The aircraft (N245T) was a Cessna 421C registered to Dan Dunn 67 who was flying with Jessica Melton 42 on board. The flight abruptly diverted from its filed flight plan between Longmont, CO and Ogden, UT (flying south of Steamboat Springs) toward the airport. It overflew the airport at Steamboat Springs made several reversing circles north of the airport, never entering into a standard pattern for approach or landing but did line up for a short straight-in landing on Runway 14, and then crashed about 1000 feet south of the end of Runway 32.
I don't think you probably need to wait to get a report on the condition of anybody in the plane - the thing didn't land....it obviously plowed into the ground and exploded.
No one inside that aircraft could survive that inferno. With the weather heating up, and these heat domes popping up everywhere, I anticipate there will probably be other crashes involving density altitude and pilots either not understanding or thinking they have the distance and power to take off and climb.
Excellent point. Take-offs at that altitude and higher summer temperatures require pilots to calculate lift and speed requirements, as they have been taught.
A Cessna 421 shouldn't have a problem with the density altitude. But if it lost an engine, it could be game over. Those geared Continentals don't have the best reputation.
I am not surprised by the sheer volume of private aircraft crashes that occur within the USA. Absolutely ridiculous amount of incompetence and sub standard pilotage skills. The lack of common sense and failure to observe standard pre flight planning, inspection and weather observations are inherently the precursors to disaster. Your methods and duties as pilots require a high level of professionalism. Don't make your mark in the world as a smoking hole in the ground!!!

I think it's just the news outlets are catching on to them and trying to use the publicity from the Boeing incidents which have made people more sensitive to aviation crashes.

Looks like possible engine failure, but UA-camrs will use it as material. If your a pilot never end up on UA-cam is the goal now. Prayers for the family.
There should be designated areas where these planes can fly, and designated routes, so that people who don't want to live under the noise or risk of other injury can choose to live there. Currently they can fly pretty much anywhere.
That’s called “don’t live near an airport” which is similar to “don’t live at the base of an active volcano” or “don’t live immediately next to train tracks if you prefer a quiet evening”. There doesn’t need to be new laws so you can absolve yourself of common sense or accountability.
What an ignorant comment. Do you think people are going to ask if their house or office happens to be under a 10-mile wide air corridor, just in case a plane might crash on top of it someday? Really sir.
When I was leaving my house about 20 miles from the Crash site, I noticed there was increased gusts of wind. I also see, a friend of mine witness the crash and it was in an uncontrollable flatspin. RIP
Also, it was a twin engined Cessna 421. Those are turbo normalized engines. What can cause a stall when experiencing engine failure in a twin engine aircraft? Hint: Vmc….

How do you know this? I know man named Dan Dunn from decades ago. Hoping it isn't him.

That is unfortunate.
Thanks for doing the research that CBS Colorado didn't.

Damn kamikazes! Who knew they had alcohol in them?
Jeez there was a plane crash last week on the road in front of our house
Geez! That's like the 5th one this week!
Maybe it's a sign.
FLYING CARS ARE NOT READY!
What goes up must come down spinning wheel goes round and round.
This is the third small plane crash in Colorado in less than a month!

In summer the weather heats up. Always has, always will
A lot of pilots underestimated the thinness of the summer air at high altitudes. Perhaps a cause.
Excellent point. Take-offs at that altitude and higher summer temperatures require pilots to calculate lift and speed requirements, as they have been taught.
My buddy J said it was actually on approach to the airport when he saw it go down. They literally missed it by a mile 1/2 if that. sad.

Ok, these planes keep falling out of the sky. Something is wrong.
Yes, we are hearing almost daily about planes crashing.
Very windy here today.
Ok Alex Jones
Too many people with enough money to buy a small plane, but not enough sense to pilot it safely.

It might be fairly obvious, sadly, if you don't see any strangers wondering around, kind of dazed, they didn't make it out...
When did trailer parks become mobile home parks? If its got a hitch and axles under it, its a trailer

Just checked ForeFlight and density altitude as reported 12 minutes ago is 9739 feet.

Hope it wasn't a 337 I've lost two friends flying those in the last decade.
Is there something that made you think it was a 337?

How much you wanna bet, the govt says it’s now unsafe to live in the trailer park, then big corporate buys the land to develop it. Any wages? 🥸
