EFI And An Overdrive Gear - This 1967 Dodge Coronet 500 Convertible Is Finally A Perfect Driver

  • It's been well over a year since we last saw Don's 1967 Coronet 500 convertible on the channel. Since we last saw it, the bulk of the project has finally been completed, with only a few straggling issues left to be sorted. But I never got around to wrapping up the project with a final video, because it left Rocket to make it to the last big car show of the season last year before it was completely finished. Since that time, I have been asked many times about the Silversport Transmissions A41 overdrive that we installed in the car. So today, I thought I would finally do a project wrap up video, and give you my thoughts on this setup. In a word? Good. Two words? Pretty good. More words than that? Now that I've got the tuning figured out, this thing shifts great under all conditions, and satisfyingly barks the tires on the second gear shift when the driver chooses. Check it out.

    I remember my father had a 66 Coronet convertible 383 4 speed. Smelled like mildew all the time. Now every time I smell mildew I remember that car. It was a cool car even then. Thanks for the video Jamie 👍

    I graduated HS in 1978 in Roy, Montana with a class size of 11. One of my HS cars was a 1969 Road Runner (440 4 speed) and sold it for $380 (bought for $400). I moved to the biggest nearby town (Billings, Montana) and after cruising out on a country road, I spotted a 1966 Coronet 2 door hardtop with 383 and auto AND the console was in beautiful shape. The farmer sold it to me for $200. I cruised all summer, roasted many tires, and sold it for $185 so I could buy a 1969 GTX (for $500) with auto. My story is as sad as it is common with us old guys . . . I sold all those cool cars when they were so cheap . . . curses for my lack of fore thought. Like Jamie, I don’t prefer ragtops and passed on a clean 1 owner 1967 Barracuda small block auto back in 1981 for $1,000 because it was a convertible. Funny story, I became a neighbor to the lady selling the Barracuda back 20 years ago. I remembered her when she saw my current Mopar’s and told me her story about that the Barracuda convertible that her parents bought her for her HS graduation in 1968. It was the same one I passed on.

      I hear you man. I junked plenty of old muscle cars for $40 just to get a bag of pot. Drive them to the junk yard and walk away with $40 in hand. We didn`t know back then.

      I sold a 1972 Camaro, a 1978 Camaro, and a 1972 Corvette between 2000 and 2008. That was right before prices skyrocketed. If I had waited just a little while longer I could have easily tripled what I got for them.

    Love that car! And the Simpson (Waterloo, IA) dealership takes me back to my youth. They’re not around anymore. If Don ever wants to remove that dealership badge, I’d buy it off of him.
    Sounds like we’re going to try a Terminator X setup when putting the 5.7 in the Valiant. Hoping it ends up where that Sniper setup is now- fun and reliable.
    Thank you for putting g out yet another great video!

    700R4 GM four speed OD went into my ‘71 El Camino, with a 323 rear and a Scat 383 stroke crank it was literally thee most perfect driving vehicle I’ve ever owned. The trans crossmember already had predrilled holes accommodating the longer tail housing as if GM engineers had envisioned the 4 sp ten years before it was available. An upgrade retrofit horseshoe shifter detent and gear indicator plate made it look pristinely factory. Super easy and best upgrade I’ve ever done to a car. Don’t underestimate GM 4 speed OD trannies.

    I am partial to the ‘66-‘67 Coronet; my dad bought a new ‘66 Coronet 500, and my first car was a ‘67 440 hardtop. Years ago I read an article on the Turbine Car program and it showed a Chrysler photo of a close to production turbine powered ‘66 Coronet - on the hood was the faux scoop later to appear on the ‘67 R/T.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  2 місяці тому

      I’d really like to see that article. My understanding was that the ‘66 Charger was the stillborn production turbine car. A straight line can be drawn from the turbine car to the ‘66 Charger - specifically the fancy Charger interior with four bucket seats, full length console, and the round gauge theme. I’m sure there is more to be found.

    The idle circuit isn’t too bad to work on. You can actually reset the IAC. It involves adjusting the throttle blades. The instructions are out there from Holley. Only other issue with any EFI install is finding a constant 12V source while crank and run. It is recommended to use an ignition set up that doesn’t use the ballast resistor and use both IGN 1 and IGN 2 with a relay to provide clean 12v . This could most likely help with it running even better.
    Great work on the car, I love the videos

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  2 місяці тому +1

      I did all that, brother. It’s running a Hyper Spark. The original issue was it had no IAC control on startup, so I had to open the throttle blades excessively to get it to fire at all. After a few seconds it would show an idle count of like 90 and then it would take over and idle down, but I couldn’t get a stable idle below like 1000. That seems to have magically fixed itself, as it now (usually) fires and idles down as one would expect. I messed with many things chasing down this problem, and what fixed it was throwing up my heads and having the owner put some miles on it. When it came back, I re-tuned it and it worked.

    So the question remains; would you rather have this new Chevy transmission that, as you said, is now running great, or an old reliable automatic 727 tourque flight? I figure that newer trans. Must have made improvements over the years but wasn’t the tourque-flight one of the best transmissions ever made? Thx again and what a beautiful car! Did they use the 900 CFM (4bbl) sniper? I found that my BB 64 Ford tends to fall on its face because it's just too much "carb" for it. But then again, it's a modest build with 8.5:1 compression and my tuning abilities are questionable.
    Thanks for another entertaining vid Jamie!

    • @rennkafer13
      @rennkafer13 2 місяці тому

      I like the idea, but I question whether the improved geometry 1) improves handling more than the big unsprung weight increase degrades it, and 2) whether it improves it more than changing the upper arm angle with a taller ball joint/knuckle (ala FMJ chassis knuckle or aftermarket upper arm). Now if they were machined from aluminum...

      @@DeadDodgeGarage nah, goes between the knuckle (upright, spindle, whatever ya want to call it) and the ball joint. Restores the lower arm geometry for a better camber curve. It's a good idea, but in his iteration, it's HEAVY... which isn't great.

      Damn right! Change a few bar sizes here or there, replace any worn components (bushings - always,) tweak the alignment specs for modern radial tires, and ideally firm up the sloppy factory power steering box a bit, and you’ve got a truly excellent combination.

      They added torque boxes front and rear to beef up the unibody. There may be other strengthening as well. But they noticeably twist and flex when lifted off the ground.

      It can be very challenging to get those lines correct. Even on a straight original car. The fit and finish was never amazing, and 50 years of bumps and bruises later… yeah. Perfect doesn’t exist, and we often have to settle for goodish.
