The Canon 85mm Serenar f/1.9 LTM Lens on the Streets of Bangkok and Berlin
…in which I take a dreamy f/1.9 lens vintage Canon lens on for the Leica Thread Mount onto the streets of Bangkok and Berlin. But the dream descends into a virulent nightmare. Can the Canon power through the COVID or does my fever affect my photography, turning my shots into febrile phantasms of my own distorted perception of the world?
One thing's for sure. With 85mm on a Micro Four Thirds creating an effective 170mm focal length, it's the perfect lens for social distancing. And just maybe that vintage character can capture something of my murky mind's eye.

    Okay, feel free to ignore this question that I've been pondering for at least the last year. Has the Golden Age of Street Photography gone (probably reaching its demise in about 1982), or am I just looking back with a pair of Kodacolor tinted specs ? Are we living in a uni-culture post-modernist dystopia. Granted Bangkok and Berlin looked very different ... but they are probably cultural extremes on opposite sides of the globe. Don't worry, you aren't the first and you won't be the last person coming back from Bangkok with a dose of something 🤧🤪😷

      Good point. I've definitely witnessed how cities have become more homogeneous and it's getting difficult to avoid all of the McDonalds and Starbucks signs around the world. But I'm starting to appreciate that even in familiar places there are photographic opportunities. We're never going to be able to recapture 1970s New York but maybe we just need to get some perspective. And the post-modernist dystopia is still cool :)

    As you dropped “febrile phantasms of photographic forays” I thought you were going to loop back to your earlier catholic comment,,,,, The editing of Bangkok night was excellent; between the off focus vid and the soundscape, was very very fever dream. Bravo. I loved all the Bangkok shots; bangers, indeed. The spy-esque parking garage would have been a top choice for me, maybe just as such an almost jarringly counterpoint to the neon (which were great). No, I don’t have that lens. If I could get my old man’s FED fixed I’d consider it for that, but this vid has almost made me fire up the eBay monster and look at that Olympus… me, who hates digital because the bloody menus drive me insane,,, Pleased you seem to have bounced back from the cooties; hope there’s no long leg brain drag for you.

    A very cool concept to do pet photos using inspiration from photographers in other genres. Very cool project. Personally I view Bruce Gilden as an entitled, self-important, parasite "artist" - he might be lovely in day to day interactions - but his approach to subjects is disrespectful and itself not worty of respect. His photographic style is one thing, and that is legitimate and ironically, I prefer the Bruce Gilden style pics you did! You, however, treated your subject with utmost respect - even though copying Gilden's style still. Terry Richardson might be edgy, but generally he is so with consenting subjects. Loved it for the tongue in cheek vibe you always have.

    • @patternsinsand
      @patternsinsand 2 дні тому

      Yeah, ethical fine line with these too photographers. Gilden's aesthetic is definitey uncompromising and arguably disrespectful. Richardson's sadly a product of the toxic industry where his photography has found traction. In any case, it was a fun challenge.

      It's an Olympus. Definitely geared towards stills. While I don't hate the colours and appreciate the stabilization, I wouldn't want to try to do much editing with the footage, given the bitrate/codec and limited frame and resolution options. As you can see, though, the gopro is an atrocious low-light shooter (should have turned the stabilization off because it just makes the footage jittery). Thanks for the comment.

    • @ginoredden

    There are a lot of good points in the video. The 180-600 is a great upgrade to the 200-500 Ito internal zoom, the short turn from 180-600, the build quality etc, The extra 100mm for birding in good light as Nikon never had a budget friendly 600 mm lens. In many parts of the world wildlife relates to birds and then 600mm becomes a "must have" focal length. Can has the 100-500 f7.1 that is very popular and Sony the 200-600. I am not a predominatn bird shooter so I would have loved a 200-500 f5.6 build like the 180-600. for me this is the weak spot of the 150-600 and 180-600 lenses. Yes sensors have become very good and I believe the Z6/6ii sensor is a great example where high ISO is handled exceptionally well. I also think the 180-600 sharpness reach its peak with the 24mp sensor. I have the Z6ii and Z9 and although at close distance the Z9 resolve bit more detail, I honestly think the Z6ii or Z6iii is a better match with the 180-600 than the high mp Z8/9. My 500pf f5.6 resolve much more detail from the Z9 than the 180-600. Yes prime lenses are sharper. My point is this. If you going to spend the money to buy a Z8/9 and you want the best resolution from your camera, buy the 600 pf or 600 f4. The Z6iii and even Z6ii (yes the speed and focus is not at the same level as the Z6iii or Z8/9) is the optimum match for the Z180-600.

      Thanks for watching and the kind comment, David. The F5 should autofocus with the 180mm so then it's just a case of getting your head around the focal length and it's capacity for shallow depth of field - a big leap from 50-180 but it'll definitely add a new dimension. Have fun!

      @patternsinsand 15 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment. I'll check out your Canon comparison. Hard to know what is fact and what is internet myth regarding the soviet/leica compatibility issue. With a 50mm f/3.5 I see no problems regarding focusing. I think the issue might come when you use a longer focal length lens. I have a Canon Serenar 85mm f/1.9 that I'm in the process of doing a video on now. It doesn't sit comfortably on my Zorki 4K as it twists the rangefinder cam in a weird way that I have to bend back. I might try it on my FED 2, do the experiment, though really it's sacrilege to put a great Canon lens on a soviet rangefinder. Best to stick with my Canon P. I've used Jupiter 12 (35mm), Jupiter 8 (50mm) and Industar 61 on that all with no problems.

    I love this FED lens, you mentioned problems with filter / hood size etc, this is easy as Actina 36 push fit filters work with these lenses also if you use an Actina filter the thread size for the hood is 34mm so you can find a modern hood to fit this. Happy hunting.

      @@patternsinsand I use Actina yellow 2 for my lens all filters are British glass from 1950s/60s. They have yellow 1,2 also green, blue & red and the best bit is they are not expensive like Leica and Voigtlander.

    28 may be boring on FF, but what about on an APSC/DX sensor, now we're in 42mm territory but choking the light down to f/4.2. On something like the Zfc Im contemplating purchasing, would I be able to get any interesting depth of field, or am I going to be stuck with boring snapshots but less context? I here the 16-50 kit lens is a banger and does well in low light situations with the stabilization built into the lens.

    • @patternsinsand
      @patternsinsand 17 днів тому

      It's a good standard lens. That f/4.2 equivalence will impact depth of field, for sure, though that's mitigated a bit at the close focusing distance and of course it's still the same amount of light. The lack of VR on the DX bodies is what is stopping me from investing in the system. I will admit, though, that I bought the SE version of the lens with a retro ZFC style body in my thoughts.

    I watched Fellini's 8 1/2 last night and I couldn't tell you what the movie was about. I just focused on the imagery. The black and white image to me is more dramatic, more powerful and really creates more of an emotional response for the viewer. Your photos were terrific and the black and white always provides that bit of documentation that color doesn't seem to be able to capture. However I did learn there is a species of bear/wolf/monkey?/spider? in greater Australia that I didn't know existed (24:08). A terrifying looking beast and I am just going to assume it's also poisonous. Thanks.

    I recently got this camera, but I haven’t been able to figure out how to make the flash pop up on its own, I literally have to manually open it. It looks like you just slide across the lens cover and that made it pop up automatically, is that all you have to do is there a button you press? Maybe mine is broken? Thanks for reply in advance mate

    • @patternsinsand
      @patternsinsand 20 днів тому

      Yep, mine pops up on its own whenever you turn the camera on. Thanks for watching. If it still works, maybe don't think of it as broken, just that it needs a bit of encouragement, like many old things.

    My issue with the Z system is that it does not have a good selection of compact primes. The 28 in this video is an exception, but what about 24, 35, 50, and 85? The 50 1.8 is enormous. Just give me small, sharp primes. Maybe even all f4 if I must give something up.

    • @patternsinsand
      @patternsinsand 20 днів тому

      Yes, the 40 is on my list but I agree. They're going for f/1.4 lenses as their cheaper 'character' line up but they still come in as to big for a discreet set-up.

      @patternsinsand 24 дні тому

      Hi Inga, thanks for the comment. Nikon made several lenses for the Bronica system. Other than the 200mm which is known for being a bit soft, they have great reputations. The 75mm that comes with it is a Nikon and they have a 50mm wide angle that's got great reviews and is on my shopping list. Can't imagine Nikon making lenses for a third party system these days.

    I'm with you, I don't care a jot for "group rules" just the images. Simple. Looking at tech specs for modern lenses is OK for checking what the lens can and can't fo.. But always it's the photographer. The colours and clarity from the best of the "vintage lenses is often great because they have fewer elements and groups. That's it. Thank you for a great real life review.
