Where contraband can be a man.
Powerful words of liberty and dignity. Everyone should know exactly what this song is about.

Unfortunately, I think the reactor missed it, entirely. If your "reaction" doesn't even touch the most profound element of the performance, in this case, the lyrics, I'm lost as to what value you're adding, besides stealing clicks and upvotes for the hard work of others through playing their music.

Such a powerful song. It just tears at your heart. My family are Ukrainian Jews and sometimes I think about the similarities between the slaves in the US and us running from the Nazis back across the ocean. Evil has many faces and all of it has no place in G-d's world.

Bluegrass has a great tradition of Civil War songs. I think this is one of the best. It captures the torment of slavery and the willingness to risk life to escape from it. Written by the great Chris Stapleton and Mike Henderson (playing the mandolin here).

Jamel_AKA_Jamal this song punches you in the gut and haunts you the rest of your life.... I went with my husband to Louisiana on a business trip, we were both born and raised in California and had not been to the South. I love history since I was a little girl so we went to a plantation tour and I made it through the first two rooms and I had to stop... I literally could not continue, I wanted to throw up. I was just so struck by the luxury of the house and the hellish lives of the slaves and their absolute horrific plight and how mistreated they were- I was so angry and wanted to scream at the people on the tour “how can you just stroll through this house of horrors?!” I was beside myself and sobbed uncontrollably. I couldn’t speak, I just sobbed hard salted tears for my fellow man and their nightmare. The tour continued and I was sitting on a chair in the hallway and someone put their hand on my shoulder and it was an elderly black man, he was a museum docent. I thought he was going to tell me to catch up with my tour, but he sat with me gently as I cried. I tried apologize, I mean this was insane... he shouldn’t have had to console me but I could not keep it together. I asked how he could stand being there... he said he had to, it was his duty to his ancestors and it was the least he could do to bear the pain each day he was there. Eventually, I collected myself and he walked me out of the house. I will never forget that man or the reality of this shameful part of our history. This song brings me right back to that day in the hallway of that plantation house.

@@jodiescookin1 such an honest thing to share and I feel we can do this here in this space Jamal has created. It seems to be evolving as we all pass through this difficult time. Your story moved me and reminded me of walking up the wooden steps into the secret annexe in the Anne Frank house (of course it was never her 'house'), where I also had a visceral experience no one else seemed to be feeling.

Yes! I've seen 3 black men & 1 black woman react. Only the woman got it. It was written by Chris Stapleton & Mike Henderson, 2 white men. How can they be moved enough by the plight of this man yearning for freedom to write this powerful song but there are black people who don't understand. Sad. BTW I am a white woman who's almost reached 4 score years. I wonder if they'd get that reference.

He asked is women can she run, "their won't be time to change your mind, can you run". It is a do or die situation. For your next track can I suggest you give Elvis Presley , If I Can Dream, a spin?

  • @cicconnicicconni1182

A song about having one shot at making a break for freedom where by he asks his woman "can you run" there may not be another chance. He wants to take the lives of a few "grey coats" if he gets the chance to "wrap his hands around a gun" it is the only thing that will "remove the taste of bondage from his tongue". Believe me , this song wasn't intended as a song to square dance to. It was all about the realities of the American civil war where brother was killing brother and black people were treated like shit and were now taking advantage of the situation.

I have requested someone react to this so many times ... you did it without any pleading ... thanks, brother. (Edit) - You think you could react to "Drunkards Prayer" by Stapleton? It's a slow song and I'm sure you've heard it by now but it would be a blessing, peace.
