Video is 2 years old, but wow. AWESOME video bro. I was looking for an alternative to charcloth today when wife yelled at me for using her dishtowels for charring, lol. I'm subscribing now, keep up the good work!!
I just wanted to thank you for all of the knowledge that you pass on. I'm absolutely sold now on the superiority of the charred punk wood. I just made my first batch last night and am very impressed at not only how easily it takes a spark, but also how long and hot it smolders. I just need to find a good striker for my flint and steel kit. It's starting to get a little rough on my Mora. Thanks again.
justin, thx4 this video, too! hey man, today i charred punk wood! did it just like your other flint & steel video! charred it in a tin! anyway, just as you showed in the instructional video was easy as pie, even for a woman! i found a big quartz rock on the RR tracks and found it to shower down sparks the best into the punk wood tin (wonder big quartz works best if because it has more mass to it being big?). anyway, the big quartz rock showers down massive sparks into the punk wood tin and right away i get an ember! awesome! really awesome to me! stole a bird's nest and lit the bird's nest with the punk wood tin ember by blowing on it like you did in the video! i'm really smiling! thank you very much!!!!!
The way you do thing on your videos is awesome, I think the way you do thing to start fires and make fires ,is some of the best ways to do it . I like all the ways you do it. The way you start fires is my primary way I start a fire . I still have to have char cloth for my fire piston , But it is just for fun . Flint &Steel is the best for me .
Thanks buddy, I found out now what punk wood is, I did ask the question on your other video, we just call it rotting wood, thanks for the video, I did enjoy it.
Well done. This is indeed a good method of smothering smouldering tinder if you do not have a tinderbox. If the earth is damp, I have wrapped the smouldering tinder in leather before burying, but it does the leather no good after several uses. Regards, Keith.
Could I just bury some punkwood under the firepit before I light my fire, and then dig it up in the morning? Would there be enough heat to char it if it was only under, say, an inch of dirt?
another thing (a failure) after successfully charring punk wood in a tin (which works great)! i found some tree fungus and charred it. the tree fungus doesn't lite with F&S and also doesn't even lite with a bic lighter, either. the charred tree fungus was a failure. then i pulled charred pieces of punky wood out of the fire the next morning, put them in a tin and attempted to ignite them with F&S and that also was a failure. however, the CPW that was charred in a tin does absolutely work right away and with little effort. i use a 3 legged 12" cast iron real deep skillet/pot with a long handle, a cast iron trivet in the bottom and a lid on the picnic table on the patio for a small fire pit. i char in the deep cast iron skillet and place grill tops over the skillet to cook with. when i'm done i just put the lid on the 3 legged pot/skillet and go inside. so, i burned punky wood lastly in the 3 legged pot and put the lid on. then the next morning i pulled the charred punky wood from the pot/skillet and that's what i failed at attempting to lite with F&S. i must have done something wrong, but i'll look into it a see what the problem is. hey, i did see a YT video where a guy banged 2 rocks together causing sparks to land on a pile of real fine real dried fat wood and the fat wood took ember and then the fat wood also took to flame (all from only the sparks caused by 2 rocks banged together). the guy in the video did say that it's hard to do though and many failure happen when attempting it. thx justin!
Hi Justin, I wonder when you will start making video again, since you moved ? I make my char punk in the winter, in my woodstove. I just pack a quart tin full of punk and put it in my stove for about 10-15 minutes and have a pint or quart of it. Of coarse yours is Great, it you don't have something to put it in and you need some.
Karin6509 I think punk char burns slightly better than regular charcoal when starting a fire. That said, I think you might say that charred punk wood might fall under the category of charcoal.
hi i liked the video im in a electric wheelchair i cant get onto the ground who do i get fire started with wet rotten wood with out having to light 100 peaces of paper and gas i bought catch my self on fire every time i do it i have alot of wood that needs burnt
You can actually char the material in the dirt instead of just snuff it. Keep it shallow and as close to your fire as possible. Close enough to pull some fire on top of it. You're basically doing the same thing with a tin, but without the tin. And your material is under the fire instead of on top of it
If you have a fire bed that has burned down to just a few coals just throw the punk wood on and bury in the ashes of the fire. Same method but a bit simpler.
I learn from a man in Honduras to start fire in stead of blowing on fire he use metal tube one and a half inch around about 2 foot long to blow work good, maybe one 8 inch long may work...
The way you started with a pit of punk wood to start a fire is a large waste. Use a small piece in your tinder nest and start your fire with that. The rest of that could have been stored in a basket in your bushcraft camp
***** A gift your Grandfather that no else got, that keeps on giving, that great...I trying to make more punk wood now to see what went wrong, I will not give up tell I get a fire...
Your method is totally natural and easily renewed. Just what the doctor ordered. 👍
this is extremely useful info. I did it myself after watching your video and worked like a charm. A big thanks to you.

I hope the nest wasnt still in use
I heard that you you could pull the ashes out to create a pit, put your punk wood in then bury the wood with the ashes. How does that work?

Brilliant bro, nicely charred punkwood. And the pouch looks awesome.

You are the man. Very informative. That's the way you do it guys.
Absolutely, please send anything that you think I can benefit from.

Nice video. I have never tried puck wood before I'll have to give it a shot. Also did you say you make those leather holders?
Cheers!
Another excellent video &Thanks
No link on your fire kit. This video is 8 years old, so what modifications have you made on your fire kit?
Dude, charcloth IS a renewable resource - my underwear is always wearing out. It's just not renewable in the wild, when you need it.
What's a Punk wood? and where do you find it?
Another one on the list to try great minds think a like that's how I was going to do my tins nice bro
I believe the technical term is "charcoal". Nice video. :)

I didn't find a link to your fire starter belt bag.

I'd guess in an emergency situation you'd have charred Punk Wood in your tin?
Drop the negativity, and the video would be really good. The content was great.
