    Dan, first I'll say I've been subscribed all season, and love the vids and channel. Keep up the good work! I bought a Toro mx4250 zero turn this spring to do my acre here at home. Your "Gravely ztx42 20 hour review" got me hooked on your channel, very informative. In march 2015 I had a stroke, and was paralyzed completely on the right side. spent a month in the hospital, therapy, all that good stuff, and thank God I feel 100% better now, went from barely being able to talk, and in a wheelchair, to walking, biking, mowing lol. So I was a truck driver, and the law says you have to wait 1 year for medical recertification after a stroke. I waited, and went back last March to get recertified. Everything went fine, and I got recertified,and went back to trucking. Then in July, I got a better job offer, working for Waste Management, and went back to do a pre-employment physical, and had the doctor tell me he was revoking my current certification. So I lost my current job, and the new job on the same day. I've applied twice for social security disability, even went to a lawyer, but I was rejected both times. I said all that to say all this, your work ethic has really inspired me, and next spring I'm going to start my own lawn care company here in Minnesota(fine fescue hell lol). I nearly bought your exact model Gravely, but the dealer was surly, and the Toro dealer was much more genial and willing to deal. Plus Toro is headquartered here in MN. But I'm still envious of your three bladed Gravely. I did not know that it was triple bladed when I was looking at it, or I might have choose it. Anyway, I just wanted to reach out, sorry for the wall of text. For what it's worth, you're the most realistic lawn guy on youtube. Thanks for the videos!

    That was one incredible mulching job. After an intense mulching like that, I'd follow up with a 36-3-7 Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potash fert treatment, with a 'LOT' of watering to work everything deep down into the soil. Bermuda, Bermuda Hybrids like Tiff and Zoysa love Nitrogen, it gives it that dark green shade.

    • @DansVlog
      @DansVlog  5 років тому

      It’s actually too much mulching but this was just a one time demonstration of how the cross blades can work as I continue to intentionally build up more and more clippings to mulch. This is absolutely not the right way to do a yard, it’s just a demo to show the blades but I do appreciate your comment very much.

      Same here, since the mid 90's. I may have tried stacking blades, but switched early on to cutting a section out of the center of one blade and having them TIG welded together at a shop. They work great, really good for mulching.

    Thanks Dan good video and shows what using the X-blade setup can do......pine needles are tough to mulch but it looks like that setup did the job......some people seem to forget the invaluable nutrition does for the soil and grass the bio breakdown is essential for the eco system and no doubt in the long run this helps preserve your need to mow it again....why deny the soil these nutrients

  • @NitroGuyJH
    @NitroGuyJH 6 років тому

    I repowered an older 60 inch gravely with a Kawasaki FX921V 31 hp carbureted engine that would throw grass almost twice as far with only 3 blades. The model you have has a different underside vacuum pressure for the deck than most mowers making it capable of more. Nice mower just don’t favor the Kohler 6 & 7000 series engines. Identical to the predecessor “courage” (single and twin cylinders) models that always cracked the block behind the starter due to excessive vibration and the 4 crankcase bolts loosening. Although they sport the new metal rocker covers and revised crank and camshaft profiles with an aesthetically pleasing air cover 👍🏻

      Your right it is a great way to show how cross blades work. I am going to try it on a few properties and see what I think. Now no matter what pine needles don't mulch very well in a situation like this I would bag for sure and avoid going over it 1k times and grinding it back into the lawn ( just my opinion) but it's a great way to mulch leaves

      Thank you. Not just tall but so full of pine needles. Also, I am cutting with the deck all the way up.

    A designed rear discharge would be nice 70per.of the mowed row would land on the cut grass behind. It would help cutting and moving the cut grass 3or4 times. Could it be done.

    Like others, I got hooked into the *whole video*. Here's why:
    1) Down-to-earth real guy. Somebody you could see havin' a beer with.
    2) Taught me something new (had never seen cross blading before)
    3) Cool equipment (I just bought a Gravely HD52 myself last Friday)
    4) Satisfying job to watch get *completed*--mesmerizing pattern & that thing SHREDS (literally)
    5) Long continuous shots--not the frantic cut/cut/cut/cut of so many videos
    6) Just the sounds of the beast! Guys. love. motors! NO CHEEZY/ANNOYING MUSIC!
    From Fri to today (Mon) I put my first 5 hrs on the mower (first mower of any kind I've ever owned in my life) through some gnarly, heavy, wet growth --but NOW I know how I ought to shred the rest of the overgrown acreage for the first cut of the year!
    Thank You, Dan!

    I've done the x blades on walkbehind just never a zero. since you're adding that extra 1/4" or so with the extra blade, do you figure that in when you set your cutting height or does it not really make that much of a difference.

    • @DansVlog
      @DansVlog  7 років тому +3

      I raise my deck 1/2 inch due to these blades having a more aggressive drop. But I don't raise it anymore than that for x blading. Not really doing this very much and will only do it where I want to rip thru some nasty crap.

      I gotcha. Yea I figured you'd have to adjust a little. It surely does the job tho. Another great video brother.

      CountrysideLawnNY you just answered the question for yourself lol. Any professional on good turf can see and tell 1/4 differences, especially when sun hits just right. Just go up a 1\4 and it's no bigge!

    Sadly, this is what most of the lawns I mow are like, with the addition of rocks, shale, dirt patches, ruts, roots, branches, dog poop, and other Oklahoma fun. It's common for me to end up brown covered in dust and dirt. And, "Oh I just want it done about every 3 weeks." SMH The only one without debris and all the BS is my own. I'm debating on planting trees lol. I hate not having shade but it sure it nice not dealing with leaves and debris. IT WILL NOT BE PINES!
    Thank you for showing the cross blade technique. I'll have to try it on my BadBoy Outlaw.

      I have 1/3 acre and a Snapper tractor 38 inch mulching deck. I had 3 big pine trees., a big oak tree, several big hardwood trees, and a big magnolia tree. I spent more of my time mulching and raking leaves and pine straw than cutting grass . Also I visited the doctor every 2 or 3 weeks to get medicine for sinus infections. I was covered in dust when finished. That little 24 year old Snapper almost got killed from all that work but it's life has been saved. Over the years I had all the trees cut down except for one little dogwood. My yard is now fully covered in grass and dust is not an issue at all. No sinus infections. It was no fun cutting my grass and seeing the yard turn brown covered in pine straw and leaves 2 days later. Cutting down those trees was the best $3000 I ever spent. My neighbors appreciate that big oak being gone and no more leaves from it in their yards too.

    You make it all look like a piece of cake. The final cut looks great. If I'd never seen the lawn before you cut it, I would have never known there was a problem. While some suggest bagging would have been quicker/easier/cheaper, I like the idea of mulching the nutrients back into the soil. It's more natural, and no carting it away. Plus the whole point of the video was to demonstrate using cross blades in a difficult scenario. You seem very conscientious with attention to detail regards your work. If I had a lawn, which I don't (live in a high rise), I would be delighted to have you mow my lawn! Living in Australia 🇦🇺 might also be a deal breaker lol.

    At the 3:54 minute mark you mention edging and trimming first. When I watched other lawn maintenance videos I never could understand why they didn't that first. I was in the business for about 5 years; always edged and trimmed first as it was cleaner when you got done. Amazed at the 6 blade configuration.

    • @robk9898
      @robk9898 6 років тому +3

      When you trim first your often trimming way more then u have to to make up for those tight spots... when your doing alot of lawns in a day that extra trimming adds up.. usually trim after so can see how much actually had to be trimmed depending on how good guy on mower is meaning how close he gets

    • @WarofClans
      @WarofClans 5 років тому

      Also when you edge first the dirt sticks to the concrete if u run it over also trimming first u end up over weed eating
