The perfect intersection of work, passion,...life, I guess. The best part is, we get to come along with you, even if only in spirit. Once again, Scott, thank you for such inspiring video.
Really enjoyed this! Not enough people document this bit of filmmaking so it’s really fun to see how you approach ideas when shooting. I’m considering the bmpcc4k but most videos are rig setups and very little on using it
Great video. I especially enjoyed the picture-in-picture with the dominant image being the person holding the camera. That for me was super helpful and illuminating for my own work. Subscribed!
Thanks Todd, great to hear that feedback. A few others have mentioned the picture in picture bit so I'll definitely do more of that. Glad to have you along for the journey, let me know if you would like to see any particular types of videos.
Ugh Scott!!!!! Every time I watch your content it makes me want to get out in to nature. I need to. I say that every time but I NEED to. Your stuff is too cool. Great job! Keep doing this!
What a wonderful piece. Subbed. It was great to see a professional team at work with a completely achievable set up. Stunning locations, great people, fantastic footage.
This collaboration of Gabe, Landon, and Scott have produced some magical scenes. Great work, amazing adventure, thanks for sharing these great behind the scenes images from BMPCC 4k.
This is Gold!! My dream work is nature documentary. But I have a long way to go! Got the gear but still lack the experience and storytelling I guess. But watching your video was super inspiring and got me pumped again to try and start pursuing my passion again!
That's so great to hear! I'd love to be doing some higher end nature docs at some point in my career. Storytelling is definitely at the heart of everything, whether it's a film about a bird or a person. I wish you luck!
This is absolutely beautiful. I’m glad I found your channel and look forward to more of your stuff. Would really like to see which profiles you shot with here and how you graded them.
Hey Brett, thanks for the comment, glad you are following along. The GH5 footage was shot in natural -5 saturation -5 contrast. The BMPCC4K footage is shot in LOG. I plan to do a video on my colour grading process at some point down the line too.
Thanks for watching Tyler, I feel lucky to have this stuff out my backdoor. Just watched your collaborating video and totally agree. I made a similar video. I love collaboration!
Unreal behind the scenes! Crazy good quality, and amazing rigs. How do you like working with the black magic cameras? I've personally only shot on the Canon DSLRs but have always been tempted to dabble with the Black Magics
Cheers, glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching! The BM cameras are pretty awesome. I love the interface on them. The ergonomics of the Pocket4k takes a bit of time to get used to, and you really need an external monitor to fully utilize it. That said, I love the picture that comes out of the camera. I think I might purchase one for my own kit and get rid of my G85. It's nice that it shares the same mount as the GH5 so all my lenses can transfer over easily. I didn't get to play with shooting in RAW on it, but excited to give that a try at some point.
Thanks! Check out the finished video 'Seeking Connection' if you haven't had the chance - would love to hear what you think. We had 3 batteries if I recall correctly and then used the Power Junkie to charge them off NPF batteries. So we always had one on the charger to keep things fresh.
A few of the drone shots look like warp stabilizer was applied, but I can't tell if that's just lens warping for the pans? I have the same drone but haven't had a chance to fully test, so wanted to check. Shots look great regardless. Amazing quality these things are pulling now, sheesh.
Hey Josh, I can't recall. I might have applied it to one. Most are straight out of camera. There is a bit of lens distortion sometimes. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching. Florida is flat, but some beautiful forests. My parents live there. I'm definitely considering picking up the pocket cinema after using it on this trip. Such a great image.
Love my BMPCC 4K but I was wondering how it did on battery over the project? I’m looking to do a 30-40 mike 3 day hike and wasn’t sure how that’ll be with battery solutions.
It's a nice camera. I think we used 3-4 of the internal batteries for an overnight trip. Obviously depends on how much you film but I think you'll want at least 10 batteries worth of power in some form or another for a trip that long.
Amazing project and great BTS! Thank you for sharing. Question can you talk about the settings/ information used on the BMPCC4K? I am taking mine to Colorado and I’m curious of your BM equipment and video settings. Example BRAW? 24/30/60fps? Battery? Etc etc. Thanks!
Hey Marc, we shot this project in Prores LT. This was primarily to conserve storage as we didn't want to run out of space on the hike. Everything was shot in either 24 or 60 fps depending if we wanted to show the shot in real time or slow it down in post. We shot everything in log. For batteries we used the standard LP-E6 and charged with the Power Junkie while on the trip. Check out my follow up video about preproduction for this trip and it'll provide a bit more context. Hope that helps!
Scott , this was sooo useful the bts were shot with the gh5,vlog ?the looks are amazing and the flares at 10:45 with what lens was that! Thanks for showing is your jorney .
Thanks David! Most of the BTS is shot with the GH5, Natural profile -5 saturation, -5 contrast. That shot at 10:45 was actually shot on the BMPCC4K, might use those in the final piece. Appreciate you watching!
Wow! Great look-behind-the-scene Video. It's so interesting to see what it takes to make a film, so much time and effort... Please give us more of that how-to-do videos. It really inspires me to get out and try some little video by myself. Thank you for sharing all this with us. I do also have a question how you srart such a project. Do you plan every shot before going out? I think a lot of ideas also come only then while out in the field?
Thank you for watching. You've given me an idea to make a video about what went into preproduction. Maybe I'll make that soon. To answer your question, we did a lot of preplanning for how we wanted to tell the story, gear we'd need, timing, interview direction, and general look and feel of the finished video. Most of the actual shots we figured out while on the move though.
Thank you Scott for replying me. Oh yes, that would be great if you could give us a method how to plan things before go out shooting. I am always looking forward to your next upload! Thank you
some really cool insights and looked like you had a fun trip together! I'll definitely check out more of your videos, is the final project already finished?
Thanks for watching. We put it on hold for a bit due to other projects, but have been working on it lately. We hope to release it in the next few weeks.
Thank you Dan. Probably won't make it out that way anytime in the near future but if I do.... I'm originally from South Western Michigan. Moved to British Columbia and fell in love with the place!
Shots are so stable without a gimbal! Beautiful handheld shots
Cheers, thanks Celina, appreciate you watching!

The drone photography was so beautiful!

Awesome video Scott. Thanks for the effort to produce this (and to Gabe and Landon). What a stunning location.
Thesis David, glad you enjoyed the video. It was a pleasure to put together. The spot is seriously incredible.
One of the best BTS I've seen. Simple, informative and beautifully put together man!

That time lapse with the ice was awesome!
How many batteries did you take for the BMPCC4K?
Thanks! Check out the finished video 'Seeking Connection' if you haven't had the chance - would love to hear what you think. We had 3 batteries if I recall correctly and then used the Power Junkie to charge them off NPF batteries. So we always had one on the charger to keep things fresh.
This was sweet man - really shows the effort that goes into making the vision - no glamour, just lots of work. Can't wait for the film!
Thanks Mike. Definitely a lot of hard work on this one. Totally worth it though.

Was this all shot on the black magic? Im impressed think im gonna order one
Thanks for watching. The BTS is mostly shot on the GH5 while the actual film is mostly BMPCC4K and a bit of the URSA Mini Pro.
Excellent footage and video! Florida flat here.
I have a GH5 rig and now a brand new BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K as well - can't wait to start shooting with it.
