speed, AF etc…
My plan might be to get a few good ef lenses that dont break the bank, try the RP second handed, and if I like full frame I’ll get the R8 if I don’t I’ll get the R7. Then I’ll sell the RP for a small lost.
i sale canon buy nikon now
R8 IS BAD
