Lip Trills: Are YOU doing them RIGHT? | Lip Bubbles Singing |

- Learn to Lip Trill. Many singers use Lip Bubbles...and many singers are doing them incorrectly. Dr Dan shows us how to do a lip bubble RIGHT! Get the most out of your lip bubbles - they're a great vocal exercise.
0:25 What are Lip Bubbles
Lip bubbles, or lip trills as they are sometimes called, are from the semi-occluded vocal tract activities family, and they have been around for ages.
1:19 The Primary Sound
The aim in any lip bubble is to ensure that the tone is the primary sound.
2:30 Learning to Lip Bubble
Before I work on lip bubbles with my private students, I always address two key topics first: tension management and breath management. A good lip bubble has an easily distinguishable tone with a free and agile larynx that is capable of moving through each of the vocal registers with ease.
3:34 Two More Things
Before you go off and start working on your lip bubbles there are two more things you need to be conscious of in order to get the most out of the activity.

Thank you very much. I've always wondered if I do it right and I haven't seen or heard anyone else explaining it like this. Your videos are awesome!
Really appreciate the considerate advice!!!!
Omg the finger support helps. Most other teachers were telling me to push up and/or down, and it wasn't working.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video LazySkull. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for this Dr Dan.
Realise this vid is two years old already but I'm brand new to lip trills. You made them look so easy...that was epic!
I simply could not do that properly at first and thought ..I'll never get this. Then I sought out and specifically did the breathing management exercises on the CD (as you said you do this with students months before learning bubbles.)
So after that and much practice( basically everywhere I went..within reason) I got the bubbles happening! It actually feels and sounds like it should, and with more control. 😊
Thanks again!
bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
The 2nd tip regarding holding the bubble really helped me identify a problem area. Thanks!
Thanks, Dr. Dan! I think for now I’ve got too much tension in my neck and/or shoulders to do lip bubbles correctly. I have been feeling tension in my vocal folds during/after doing them, so until I get the tension relaxed, no more lip bubbles as part of my warmup regime!
Thank you, thank you!!! Looking forward to more!
Welcome to Voice Essentials, Nan.
Thank you so much! I haven't come here to check if i do it right. Because i couldn't do it, with your finger technique i finally got it. Now, i am checking if i do it right)) Thanks again)
not sure if anyone cares but if you're bored like me atm then you can stream all the latest series on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my brother lately =)
@Titus Arthur yup, been using instaflixxer for months myself :D
@Titus Arthur definitely, I have been watching on InstaFlixxer for months myself :D
@Titus Arthur Yup, been watching on instaflixxer for since december myself :)
This what i have learnt first, some weeks ago with my dear friend and vocal coach american, Monique B Thomas. I am not a singer, but i love singing.
Thanks!
This is amazing! I couldn't do a lip bubble properly before but I totally learned it now. Thank you so much for this extremely helpful video.
Thank you Dr. Dan!
You're welcome Quint Hunnicutt. Thanks for watching.
OMG finally I got it.. atleast started doing it
Wow you have a good air flow!
SUPER helpful, Dr. Dan! Appreciated😇
Glad it was helpful!
thank you for your awesome video...yeah! finally i can do it although just once😂
This video is a very simple and accurate method, so I can't wait for my growth. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi everyone.
Im finding this lip bobbles very helpful. Thanks alot.
Thanks for this nice tutorial. Though I have done nearly 8 audio albums, I have never done any vocal exercises. I am glad that I have now come to value the importance for one to do warm ups of the music apparatus we have to get higher performances. Till today, I had not heard of lip rolls and lip bubbles. I hope to pay more attention to this and other exercises before recording my songs.
Hi, garuda somanna. You may find my online singing course helpful - drdan.co/onlinesinginglessons. Feel free to check it out sometime. The first module is free to preview!
THANK YOU Dr Dan! 8 months of Sls training* and never understood why we were doing these (other than to warm up) and if I was doing them correctly. Ahhhhhhhhhh what a relief to finally know! Thank you. *its on me for not asking or YouTubing sooner. 🤪😎🎤
Happy to help!
Thank you so much for this advice..been doing these for a while now before a gig , and they really help..I think I may have been doing them correctly..hopefully..lol...
***** ((*_*)) ..thank you ~
I'm a singer, entertainer and I've never heard of this before. I've tried to learn from your instruction but can't seem to get the hang of it. I've had vocal training for most of my life. My first teacher was Marni Nixon, and Ron Dam but neither taught me this. I have a 4 1/2 octave range, so I should be able to master this, I hope, lol. I'll continue to watch and mimic you. How important is this, and why am I having trouble? I do have very full lips, and maybe I need to exercise them more, idk?
I had learned of "lip rolls"(same thing) and tried it. It was always hard for me to do, and of course I had no way to know there even was a wrong way. I had trouble making it last before I had even used much breath, the lips just wouldn't keep moving, so I tried "harder". Now I realise I was pushing too hard. It had made me feel like I was playing tonsil hockey, and not in a good way. Thankyou for a much more clarifying video than I had yet found. I do have a question about whether the "B" trill (liproll) is superior or much different in benefit to the "D" trill (tongue version)? I do find the D trill easier, and wondered if that would defeat the purpose.
Dr. Dan when i listen to you, i just noticed how my very expansive teachers used to be low educated and terrible.
I managed to do the exact sound you get on a long note but only once and with fingers on cheeks. I can not repeat it anymore. How do I do this?
How does one stop the involuntary expelling of air? Is it just practice?
at the start of this video i could only do a lip bubble for like, half a second. by the end i figured it out. :)
How to do lip trills on the right pitch? On a major scale for example I always mess up the notes
What if you CAN'T DO THE BASIC "LIP BUBBLE"! I can't get my lips to do that! I've tried for years!
Mannette Antill, the following video may prove helpful - ua-cam.com/video/aXwKCxVq4vY/v-deo.html
Mannette Antill I have a hard time with the lip bubble. My vocal coach had me use a straw and I found that to be so much easier to go through scales.
Same here
I can't either but as i practice i can now
Same here!! I can’t do the lip trill at all! I’ll go and check the link he linked there hoping I get it finally 😭
Can this done after meal
I've been visiting a speech therapist for two years and a half (after a hard desease which affected my voice) and I think she never explained lip bubbles as good - and tersely - as you did. Thank you very much for sharing those tips! I was wondering, is it normal to experience some hoarseness after completing these exercises? It was never my case, but I heard that some people have that problem and it would be nice to know the reason (laryngeal tension, maybe?). Again, thanks for the video!
+Dr Dan's Voice Essentials, that's a great answer and it's good to know why it happens! Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us, Dan.
HAHAHAHAH IT KILLED ME WHEN YOU HELD THE NOTE
your tips have given me a vocal breakthrough in one day after years of being stuck. Thank you!!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video Chrystal Cummings. Thanks for watching.
H Dr Dani, If we are involuntarily expelling air at the very end of the lip trill, how do we fix this and do a more efficient trill? thanks

Will it make voice harsh?
DrDan , I want to ask something about the lip bubbles . Is your larynx supposed to rise as you go higher with the lip bubbles? I can't seem to stop mine from rising regardless of what I do. Even if its in my comfortable range .
Lil Winter, the following video may prove helpful - ua-cam.com/video/uiPVjecFpmw/v-deo.html
can i know benefits of doing them? as I do them 15 mins everyday
I do them 15 mins daily because I wanna succeed, but please tell me benefits of it
I can do it but only my lower lip is vibrating. Upper lip stays the same. And the corners of my mouth going downwards. Any solution ?.
I get coughing while doing bubble trill. What should I do?
Is it okay to push a bit to get the tone once you're really high up? Otherwise it's just air or very little tone
It's all about the balance. You may need 'slightly' more breath pressure higher up...but not much more.
I can’t make my lips trill unless I blow really hard otherwise it just sounds like an exhausted sigh ;-;
Like I’ve watched video after video on lip trills and I still don’t know what I’m doing wrong
Could it just be the way my lips are shaped??
Hi Dan I tried doing the lip bubble I can make the sound without engaging my lips. When engaging my lips I struggle to make the sound without letting a lot of air or the sound. Is there any exercise I can do to rectify this. Cheers

I recently had what I hope is my last vocal cord surgery (thyroplasty+ artyenoid adduction) for left vocal cord paralysis ( caused by an injury during a thyroidectomy 2018) I mentioned to my doctor how my neck tightens a little from time to time. He recommend lip and vocal trills (surgery was 1-21-21). Is this video a good place for me to start or do you recommend a different one?
I would recommend speech therapy first before you do any singing.
@@DrDanRobinson thank you!
@@DrDanRobinson thank you kindly!
Do you do this with your tongue too or just with the lips?
Yes, you can do this as a tongue trill also.
hello dr, I have a doubt about the lips, is it true that in singing you should feel exactly the same exercise placement? I happen to lose the sensation and sometimes it's hard to keep it
Laura, the 'placement' will move around depending on the vowel you are singing, and where in the range you are singing it. This being said, I think it is helpful to, for the most part, aim to maintain a forward sense of placement...generally speaking.
Is the lower lip supposed to move a little as well? Or only your upper lip?
Dr Dan's Voice Essentials Thank you for answering! I really like your channel, keep it going. 😄
I can't do lip bubbles. Is it essential or can i do some alternative exercises?
I encourage you to continue working on them. But don't get discouraged if you can't make them work.
I believe I've doing the exercise right but when I try to go between registers, my voice breaks instead of transitioning smoothly. Am I doing something wrong, or does it just take time for the break to smooth over?
Yes, that's right, so would it be beneficial to try register transitions this way at all until I'm 18?
Do you have any exercises for head voice/falsetto transitions?
But wait, when doing these "bubbles" where am I uhh humming from, my head, chest, nose or......? Also, Do you have a video with that "figure" where and how everything is interacting (while singing) ie, diaphragm+larynx+vocal folds... something like that??? I find it helpful. Great videos👍🏽

Dr Dan's Voice Essentials Thank you sooo much😁
I can hear my break as I lip roll from chest to head and it's especially pronounced going down head to chest. What might be causing that or will that go away with practice?

I run out of air really fast when I do these...I can't make it all the way and down an octave without running out of air so I get dizzy by taking in so much air. Does this improve with practice?

Just wanted to say that I have been doing lip bubbles for years but can never get the correct look on my lips, usually I see everyone doing lip bubbles and their lips flutter a certain way but mine never moves quite like everyone elses who does the bubbles correctly. Secondly what kind of a sound am I going for? Brr?
Try bbb not brrr and pout your lips while doing it..
Hey @Dr Dan
#DrDan
I have too much lip in the bubbles but I am following your tips. I am relaxing my neck and my shoulders and I’m doing the breath tension exercise.
I have no clue what is causing this for me.
Can Dr Dan or anyone on UA-cam help me? Does anyone have a few tips?

How do you correct someone who is not doing it correctly, or can't do them at all?
yes of course. I get them working on zzzz, but this can be problematic too.
How is it possible to do it on an extended note for that long? I can only get past 8 seconds...any tips please?

How come my tongue slightly sticks out when I do a lip bubble?from your demo I don't see yours sticking
During a lip bubble exercise, it's not uncommon for some individuals to have their tongue slightly sticking out between their lips. The tongue's position during this exercise can vary depending on the individual's anatomy, habits, or personal preference. As long as the exercise produces the desired effect of relaxed lips and a free, unstrained vocal production, sticking your tongue slightly out should not be a concern.
However, if you find that the tongue's position is causing discomfort or negatively affecting the exercise, try adjusting your technique. You can experiment with gently pulling your tongue back, keeping it behind the lower teeth, or even lightly touching the roof of your mouth. The goal is to find a comfortable position that allows you to perform the lip bubble exercise effectively and without strain.
Remember, every person's anatomy and habits are different, so finding what works best for you is essential. Working with a vocal coach can also provide personalised guidance and help you refine your technique for optimal results.
I do lip rolls like I'm riding a bike is it wrong
Oh my goodness. I just sound like I'm breaking wind. lol
My tongue is always in between my lower and upper teeth, is this ok?... Where should the tongue be placed when doing this?
Oi Nomas, the following video may prove helpful - ua-cam.com/video/hwk3It813z8/v-deo.html
It should be resting at the floor of your mouth
What if you go to do it and it immediately stops after 1 second? Or stops when you do lower notes

@@DrDanRobinson Thanks
What’s the vowel doing lip bubble? “Uh?” Or “ “eh?”
When i do uh with lip bubbles something is wrong it feels uncomfortable?
Try to make it more of a hum than a vowel.
hi I have a song song on youtube call who that man I wontto know if iam singing with good breath support in this song
You used the word "inefficient" in your description but the printed word on reads "efficient". That might confuse people....just a typo but I suggest fixing that. Circa 4'44".
***** hello, I am referring to the text on the screen below the video that accompanies your spoken words. When you sway "inefficient" the text reads "efficient". You seem to clearly be pronouncing the word "inefficient".
What is the point of the lip bubbles? I am confused?
Do you know?
well i was doing them wrong for too long lol
Lip trills tickle ;-;
LOL. Yeah, they do!
cant do that
the framerate matches your lips so uncomfortably well LOL
Haha...I know right!
The v d o starts at 1:28
Mine stops involuntary
Hi Dr. Dan, Great video. I have one question - you are using the word "adduction" to talk about how the vocal cords come together. I've heard other voice teachers call that "approximation." Do you see a difference between the two words in this context?
Keep up the good work! - Barbara J Simon - www.bjsimon.com
Where should my tongue be?
