  • I've enhanced the 1972 Week 12 Monday Night Football game between the Rams and 49ers. I upscaled, denoised, and sharpened the picture with Topaz, and also doubled the framerate. I used Resolve to perform a contrast adjustment and to give a major boost to the color. I haven't checked, but it looks like most of the game is present. There appear to be edited huddles at certain points however and I'm assuming some plays are probably missing.

And you can pretty much take it to the bank that if anyone is going to have a definitive version to post, it's going to be Dave. In fact, if I DID have a unique version of something, I'd give it to Dave to fix up first anyway. There's too much garbage being posted on YT to begin with, so I might as well give it to the one guy who can take something so-so and turn it into something amazing.

'72 was the last flicker of the John Brodie era (and the dynasty that never was) in San Fran. The 49ers were so close to being THE team in the NFL at the start of the 70's. They just always found a way to come up a buck short against Dallas. For any who were around for this era, Dwight Clark's "The Catch" was that much sweeter because it came at the Cowboys' expense. '72 was Spurrier's one good season. Hard to believe he's 78 now. And John Brodie is now 88, but still hanging in there.

Videotape from the Vikings-Redskins 72 Monday night game was used in the intro for MNF in 1973 and 1974 (although in highly stylized graphics) - so maybe the game tape survived. There is a broadcast clip on UA-cam of Dick Butkus making an interception in the Vikings-Bears 1972 Monday night game, so also a better possibility that more exists. It seems there is a decent possibility that the 1973 Vikings-Falcons game tape exists. The broadcast opening including the national anthem is on UA-cam, and there is a broadcast clip of of Bob Lee throwing a TD later in the game in the Monday Night Football 20th anniversary special.

No doubt! they have delayed any throwback uniform for years now where other teams do it like the Titans even brought back the houston oilers uniforms. why won't the rams bring these back at least for a game or two? I think it is because they know people don't like their current uniforms and they will demand the old ones back. It would be having to admit their mistake. I remember as a 14 year old kid just being appalled that they went away from the blue and whites but the 70s uniforms were great also

@@fredgarv79 I believe there are many fans demanding the old ones back. Even the former great Ram, Eric Dickerson! What's puzzling to me is why they ever thought to switch out the uniforms in the first place? It would be like the Cowboys, Packers, Steelers and Raiders switching out their classic uniforms for something that is so awful! The iconic Rams uniforms were at an equal level as those teams uniforms. Hopefully it's just a marketing "money grab" and they'll go back to what the fans truly want...The Rams old uniforms back!!

I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time, and with the blackout rules they had back then, this is the first time I've gotten to view an MNF NFL game from Candlestick Park of that era.
In the MNF game between the 49ers and Steelers at Candlestick in 1978, I got the opportunity to get down to the field of play after the game, and was astounded on the *HARDNESS* the playing surface was, as it was literally a thin carpet on concrete.

    • @WaltGekko
      @WaltGekko 7 місяців тому +3

That was one reason Candlestick went back to grass after the 1978 season, mainly to try to help OJ Simpson's knees (Simpson would retire after the 1979 season) though it did show how grass fields were very poorly maintained until Prescription Athletic Turf came into use in the late 1980s with the field at Candlestick often a mud bowl for late-season and playoff games played in or after a big rain. Also helped the baseball Giants a lot.

Another great game blacked out in the Bay Area due to local television rules of the era. Of course, I missed the live broadcast. A lot of times, we'd drive up to Chico to watch the 49ers on TV - but there was no ABC affiliate in Chico then and Redding was too far to go on a Monday Night.

Lifelong 49ers fan, but way too young to have watched Schreiber, Kwalick, Washington, et al, play. Although disappointed by the outcome, I LOVED watching this vintage 49er team in action! Schreiber and Washington (Both Vic and Gene) certainly had some moves, and Kwalick reminded me a bit of George Kittle- in a good way. Spurrier, uh, well, he was a great college coach. It certainly has a very different feel than today's game. The guys in the backfield seemed to be a much bigger part of the passing game. Also it seems like today's wide receivers are more talented, for one, as far as making contested catches in traffic. Plus, no block in the back calls on kick returns (or false starts called?) Anyway, thanks for the upload! This was fun!

Hi Dave been loving your channel & all of the great content you’ve been putting out recently. It is much appreciated
I realize that your cutoff date is 1984 but I have collected every Niner game(except 2) from that magical ‘81-98 era…plus many others from the Jeff Garcia era…on DVD
So if there’s anything I can do to assist you in putting out even more 49ers content please let me know

Thanks Craig :) My cutoff is 1984, but I lived in the Bay Area and got into football at age 11 in 1983. I only ever followed the Niners, pretty much all the way up to when Steve Young (my favorite player ever) retired in 1999. I did follow them very sporadically for the 15 years after that until I stopped watching the NFL completely in 2014. Anyways, I would probably make an exception for Niner games up through 1994. I've only been able to get a few early 80's games so far, so I might be interested in your offer. If you'd like to email me at davevolsky@gmail.com we could talk further :)

The resources for ABC-TV Sports may have been stretched a bit thin, as well as the media space for TV production being cramp at Candlestick Park; as you may note the three guys were not shown abreast, but individually, dressed for cool weather. I had heard the announcer's booth space was not heated, that portable space heaters had to be brought in.
Candlestick Park was a baseball park that was made into a makeshift football stadium.

    Dear Santa,
I've not been a model citizen this year, but's not a change from prior years. Nonetheless, I am asking you to deliver the following to my good friend and video restorer extraordinaire, Dave Volsky:
-- Any additional Chiefs games from 1969-1971 (except the Dolphins playoff game in '71, which still makes me cry as I refuse to accept it)
-- Additional Redskins games from 1982-83
-- vintage MNF broadcasts where Dave can edit out any comments by Howard Cosell
I'm not asking for much, Santa. Dave's treasure trove is without equal, and I'm grateful to him for his patient, excellent work. I'm just asking for a little bit more. I will help fund excavations of the sites of old Municipal Stadium in KC and RFK Stadium.
I remain, humbly and desperately yours,

The difference in the 49ers execution when Brodie started compared to Spurrier was huge. Brodie was aging and oft-injured in his last few years but when he came in he lifted their performance level significantly. Brodie had a deft touch with longer passes while Spurrier struggled.
Spurrier was the supposed heir apparent, the Heisman winner out of Florida who would continue the success Brodie started and lead the Niners well into the 1970’s. Obviously things worked out differently. He left after ‘75 and the Niners struggled until Bill Walsh and Joe Montana arrived in 1979.
The USFL gave Steve a chance to shine as a play caller and he went on to achieve a Hall of Fame coaching carrier at his Alma mater.

I just like how they played the game back then. Players played hard but no jaw jacking and celebrating after every broken up pass like today. People say the excessive celebration and acting out adds to the game, but I don't agree. I think less is more. And the players seemed more like regular people back then, not overgrown kids like in today's game- they were men.

One almost forgets, in a 2023 NFL world where SF’s Brock Purdy and his receivers can complete 80% of their pass plays on a regular basis, that passes were once a risky move, and dropping or missing them was the norm.
All warm nostalgia aside, there’s no question how much higher the sheer skill level is now, and it is amazing to watch.

Notice how then-Rams head coach Tommy Prothro was smoking a ton on the sidelines. That would never be allowed today.
The Rams won this game to get the Rams to 6-5-1 but they would lose their final two games and Prothro was fired at the end of the 1972 season, replaced by Chuck Knox who would take the Rams to a 12-2 mark in 1973. Prothro then became the Chargers head coach in 1974 and was their head coach when they faced the Giants at Shea Stadium in New York on Saturday, November 1, 1975 in the last NFL game to not be televised even though it was a sellout as the Giants likely did not want the game televised opposite high school and college football while the Chargers likely did not want to send a broadcast crew to New York for a 10:00 AM local time start on a Saturday. Prothro would be fired by the Chargers four games into the 1978 season with a 1-3 record where he would be replaced by Don Coryell, who also started 1-3 before the Chargers won seven of eight in the back end of the 1978 season to finish 9-7.
