The nice thing about the cutting mats from Dollar Tree is, they have one completely smooth side and one with a kind of rough side. If you do,your writing on the smooth side and place the rougher side on the fabric, it helps it not slide around quite as much. Plus, you get two mats for $1.
I so appreciate your sharing this!! I've been trying to come up with options for structure in some prototypes, those cutting boards are PERFECT, less dear than soft and stable, more rigid and quieter than Amazon bubble mailers. And I can look at the placemats also, both thrifted and cheapie new. I'd still like to reclaim or upcycle high volume clean trash, but it's a little much to try to do so during the design phase.
This is exactly what we used to do in the sign shop i worked at. So much easier. I use to score the line lightly before I used the marker so the ink sets into the plastic and won't rub off. Great for quilting
I use this for my patterns...but go a step further when I write on them with sharpies (they tend to rub off with alot of handling) I cover the written areas with a piece of clear packing tape to keep written parts intact on template 😊👍

wait wait WAIT rn! I've been wanting to find thinner, flexible plastic sheets for my 3D media mischief. I've been cutting up the large plastic cutting boards from Dollarama for years now to extend their lifespan and functionality in the kitchen. Why it never occurred to me to branch out from there, I have no idea. But they will be PERFECT in all their awkwardly oversized glory to build the bones of whatever cat furniture I'm inclined to try. thankya thankya thnakya
I just found your channel and find it informative. I'm an Indigenous crafter in Canada and would make items for friends and family. It's become where I want to be a bag creator full time and been looking at crafting and selling information. Just want to say thank you for sharing.
I spy Cosmic :D! When I was making carved cakes I used 1/4" thick translucent corrugated plastic boards for templates. (Like what they use for lawn signs now, just translucent so traceable) While they are soft enough to be cut with an Xacto blade, they have enough depth for a rotary blade to push against laterally.
It is! Though I do prefer my Tops & Bobbins templates to these. I finished this one off when I was done recording. I just didn't want to show the whole pattern out of respect for Diedelbug ya know?
Girl ,1st of all you crack me up! I love watching your Tutorials coz I've learned alot from you! I've been looking for something to trace my patterns on who would of thought those things would work! How great so I ordered a handful on Amazon. Now can you tell us how to organize them now that they are on "acrylic" & looking professional? Lol Thanks again girl, I'm loving your channel & I get a good laugh watching & learning.
You can also laminate your prices using an iron on low heat and parchment paper. The paper goes between the iron and the pattern piece that is between the laminate material.
Yup! Still paper though. I wouldn't want to use the rotary blade :( That's MOSTLY why I advocate people save up for the acrylic templates. They're just a lot easier to deal with.
Very nice tip. I was going to suggest bristol board to use as templates but I admit it may not be too strong when using rotary cutters. I like the plastic placemat idea. I will get some.
Love the name Fierce Kittenz... Thanks for the reminder to check writing and putting pattern underneath.. I bought sew easy texture templates.. Which look smaller, but I had voucher and 1 day left so bought 5 packs .. I will Check with amazon ones though... Ty

Thank you, what a great idea. Also have you done anything on your show about thread? I am making more bags and small backpacks.I still get confused about the weight ect. I live rural, 80 mlles to sewing stores. I bought thread to thick didn’t really work. Is there a average thread that will work on everything or do you have to have this thread for this and this for that 🤪 please help!! ❤😢😊
You could totally use that too. I think it's easier to get a clean cut from the placemats though. Sometimes my exacto knife doesn't cut through foamcore very well.
I'm from India. I see your videos because I have a passion to learn how to design and sew bags. I have to learn many things. I want to start my own brand in India. Pattern making is really a challenging task. Can you suggest any online classes to learn how to design and make a bag ..??
hello, i wanted to send you a message. i wanted to ask you if you ever made an old fashioned bag like they had in the old west that they carried over their shoulders or horse i call it a wellsfargo bag? and would you know where i could find a pattern? thank you i love your videos.😀😃
Do you have a picture? A quick google search turned up a lot of different results. In short, I personally have a tall messenger bag pattern as well as a commuter/motorcycle style holster bag pattern available on my shop (shop.fiercekitten.com/).
@@fiercekittenz Thank you so much appreciate your reply. I was thinking about the shape and the bottom pocket would be rounded and not too thick, i was not able to find what i was looking for on google, thats why i reached out to you. Its a bag the old wellsfargo men carried i have only seen one and it was beyond repair. My exhusband had it. So its lost. I will look on your link you sent. Again thank you so much.
Heh that's what I mean! I need the one I have for fabric! This is a Famore rotary blade. They aren't out for purchase yet, so I don't want to jack it up.
All you need is a friend who has a CO 2 engraver. They can import your pdf pattern into the program, use 1/16 acrylic sheets, and make your pattern templates for very little cost.
there is a pattern that I would like an acrylic template for 1) because I would like to make lots of that bag 2) I would like to use a rotary cutter for it, but it isn't on tops and Bobbins, is there any place else I can look?
I use my Cricut to cut the cheap placemats -- I glue 2 of each piece together so I can cut the fabric with my rotary cutter (and not have to trace the pattern).
kitchen shears will cut the plastic very easily. I prefer the Betty Crocker kitchen shears from dollar tree. Actually, they are what I am currently using for fabric scissors. Dont laugh until you try them.. I was and am pleasantly surprised. I would buy professionally done templates and rulers IF I could afford them.
If you can see, I have another ruler that I use to ensure I have a straight line. I don't have very steady hands, so without using the ruler as a guide for the nib of the pen, it'll be super wobbly.
@@fiercekittenz I think you misunderstood me ;) I meant that you could just put the pattern to the edge of the mat, and then you wouldn't even need to draw or cut the first line, the mat already have å straight edge ;) Just an observation ;) Sorry if my English is bad, I am Norwegian, but I hope you understood what I mean. Btw, love your videos...
What a great option to see if you will use the pattern often or while saving up for the acrylic templates.

Yup! I use the dollar tree flexible cutting "boards" for my quilting templates. Love this method, never even thought about getting acrylic ones 🤔

I really like the clear mediums for templates, because then matching fabric placement/fussy cutting is so much easier.
Exactly! Love fussy cutting with these things!
Keep the videos up, I love your channel. I’m completely new to bag making and your tips have really helped.
Thanks for the tips on using an affordable option for pattern templates. I'm definitely going to look into what we have available here in NZ.

how neat!! also that animal crossing fabric is everything

Bristol would be good! Just would advise sanding down the edges so you don't scratch up fabric maybe?

I love the fabric that you have there. May I ask where you get it from?
Cosmic Fabric Creations
have you made the zippy clutch pattern yet? I am having trouble with putting the side zipper pocket together... help??
I can't find the Amazon link for this product
While your at the dollar tree they have a small rotary cutter in the craft aisle.
Also look at local makerspaces for laser cutting services for cheap.
What about foamcore? You can't see through it but if that isn't a problem then seems like it would work too.
You could totally use that too. I think it's easier to get a clean cut from the placemats though. Sometimes my exacto knife doesn't cut through foamcore very well.
Fierce Kittenz you’re probably right!

Your Rotary blade won't fall apart. My dad use a rotary blade to cut shingles on a roof! Just don't use the blade on fabric after you use it.

Hah yes this too! When I made the video, it wasn’t as easy to find someone with a CO2 laser. Now I have two!
I do not see the link to where you purchased the thin vinyl sheets of lower cost plastic placemats.
It was right there in the description - second sentence: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I4WL65E/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Reach out to the pattern maker. Ask if they have partnered with someone to produce their patterns as templates.
Find a makerspace. Most have laser cutting services for little above cost.
I use my Cricut to cut the cheap placemats -- I glue 2 of each piece together so I can cut the fabric with my rotary cutter (and not have to trace the pattern).

I tried "splitting" the front panel and messed it up so bad.
😱😱😱😱😱 Where did you get that ACNH fabric from?
Cosmic Fabric Creations!
Love your videos :)
I just don't get the first line you drew ;) ... Why put the pattern away from an already straight edge in the placement mat ;)
If you can see, I have another ruler that I use to ensure I have a straight line. I don't have very steady hands, so without using the ruler as a guide for the nib of the pen, it'll be super wobbly.

Why can't one use the paper pattern directly on the bag material, like we do for clothes?
You can. There's nothing stopping you from doing that, but acrylics really help boost production if you need to make several of the same type quickly.
Durability.
Can you use an exacto knife to cut the material?
If you're VERY careful, maybe. I wouldn't feel safe doing it.
Making my first tote bag wish me luck 😅
I glue my pattern pieces to Manila folders and cut them out
Love this idea too. Simple.
