In an age where modern heroes are influencing a whole new generation, the achievements of Jeffrey Vincent Smith, M.B.E., remain unsurpassed. He is the world's best ever all-round off-road competitor in motocross, trials and enduros.
Jeff began his career at the young age of 17 and competed when the sport was raw, risky and down-to-earth. Between 1953 and 1971 JVS won more national and international titles than any rider. His achievements include two World Motocross Championships, two British Trials Championships, multiple British Experts Trial wins, four individual race wins in the Motocross des Nations and three ISDE Gold Medals.
He became a household name and a favourite in the 1960s, when motocross was a regular live feature on BBC Grandstand. When Britain pre-empted the world in the sport, Jeff was a leading light.
His story is recounted here by Jeff himself, who looks back over his remarkable career. Alongside the memories of former team mate and BSA competition manager Brian Martin, Jeff's personal and often funny account is interspersed with terrific archive footage of trials and scrambles events from the 1950s and 1960s. Very nice video. Love old footage where the spectators would show up in a suit and tie to watch a race even though I don't like suits and ties.

I worked with Jeff at Bombardier creating the Cab-Am. He was a world champ rider and a good next door neighbor. Good Luck Jeff, and if you are ever in Medford Oregon give me a call.

Wow, they are going so slow compared to today's race speeds, but they are iron men for riding those two-wheeled tanks with 1" of travel. The bikes are really struggling and torturing the riders! Riders today have it so easy; the bikes do everything for you, short of a BJ as a reward after you win the moto. lol

Relatively speaking, I seriously doubt "they are going so slow compared to today's race speed" unless you were there to witness the discrepancy first hand.
