  • ABOUT THE SCORE: Best known as an arranger and orchestrator, British composer Ken Thorne nonetheless managed to demonstrate on multiple occasions his worth as a composer. While his corpus is largely defined by the John Williams interpolations he provided for the “Superman” sequels, a more modest project like 1979’s “Arabian Adventure” allowed the composer to spread his wings with greater style and personal identity. The result is a lush, soaring Middle Easter-flavored score that recalls the best inclinations of Ravel and Debussy, replete with a small wordless female choir (a la Debussy’s “Sirens”) and dancing Rimsky-Korsakov-esque violin solos. His main theme is an expansive idea presented sumptuously in the main title that opens this suite, though it’s the high-flying, woodwind-fluttering “flying” cues associated with magic carpet rides in the film that leave the most lasting impression. While the film itself is a modest affair at best whose ambitions exceed the budgetary reach, Thorne’s music positively soars!
Recorded at CTS Studios in London in ’79 by the great John Richards, the modest-sized orchestra is captured in a luminous, shimmering recording that unto itself is as a enjoyable as the music it contains. A spirited listen for fans of lush, adventurous music!
