I don't agree with either of them.
Lily was attention seeking and Chad made an easily misconstrued comment.
There's no way anyone would seriously think that Chad Everett felt that he owned his wife.
Lily is a legend yet I do not respect her choice in this clip.
For reference, I am a progressive, liberal woman and still do not think she exhibited strength by walking out.
If she were truly strong in that moment she would have stayed to inject her own perspective about whether or not men own women.

Indeed, in 1971 homosexuality was still listed as a mental illness, and even after the APA removed the diagnosis from the DSM it took another 15-20 years before research really began to convince most of the profession that sexuality was congenital and a permanent, unalterable part of a person, not something that should be or could be altered by therapy.

There is courage in walking away but only after you've made your points. However, if you can't have a conversation about your believes and morality with someone that opposes your views than your point of view is weak before the opposition. There was no malice in what Everett was saying, he made his points as much as he could but when it came for Tomlin to express her points in a reasonable and collected manner, she choice to walk away - this is not strength. Rather you believe that Tomlin was right here or that Everett was right it, that's not my point. Tomlin didn't respect Everett enough to have a reasonable conversation with him but on the other hand Everett did respect Tomlin enough to speak his views to her. He wasn't mad or afraid, he said what he wanted to say - he got his points across. Agree or disagree with them. Tomlin didn't give Everett the chance to change his mind. Conversations like this are not about changing a persons mind at the time of the conversation, these conversations allow for reflection and if the other sees value in the opposing points, a time for personal correction. This reflection is on both sides.

@@ngpainter No, it's not her job - she's not getting paid to convince anyone but running away from standing up for yourself in a conversation is cowardly.
She has nothing to lose except what, the conversation? Why get yourself into a conversation that has meaning when all you have to do is run away to your echo chamber and feel superior there?
You should never put anyone down for the sake of it but I don't think he thought what he was doing was wrong - it was just his way of looking at things. There is a difference, one is out to hurt someone because you can and one is just how you see the world and live within it. Right or wrong. The man is dead, can't ask him now but if you could, I wonder what he would say?
Walk tall or walk small. Tomlin had the opportunity to talk about how she really felt and instead turned tale and ran away. This could be a conversation where she had equal ground with Everett. Woman want to feel powerful, they want the respect of men? Than the first thing they need to do is have a conversation with them about their differences and their common ground. Men and woman are different but intellectually is where they can meet and can be equals. That's where we can find common ground and progress together.

Cavett's show was the best of the late night ones on air at that time. Carson was strictly about humor and laughs and he would've never had the type of guests that Cavett had on and enjoyed. Griffin was a less successful Carson clone and played it safe as well. Those unexpected moments, both good and bad, were what made the show so watchable.

Because this was back in the day when talk shows weren't vertically integrated promotion vehicles for Hollywood. I mean, they were, but they also sometimes asked real questions and had unplanned moments. This kind of TV doesn't exist anymore. People like Fallon are highly controlled and they see their jobs as to sell whatever their guests are coming to promote, that includes making the guest look as good as possible. This is also partly why Jimmy fake laughs at everything all the time.
