  • Have you ever wondered why Harley Davidsons are called 'Hogs'? In today's episode, we look into the history of the man believed to be responsible for that nickname and who set a raft of motorcycle racing records in the early days of the sport, Ray Weishaar. From his humble beginnings as a cable splicer for Bell Telephones, Ray Weishaar would go on to become a big part of Harley Davidson's famous Wrecking Crew race team after being signed up to race for them in 1916.

    Thank you for another peek into the past of bikes and riding. Headed out in a bit to air out the old Triumph. I'll be thinking of Ray as I ride.

    New viewer and subscriber here from across the pond in the tiny state of Rhode Island. I've always had a love and passion for motorcycles since I was a very young boy. I been riding bikes since I was 9 on dirt then and on street since 18 and still ride on my stage 1 Harley Davidson Iron 883 at the age of 52. I absolutely love your UA-cam channel. I love the motorcycle history. Thank you for all of your hard work that you put into your videos. I'm looking forward to future videos.

    I love your windows into history of the motorcycling. When I was a kid hungered for anything bike. I would check out all the books in the public library on bikes because I couldn't afford magazines. I would think a brief history on Mike the bike Hailwood could be interesting.

      Hi Atle, thank you very much for your comments they are very kind and much appreciated! Healthwise.. I have no complaints really ..the manifestation of my condition is much like most others who've had the same treatment, always tired, always feeling like someone has beaten you with sticks all night haha ..my cardio is terrible, I still don't make saliva and can't taste many foods .. my voice has dropped an octave ...meh ...like I say no complaints there's a lot worse than me out there. I'm still here doing what I enjoy and glad that others enjoy the results of that! Each day as it comes, and as you say, I'm doing good! ..Be well and stay safe ..Paul

    Very enjoyable video. I have the same name, Lawrence Weishaar. I raced and rallied cars, both nationally and internationally, in the: 60s and '70s. Maybe I share some racing genes with Ray.

    Thank you for another great one! I like your well researched storytelling combined with -for me- undiscovered photographs and newspaper articles.
    As you asked to give names of interesting personalities from this epoch, you are probably able to get more informations about a special bord track racer of the time, and yes, it is a female:
    Margret Nagengast.

    I know this story, that's where the term HOG came from. Back when men were men and a machine was a machine. Legendary racer.

    Ray is a cousin. Mother’s side. Weishaar’s (we pronounce it “Wise-er”) were/are fairly prominent in North East Kansas. Old school farmers and community folk. I believe my Grandfather is a first cousin, but not confirmed. We all have a similar look.
    I also believe his OG bike is in Oregon, or it was when I was told a few years ago. Once mine is out of the shop, it will be my destination.

    • @waynewalters426
      @waynewalters426 2 роки тому

      That makes sense. I think it's German for white hair (Weiss=white, and haar=hair). It would be pronounced pretty close to "Wise-er' that way too. In German it would be pronounced more like "Vice-Har" though. Thanks for sharing Brad

      Wonder if there is a connection to the Wisconsin Weishaar's? My boys are into bikes as well.. lol.. maybe it is genetic as now Justin has my 3 year old granddaughter on her own dirt bike!

      Hi Robert, thank you the question haha ..ah where to begin ..much has been going on and the poor old Benly is still here waiting patiently for attention .. so the answer to your question is "no progress" .. if you saw the ep on the Kwaker 250 I am doing a very basic get it running makeover, doing fork seals at the mo just to get it running under it's own steam then who knows where it might go from there ..There is the Honds 360T clutch to sort and of course what's to become of the Suzuki step through! ..and on and on!

    Isn't it funny how history turns and coalesces around such seemingly insignificant actions as a man's choice of pets. Harley will forever more be known as "hogs," simply because a little piglet caught a man's eye.............

    I love it when Americans call events "International something" or "World Cup" or that sort of thing when these are more or less national events. The "Worlds best somebody" who never competed outside the USA or in some cases not even outside the state or city ;-)
