- This week was meant to be a deload week, but instead I went to run a Half Marathon in Bath. I really needed this run to go well, but it ended up going horribly wrong.
I'm still the slow but stubborn me though!

Congratz on completing the Bath half marathon! Sorry about your injury though, having to run the last 2 hours in pain is brutal.
But still it is amazing to see how tough and determined you are.
I hope your knee is feeling better soon!
Thank you. It's surprising how strong your mind can be sometimes. Despite the physical pain, in my mind I was there to finish, so I just pushed and pushed. I don't know if I could push to that extent during the Marathon though if I experience pain again. I will do my best 💪
Well done on finishing. It's fantastic to see a truthful video about how hard the activities actually are. Now it's time for the rest and recovery. As a couple of other commenters have said, the benefits of PT and S&C was/is massive for me. I don't think I would still be running without it. Look after yourself.
When I re-started running a couple of years ago I was really good at S&C, but as running has taken so much more time, I'm really struggling to find time and energy, BUT I really think the reason for my injuries is the lack of strength in my legs and glutes. So I have started to add these back into my weeks and hopefully I'll become stronger. Thank you for the comment. I value your input very much 😊
Well done in just finishing the damn thing! Not everyone can run the half marathon! I know we're all different and i'm not a Dr of PT etc but when did a lot of glute strengthening exercises and resistance band work it did help my knee pain a lot. Good luck in Manchester, im running it too in the green wave start.
Thank you! Yes, I really need to include more strength and conditioning exercises into my training. I definitely don't do enough and I'm paying the price 😞 I've started to add them in. Better late than never. Hopefully it'll improve things and I can avoid all these injuries. Wow, green wave! You must be fast. How's your training going? Have you run the Manchester Marathon before?
Week 12/15 , getting close now! This will be my 2nd manchester marathon, hoping to beat last year's time.
@@simonrunc8067 I believe in you 💪 Good luck with the rest of the training!
Hope you rest and recover. I had both IT band and runners knee issues when I started to run long distances about 15 years ago and the pain always came around at 8 or 9 miles. It gets really frustrating. You really need to take some break to heal and go slower in your training. I do feel like you increased your mileage too soon into your training which could have caused overuse injuries. Good luck and don’t worry if you will not be completely ready for the marathon this time. You can walk/run the race if you need to and there will always be more races in the future.
I've on and off had knee issues from running in the past and it is very very frustrating. I've been following a Marathon training plan thinking it would give me the best chance in succeeding, but I guess I've only run my first ever Marathon about six months ago, and demanding my body to run twice that distance in a rather short space of time was probably a bit too optimistic. I've not been training recently other than strength workouts and I'm planning to use the gym a bit more to keep up with my fitness on either the bike or elliptical machine. There will be other Marathons in the future. I will do my best though. Thank you as always! 😊
Well done on getting through this. I have a knee niggle and, as we’re three weeks out, I’m considering dramatically reducing my load during the taper to make sure I get to the start line niggle-free. No more fitness to gain this close to the marathon, so all about rest. Wishing the best for you!
Sorry about your knee-niggle 😞 It's so disheartening, isn't it!? I haven't been running properly last and this week due to pains. I might try a little short run this evening and see how that feels. If it's bad then I'll go to the gym instead tomorrow and try to recover while keeping up with my fitness. You're wise to reduce the load at this point. There's not much more you can add at this stage. More about staying fit and healthy to get to the start line 🤞
These things happen to us all when running unfortunately. Just see how you recover and then plan accordingly. You may be fine, hopefully, but don't risk an injury getting worse. Sometimes you've got to play the long game.
Thanks. I've been off my feet again this week. I was planning to go and use the exercise bike at the gym instead but that hasn't gone to plan either. 'Play the long game' definitely sounds right. I hear stories where it can take people years to succeed in big running events. I need to be more patient and kinder to my body. Thank you!
Hey hey thanks for sharing this. It’s very interesting. Still vlogging in the actual marathon. Crazy!! Well done for doing it. But take care though 😢. Don’t overdo it!!!!!
Thanks. I wanted to document the journey but the knee pain took over so didn't film most of the run 😞 I've been resting all week and not done any running so hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching mate!
Well done Yuenny for not giving up and getting across the finish line, hoping it hasn’t caused an injury but stay positive , we are all cheering you on , try not to be too down and if it causes you to rest a bit then there is no shame in that , the body will always tell us how it feels, good luck you’ve got this remember we are with you all the way , 👍🏼
You're absolutely right. The body is good at telling us things, so I should listen. I haven't been running since the Half Marathon, but I was planning to use the exercise bike at the gym instead. However, that didn't go to plan either because I had problems with my car when I got in to drive to the gym 😞 Sometimes it's hard not to not feel like the world is against me, but I have to push through and keep going 💪 Thank you for your support and kind words as always 😊
Aww my bestie, you're so strong. Love you lots 😘
Thank you 😘
Not all runs will turn out as expected. The important thing is to learn from it and not let the result defect you. You still finished the half marathon thus congratulations. Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you. The knee pain came out of nowhere and I think I was just really disappointed because in my head I knew I would have run it faster than I did the first time. Like you said, I still finished though 😊
Way to go Yuenny! Rest and recover! You deserve it woo! Stay positive 🥰 You’ll do better for sure 👍 Have you checked out the pain with a PT? I’m rooting for you 🤙🤙🤙
Thanks. I'm going to rest and see if things improve. If not then I'll see a professional 😊
Yikes! I would have stopped. Rather stop than potentially make an injury worse and end up not running for weeks. I've learned that the hard way. There is always another race you can do another time. Hope you recover ok.
Thank you. Yes, I probably should have stopped when I think back now. It's strange though, because it was really painful at the time but now five days later I'm struggling to remember how bad it really was 😄 I've been off my feet all week and feels so much better now.
Get well.
Thank you!
Nothing worse than an injury. I pulled my right calf muscle and couldn't run for 4 weeks, now use an adjustable calf compression support when doing long or fast runs. Hope the knee gets better soon. Good luck with your running
Totally. Injuries are the worst and very disheartening when you've put in so much time, effort and hope 😞 Do you still wear the compression support now or was it just during recovery? I wear a knee sleeve support after runs when it hurts sometimes but never know how (un)comfortable it might be running with it on. Are you training for anything at the moment?
@@YuennyLam training for derby 10k. Sunday 24th. I will be wearing the compression supports on both legs . They don't effect your running unlike a knee brace. I would just take it easy and start with short distances. I know it's depressing but you don't want to make it worse. Good luck and I will be watching your road to recovery on you tube.
@@iangrice997 All the best of luck with your 10K 💪 Thank you for your support! I might try a little short run after work today and see how that feels. Then decide my next course of actions 😊
First congrats and cheers up :)
Have you ever thought about going to see a podiatrist? She/ he might be able to give you answers about your foot and knee (for me it was like a miracle)
Wish u the best on your journey 🙌🏼
Thank you 😊
Potentially. I am looking into various professionals and comparing them. What the benefits are between them etc. They're so expensive so I don't want to just go without knowing more. I've had a sports/running analysis done last year which was very interesting.
Are you training for anything at the moment?
@@YuennyLam I’m doing an half marathon in 3 days in the south of France 🇫🇷
From my personal experience, he did the expertise on what was going thru my body and did a quick check on what was lacking and the possible reason of my knees injury (surprisingly I saw him today)
We all have different way of running and they can do a personal sole that fits on own way
Oooh.... I love France! Hope your training has been going well. But you saw him today? For injury/pain?
It's definitely worth it and I will surely get seen at some point. At the moment I'm hoping with rest I'll get better 🤞
I honestly think you should reconsider doing the marathon. Especially if you have this severe knee pain… 😢
I know. It's definitely in the back of my mind that I may not be able to run it 😢
Congratulations! Whatever happens, you are still beautiful and intelligent (hope you don't mind me saying that!).
Awww...that's really sweet 😊 Thank you!
Rest up and take it easy. Get to a professional and get there opinion on it 👌
Thanks. I'm currently just resting and see if it gets better. Some pains have previously gone away with rest, but if not then I'll see a professional. Thanks 😊
Have you made a decision on the marathon? Does seem a shame to back out this close to race day. But you need to go with how you're feeling.
I haven't decided yet. I still want to run it but my injuries aren't looking too good at the moment. I'm giving running a break but trying to keep up with fitness by using the exercise bike and cross trainer at the gym. I will just have to see nearer the time. So the answer is I really don't know but still hopeful 😞 A few people suggested I recover and get myself to the start line. Maybe I can still do that and see what happens on the day.
Sounds like IT band syndrome if it’s on the outside of your knee, let me know :)
Interesting. Didn't think it would be the IT band because I used to always think it's higher up for some reason, but I guess it stretches a lot further down than I think. Thanks for that. I'll have a look into it!
@@YuennyLam yeah it band stretches basically spans the whole of your femur and attaches towards the knee. Common site of inflammation is around its attachment site where the tendon repetitively rubs on neighbouring structures. Basically means you feel fine for however many miles and all of a sudden it comes on. Nasty injury for that reason because you can feel fine! Common treatment is strengthening the glute med which attaches into it and stretching the TFL. Don’t bother with foam rolling or massaging the IT band. Let me know how it goes :)
@@Alex-po7oq Thanks. That's very interesting stuff. I feel like I'm learning so much through lack of knowledge and probably mistakes trying to run my first Marathon. I do use my massage gun on the IT band, specifically on the left side because it feels a bit tight around there usually. And that probably explains the sudden knee pain. You're right, I was absolutely fine then suddenly out of nowhere I was in pain. Felt like my knee was going to buckle with each step I tried to run. I have a lot to work on!
@@YuennyLam 🙏🙏 being a physio does help with my running but I also got IT band syndrome and currently rehabbing it now! The it band itself can’t technically be ‘tight’ as it isn’t a muscle or anything, but it has the feel that it is potentially due to muscles like the TFL being tight, so stretching that is a good thing! :)
@@Alex-po7oq You're a pro! Thank you so much. I'm already reading about TFL stretches and watching videos on how to. Hopefully I'll be able to improve everything and become stronger 💪
