Hey Matt! Haven't seen u in awhile! Not only has this series flown under my radar, but Jeff Lemire, in general has flown under my radar entirely until this yr, lol! Mike's vids on "Black Hammer" & "Dept. H" really made me smack myself upside the head & think about how such cool, unique, different books just passed me by! I mean, I was familiar w/Lemire's name; but for reasons I can't understand-- nonetheless explain-- I never looked at any of his work!😞Smh, lol. This series sounds interesting, & the "Black Hammer" universe is very intriguing & looks like it may expand to a Mignolaverse-type level at some point! I'm currently working my way thru the Mignolaverse right now, however, so the "Black Hammer" universe will have to wait for now. But that "Dept. H" looks VERY much up my alley! So hopefully, sometime soon I'll have the dough to get the 2 omni trades that collect all 24(I think?)issues of the series! I told Mike I LUV horror/sci-fi/suspense/mystery stories set out on the ocean, or preferably-- as is the case w/"Dept. H"-- at the bottom of the ocean, & have a claustrophobic feel to them! Which is weird in a way, because I'm not AT ALL comfortable being in the water(especially if it's over my head) or ON it, like out on a boat or something! And I'm EXTREMELY claustrophobic!🙄 But when I explained to my therapist that I luv watching movies or reading comics that involve my biggest phobias because it's kinda cathartic for me & is what I call a "safety-scare"-- as I can sort of confront my fears w/out *actually* having to confront them, which leaves me able to just enjoy the feeling of fear/terror/dread that they give me(I luv being scared when it's not REAL LIFE😄)-- she said she could understand that. Anyhow, Lemire is such a lauded writer... I look forward to reading something of his! It seems that his art is more "hit or miss" or maybe an acquired taste for a fair amount of people. Having looked at his style, I guess I can see why; but I think it's fantastic! From the preview pages I saw, it is PERFECT for a story like "Dept. H", imho! I think it's like u said in this video... sometimes a certain style of art works great for a certain kind of story, while it wouldn't work so well for a story from a certain other genre-- like u how said Dustin Nguyen's art style works perfect for "Descender", but u don't think it would work as well for u if it were a superhero comic. From what u said of the story, & what I saw of the art, I'd agree w/u 100%! Great review, Matt! I'm glad u guys have brought Jeff Lemire out of the shadows of the recesses of my mind, lol! Thanx, guys!😊👍🏻👍🏻

I ended up getting both white bordered versions of both volumes with vol 2 being the DCBS variant so the spines match haha. I read the entire series and loved the art, story, and characters! This was one of the first comic series that got me back into reading since 2009. Glad I expanded my comic book world from just reading Marvel and DC lol

It's a good story with good art. I think he could have done away with 5-6 less issues in the second book - a lot of it felt like he had an idea for Ascender midway through the descender book and ended up making room for it. Solid 7/10.
The built of the Image deluxe editions is pretty great. Not Dark Horse great, but great nonetheless.

Not a big Lemire fan. Sweet Tooth had gooaction but story was ok. Black Hammer is meh. Did like his Green Arrow run. His artist in that story was good. This artist water color is very good. Order both Descender and Ascender trade paperbacks.

Descender was really underwhelming to me. It was very predictable, and I felt like the dialogue got really juvenile in certain areas. Still haven’t read a Jeff Lemire book that lives up to the hype, IMO. The Dustin Nguyen art is beautiful though, I’d hang some of those full pages on my wall.

I've read Essex County and Underwater Welder. Not bad but nothing great. Maybe his sci-fi works would be more up my alley.
