Man, I wanted to pull the trigger on a "Les Paul" a few weeks ago. But the knowledge I gained from watching your videos allowed me to spot a couple tell tell signs that this was a fake. The guy was furious that I pointed them out. At that point, he basically cut off communication with me and pulled the ad for the guitar. Moral of the story..... Know what you're buying!! My knowledge came from you, Sir. So, thank you for keeping me from buying a really nice FAKE Les Paul.
My partner showed me his friends Les Paul Gibson Custom in a couple of pics two weeks ago and I told him "hey that's fake" and I pointed out that the bridge had flat head screws....no nibs and the headstock was wrong. I don't think he wanted to hear that cause he simply will not talk about at all. He might be pissed at me, but I can't help it I just see the stuff now.
@@RockyH.I've had this happen to me a couple times too. One was at my local shop. He was... less than pleased, should I say. Not sure what he did with it, I'd hope he'd get in touch with who he got it from and file a police report if necessary. He seems an honest guy, I don't think he'd sell it as a gibson knowing it isn't.
@@donbishop6994 I honestly wasn't trying to be mean or condescending or anything I hope my bud knows that. I actually thought the guitar was cool actually!!!
Always loved 80's and 90's Les Pauls. My favorite of all the guitars I ever owned was my 80's Gold Top Standard followed by my 90's Studio. Really regret having to sell them when I moved country....
Can we all agree that Tim Shaw neck paf's kick ass? Not usually the biggest fan of his bridge pups but this one sounded fantastic, the best sounding guitar I've heard our boy play in a good while.
Hey Trogly, I'm curious what you (or others) use to clean the oxidation & restore Gold guitar parts without the risk of removing the plating. I know it was thicker back in the day, modern guitars the gold seems to be paper thin and come off extremely easily. I've read stay away from any guitar polish. I've had moderate success with naptha but it doesn't bring back the shine. Thanks!
I had an '83 Standard a few years ago, and I also did not care for the Shaw bridge pickup. It had too much bite for my ears, but the neck pickup did sound very good
I'm a sucker for Spotlights. I didn't build this one, but my Dad definitely would have done the inspection on it. 99% of everything coming out of the plant went through his hands. He didn't initial all guitars. Only the ones with "exceptional" tops or some other notoriety. I don't think any of the Spotlights were weight relieved. The only model getting that at the time was LP Studios. RL
I have an early 80's Les Paul Std not a special model to my knowledge, it looks a lot like the guitars at 3:03 in finish ... it's in PERFECT condition ... though I've heard the early 80's models aren't popular ... might be time to see what the market thinks !
Get yourself a set of fret rubbers/erasers to help when polishing tarnished frets before using your metal polish. I'm a massive fan of crimson guitars fret rubber set!
I wish Trogly would show what cleaners and polishes he uses to remove 50 years of gunk from that gorgeous guitar. These vids are my daily dose of guitar porn
I had Tim Shaws on a guitar I had and I agree, the neck PU's were the real star. I could get controlled feedback easily when I held a note, granted it was a 355, but the bridge PU really didn't do it for me. Now you experienced the same thing on an LP so that makes for a pretty good comparison with two different types of guitars.
Congratulations. That's a really good looking LP that has some neat subtle touches such as the binding, headstock facing and Schaller parts. I especially like the wood grain that is interesting without being overly flamed and shouting out "look at me!". The authentic aging and playing wear is cool too. For some reason it reminds me of the LP Recording models from the same period, without that model's pickups and switches,
I have had several of both ANT and ASB. Your ANT is my preferred model. But the dark, quilted ASB is more common. I also had a VERY rare ASB with the curly maple rather than the quilt top.
Aside from how nifty this awesomely oddball LP is, I must say your playing has really improved over the course of doing these videos. Kudos Trogly, its nice to watch your journey.
I love how they took the extra time to install the plates and covers for the pots and switch. Now it’s just paint or tape yet the prices have gotten much higher. Just more quality and care back then. Sounds really good to me as well while listening through my In Ear Monitors and DAC.
that's a really nice finish, i'm an acoustics sorta guy but i think that natural finish headstock is great, they ought to do that more often. that neck looks gorgeous after it was cleaned.
I don't know the whole gyst of it all but the black light test can show things that you normally can't see with the normal human eye under regular lighting conditions.... things like repair jobs or touch ups in the finish etc. HTH (hope that helps)
I had a Gibson Les Paul Spotlight Special years ago, that I bought at one of the big Dallas shows. Great guitar. But at the time, no one knew what they were. So I didn't keep it. It was one of the antigue finish ones.
Trogly, you lucked out. The guitar is gorgeous, and has that ineffable quality called mojo. That guitar really wants to be played. There is something special about it, and it sort of glows.
Not a huge fan of the spotlight specials but they have their place. I do like the sound of it and the natch headstock looks pretty cool as well. It cleaned up really well Trogly great find! Great episode loved it! 👍
I don't know if it's the fact I'm watching this on my phone when I usually watch your demos on a computer with headphones, but those pickups sounded like fire breathers to me, even the neck pickup wasn't all that muddy on distortion. I can tell why this one has seen a good amount of use
My ‘83 Standard was the best sounding LP I ever owned. If you could put Jimmy Page in a guitar, that was it. Your spotlight (same pickups and year) sound exactly like it. Hollow, woody, articulate….very special sound on that one. I love it!
do you know those small x ray machine not very expensive , i think cheaper than les paul standard , but quite small ,so cant scan whole body ,i think good enough for the job you need.
I really like this one. I really dig the top, and for the age it’s in pretty good condition. If only I had the spare cash :D I agree with you about the bridge pickup - not my cup of tea, but the neck sings out to me.
I'm into retro games and the auction photo made me laugh, there is a company that started to "grade" video games recently, but it's owned by the son of the dude who did the giant coin grading scam of the 80s, and he's also involved in the company with his son. It's done to retro games what happened to guitars. Stuff I could get for cheap 10 years ago, now goes for 10s of thousands. WATA games is the company. A boxed copy of Super Mario going for nearly a million, hell, least with a 50k Gibson from the 50s it was handbuilt, this is more like the pricing of CnC made guitars for 50k and such.
Yeah man, one may even care to look into. . . . . . . . . . . . The world of, Japanese "LP Style" guitars. I have a 78 Greco EG500 & it's awesome! Greco, Tokai, Burny, Edwards, they're all VERY cool! & of course I have & have owned quite a few Gibsons.
I have an ‘82 LP Custom with Tim Shaw PAFs. Great sound, really nice guitar. ‘That’s not considered a hip vintage but I don’t care. It plays well and sounds great!
That's a beautiful guitar. I was gifted a les paul custom white from 89. Well it's a Epiphone, not a gibson. It does have a gibson truss rod cover😂 which is kind of strange. It plays well and I'm grateful to have it. This my first time seeing your content and really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.
how rich is this guy.. to be able to sell a bunch of guitars to buy his house then buy a whole collection back is crazy!! congrats trog, you have every guitarists life you can buy/play any guitar you wish and if you dont like it you can sell it!
That was a great sounding guitar, there's 2007 Custom Shop Spotlight Special on ebay UK at the mo at £12k....ouch, not an original 83/84 but posting states 1 of 50 so must have been a small reissue run.

Would love to see a quick before and after cleaning and polishing. Good way to showcase how you are adding value to what you pass on to others
Have you done a video on how and what you use to polish up your guitars. I have a 2003 Supreme that could use a little more TLC.
Can we all agree that Tim Shaw neck paf's kick ass? Not usually the biggest fan of his bridge pups but this one sounded fantastic, the best sounding guitar I've heard our boy play in a good while.
For a 40 year old guitar I'd say it's in pretty damn good shape 🤘🤘 sounds good too
Trogly has really been practicing ! Sounds excellent man!
17:44 Everyone has to take a drink! Trogly said he likes the neck pickup!!
Yeap, definitely I preffer the antique natural look vs the burst one.

Killer tone,the zeppelin sounded killer.

It's nice that this guitar got to "Ramble On" for a bit in your hands. LOL Nice job, really good looking after the clean up.
Agreed! 👍

diggin the brown and cream binding
That tone is incredible.

I’d be interested in what a good price for a guitar like this is worth?
How did they get the multicolor fret-nibs? Is that just meticulously done frets with equal attention to doing the binding...or is it VouDou?
Also: I'd love to see a video of doing a deep clean on a guitar like this-even if it is only one you recommend by someone else.
Binding is just plastic that comes in a strip.

so because double ply binding, then the fret lips slightly bigger than normal single ply cream binding one..?

I used to have a 73(approx) Gibson SG with a 3 piece neck. It was like a tree trunk.
that's a really nice finish, i'm an acoustics sorta guy but i think that natural finish headstock is great, they ought to do that more often. that neck looks gorgeous after it was cleaned.
What is the purpose of using the black light? What does it show?

this guitar actually sounds good as hell
great video, very thorough examination; the inlays really dance!!
Always nice to see Austin get another spotlight

What riff is that from right when he goes into overdrive the first time for the demo at the end
It's from a zepplin song
Oh it's ramble on!

Hey Trogly, you could do an episode showing all your cleaning and polish process. Your work is flawless, the guitars really shine. Wonderfull!!!
The matching headstock really takes this axe to another level! Sounds great and I'd definitley ROCK this axe!
I think the spotlight specials are very cool too. Really liked this one.
That sounds amazing!
What a gorgeous guitar
