@@populator777 I do love how Voigtlander tends to have a less cold and clinical rendering compared to the Nikkors and I do have the 50mm f/1.8 E Series lens, which I love because of its size. But when I bought it I didn't own that and my goal was to get the best quality standard lens I could for my manual focus Nikon film SLRs. It's probably the ideal travel lens because of its size and the 40mm is perfect if you want something for the street. I probably wouldn't recommend it to an impoverished student when you consider that the Nikkors are all pretty good too but as a top tier tiny manual focus option, it's great.
@patternsinsand right thanks! I currently a 35mm f2 and 50mm f1.8 nikkor ais and would like to slowly build a lens collection for my f3, and I'm quite torn between voigtlander and nikkor. I will take yours as a reference.

That was my favourite too. The Pro Image really makes the yellows and reds pop. I was wondering if these intros were getting more and more absurd but let's push this boat out and see how far I can take it.
Very good video. I have the Ais version , it is a bit bigger, bits the focus ring is much better and easy to use. It is a superb combo with my Nikon FM3A. I do love this lens.

Thanks for the comment. I really like the look of my non-S version but I have to admit that there's something very 'Nikon pre-ai' about that knurled focus ring.
@@patternsinsand I think perhaps we just both love saying the word "knurled" 😛. If Voigtländer's caught your fancy, might I humbly suggest that if you should see, on your travels, a Voigtländer 58mm f1.4 for F mount (don't know why they call it SL mount), you take a close look at that one. If you liked the character of the 40, the 58 (despite it's admittedly narrower field of view), is perhaps the finest Voigtländer you can find for Nikon's F mount. Much like the Nikkor 58mm f1.4g (which costs north of $1,500USD brand new), it has a curved plane of focus, allowing for that creamy, dreamy look around the edges even when your centre point is pin-sharp. But when you stop it down, that effect goes away, giving edge to edge sharp at around f5.6. And as a bonus for wide-open shooters, it gives that soft little glow at f1.4 you often find on (far more expensive) Leica lenses, which the Nikkor 58 lacks. But the Nikkor has autofocus... But seriously, if you get a chance to try the 58 1.4, give it a whirl (but bring a VND if you're out on bright days)
I have the SLII version (rubber focus ring). I paired it with D90 and Z6. It's great on both bodies. Color rendition is sweet and quite contrasy. Images looked sharp edge to edge from f2. And the most important, it's fun to use.
This version of the 40mm is wonderfully compact, similar to my 50mm series-e. I know the great feel from the 58mm SL2, I have no other lens with such a great focus and aperture ring feel. However, I will probably get the newer version, especially because of the rabbit ears, it fits better with my F2. Optically, the two are supposed to be identical.
@@patternsinsand Also, my F2 "only" has the DP-1, so without the rabbit ears there is no working aperture measurement... OK, I can also use lenses without it, but it's more complicated. 😅 What do you think about the other Voigtländer lenses for the F mount?
@@CCfiftyeight I own the 20mm f/3.5 pancake and it definitely deserves a review here. It doesn't have the reputation of the 40mm - maybe like many pancake wide angles it's a bit soft in the corners wide open but I love it. I'm not too familiar with many of the others but Voigtlander are definitely doing something special with their manual focus lenses. Modern coatings but low element-count and small size. They combine the best of vintage, with that 3d pop but modern rendering. And without being monsters like many Zeiss lenses.
@@patternsinsand It's a shame that the 20mm is no longer available, I would have been interested in that because of the focal length. I'll probably give myself the 40mm for Christmas, it's something I've been interested in for a long time.
While, I believe, the optical design is similar for the multiple versions of this lens. I much prefer the handling of SL-IIS version of this lens. The focus ring, being larger, ergonomically works better in my case. And the slightly more recessed front element has better flare control, albeit, I also use a hood.

The only voigtlander I have is the the 40mm 1.2 and they packed magic pixie dust in that one until no more would fit.
Fortunately they do have enough left over for their other lenses but the 1.2 sounds amazing.

Yes, the knurled ring of the newer version and the rabbit ears really send out that gorgeous Nikon aperture-coupled vibe. Perfect for the F2.
