Guatemala is the second largest country in Central America. It is washed by the waters of the Atlantic to the east and the Pacific to the west.

It is here, in Central America, that 3,000 years ago, one of the oldest Native American cultures in the world, the Maya, originated. Their influence ranged from Chiapas (Mexico) to present-day Honduras and El Salvador. Mayan temples are still hidden in the rainforests.
However, what makes Guatemala completely unique are its inhabitants. The original Mayans today make up almost half of the country's population and speak more than 20 languages. The rest are mostly half-breeds, descendants of the Maya and Spaniards, and a handful of black Garifuns still live off the Caribbean coast. They all created a colorful cultural cauldron in which Mayan traditions merged with the Catholic faith and its saints.
