he sings the last bit: "we were in love, palisades, i can wait. I can't explain the state that I'm in, the state of my heart, he was my best friend..he ran away" with so much feeling you can tell that "buddy" stii haunts him a little to this day. there's still love for him in his heart
As much as I love the studio version, this is absolutely the most beautiful rendition of this song that exists - the key being different, the stumbling of the vocals, the layers of guitars, it lends such a genuine quality to it. I'm so glad you thought to record this - it wouldn't be right for this to exist without being appreciated
@@elijahaguirre3268 I think it's quoted on the Genius Lyrics page of this song. I believe it's mentioned somewhere in this Salon Magazine interview: www.salon.com/2017/06/03/sufjan-stevens-bryce-dessner-nico-muhly-planetarium/ If you can't find it, here's the quote from the Genius Lyrics annotation: In a 2017 interview with Salon, he described it as being “an awakening,” and explained that it happened when he was in high school, around the age of 16.
him talking about the song is half the fun! i can listen to this song literally anytime i want, but hearing him describe it is the part that makes concert tapes magical.

I think its about Jesus
@@perrolibre196 it is absolutely about a childhood friend he was in love with, and how he was made to feel ashamed of his queerness by the church
Sufjan: "my swimming buddy"
"my crafts buddy"
Also Sufjan: "touching his back with my hand i kisses him"
"we were in love, we were in love"
But is it about god though ;) ??
And they were roommates.
Straight dudes can love other straight dudes no homo
I know for certain I would just start bawling if I saw him play this song live.
he really leans into the waltz of the song in a way he doesn't on the original
I so often hate people who bust their phone out at shows.
But thank you so much for recording and sharing this.
Yes those people are annoying. That's why I never use a phone nor a lit screen.
“And it sounded like a unicorn”
if there's a person who knows how a unicorn sound, that would be sufjan

Life is all memory
shoutout to 1986 from 2024 ❤
So ethereally beautiful , so creatively imaginative, so universally appealing, so overwhelmingly invigorating ...... so SUFJAN STEVENS ❤
He said this song was from 1986 and he was born on 1975. So maybe this story happened when he was 11??
That's what I understood!
Apparently in an interview he said he was 16, and described the potential Intimacy as "An Awakening".
Ellis Quinn do you know what interview in particular this was? :)

I think he was joking about the 1986 quip, "this song is from 1986," as in he hasn't played it in years
Need to hear this live, this could heal me‼️

it’s 2018?
I love this man with my whole heart but you can tell he can’t reach the notes like he used to
He's playing it in a higher key than on the album as well.
‘with my whole heart’ so you’re a psychic hm?
Voice continues to deepen with age, natural progression
Honestly, Sufjan Stevens has never been a stellar vocalist in my opinion, but he doesn’t do a bad job here at all.
He never could reach the higher notes, but we love him anyway.
