    TuneD sure is a useful tool for quickly optimizing machines for particular workloads, nice to see they're using it as the default for power profile management now. The speed and performance improvements of DNF5 have been impressive especially, a great release from the Fedora Project.

    "It will keep nagging you [to upgrade the release] though." Sometimes I think the best kept secret of Linux is that the best desktop distro would be a yearly Fedora clone that's simply that one release behind with a few setup options for desktop hardening. SUSE Slowroll is the next best thing, but it's still Alpha. (I admit I ignore Canonical completely.)

    Dont underestimate weak machines! Dual core with 4 Gb Ram is just fine for simple usage scenarios. I test regularly on my 2012 MacbookAir, distros with LXQT use less than 1 Gb Ram when idle. I write letters and do light internet researches on it without issues (since i love that machine).

    I'm upgrading an older desktop to have 16gb ram for use with Fedora Kinoite. With 20-30 tabs in a browser 6 gb is used up pretty quickly.
    My "recommended" ram is 16gb. Memory is cheap.

    Fedora is a good distro, I switch to newer released about 5th or so. Flathub will keep updating for several years. I say the new Fedora take takes a cpu with 20+mb of cache, w 4 cores assigned, 8gb+ ram assigned, use it with a 4+gb gpu is a good base. When compared doing the same thing on windows it uses half the resources needed and does it faster and of course without the adds distracting you. Linux is in the last few years has taken off massively form .001of a percent to 5%+ in recent years. Importantly its does not rely on a activation server, you can easily move your os and data to a new machine at anytime and to another type of cpu too.

    • @CyberGizmo
      @CyberGizmo  14 днів тому

      I noticed Cosmic prefers a GPU as well, and completely agree with you and the best thing of all, you can install a single version of linux on as many computers as you like all for the low low price of $0.00

      While true Cosmic is developed by System76, it is not a distro, it is a Desktop Environment, so yeah it works on Fedora as well. Hope that helps untangle the title for you.

    CPU performance is less interesting to me these days. The metric to watch is power consumption which talks to battery life on a full charge.
    That's where ARM and Qualcomm are ahead of good ole Intel/AMD.

    • @CyberGizmo
      @CyberGizmo  9 днів тому

      Oh sure I've seen people on YT try and do that, I've only seen one get close to doing it right, the rest have no idea what they are doing. In my experience that takes some very specialized (read very expensive) lab instruments to do the job properly. If I was making chips and or motherboards and could afford such machines, I wouldnt be doing a YT channel that's for sure. So probably not going to see that here unless the price for the equipment comes down, and so far it hasn't.

Unfortunately ,I was not able to get Fedora to properly recognize my preexisting home partition,. Has anyone been able to get this done successfully? I have also tried the new Fedora 42 installer. but still No luck, Has anyone had success doing this ?---- Well after trying again I figured it out. You have 12 different Desktop Environments to choose from on Linux and if that doesn't work you could roll your own using Window Managers there's almost and here is a list of those: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_X_window_managers. And here is a list of Wayland WMs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_display_servers#Wayland. You can also check out reddit r/unixporn, its not porn, its people showing off what they did with their window managers. .Edit: Yeah the art of customizing Linux WIndow Managers is called "ricing".
