Thank you for another informative video. To the person who asked about repelling squirrels: I sprinkle chili powder lightly on the surface of the soil. It keeps the squirrels from digging in the pots. It needs to be reapplied several times during the summer, but it's easy to do and economical.

Those are Acer Dissectum * i think that is the correct spelling. Those are my favorite / most treasured ornamental trees.
Also on the fertilizer questions. Be sure to read the labels. Many slow release fertilizer are temperature activated. Water activated is easier to use successfully.

Almost everyone speaks about the short time you spend shaping a bonsai, repotting it, etc. Almost noone mentions the aspect that caring for bonsai is a daily routine. It is easy to learn the techniques from tutorials… I find it hard to learn the consistency :)

Good point! Yes, techniques are important, but the daily caring for your bonsai is what is going to keep your bonsai alive and healthy.

    1. How do I know when I can work on my trees? Is there a reliable resource? I hear don’t do it in every season & others say you can do it in any season.
    2. I have a full size Birch (about 6 feet tall) that I want to bonsai. It’ll require a trunk chop (there are buds on the trunk & no graft). How and when do I make that cut?

You can work on your trees whenever you want! You can better see where you are going when the tree has no leaves. Don't clip too often to let the tree grow to strengthen and then to thicken the trunk.
I have topped birch in my garden with poor luck because they don’t shoot up very well. You can cut off the entire truck and you will have a nice clump quickly. There is an aspen forest in Arizona that is a clone that came from the roots of ONE tree! I never attempted bonsai because birch is known to be short lived due to the softness of the wood.
That said, you may want to do something unusual and enjoy a nice clump birch bonsai for may years. That is, cut off your tree to encourage sprouting and put it in a shallow bonsai pot (maybe on a soak pan to avoid drying out),…and enjoy it while you are at it. Best wishes!

Hello Dr. Chang. I got a question for you. I'm from Croatia from an island and im trying to make bonsai from the local oak that we have here. Since it's very windy here the plant adapted so that it doesn't have a lot of fiberous roots, but more like a tape root that gose realy deep in the ground. Have you ever worked on material like that, or have some suggestions on how to deal with roots like this? I don't want to kill the plant by cutting the, what it seems like, only root.

One thought is to cut the tap root to force fibrous roots to grow near the top. That is, dig up the tree in stages. All tree have tap roots. My guess it is not the wind, rather it is being on an island, so may have more sandy soil causing the roots to go deep.

Just wondering about trying to root hardwood cuttings. How thick can they be and what time of year is best to attempt. I. E. Summer/ spring etc. i’ve tried on some Australian species but not much luck. Thanks and love your input to your channel. 👏👏👍

Hardwood cutting for deciduous trees are not difficult, but evergreens are hard…Usually start starting late fall on. To start, try elm and maples…those are the easiest.
