A Short Documentary premiering Americans knowledge about a place we call a Norway. Presented by Norway Communicates Directed and Produced by: Rogan Allen & Veronica Vanglin
Why do we scandinavians in 8th grade need to learn the name of and placement of every US state when Americans don't even know which continent we are on? :(
Wow, as an American that is kind of odd to me. Many Americans don't know how many states there are in general, much less knowing the name and placement. (I understand that this is a 7 year old comment, but felt the need to type it out anyway)
@@HTV-2_Hypersonic_Glide_Vehiclethat’s crazy, I’m Norwegian and I had to learn about all the states and write about all of them, I also had to be able to name and locate each state on a map (in 5th grade)

Norway is not the center of the world. It's a tiny part of Europe and just a spot on the global map. How much do YOU know about USA? Where is Wyoming? What's the biggest city in Michigan? What is the color of the flag of Texas? Did you even know that each state has it's own flag?
Most Norwegians know the names of many states and some even their capitals... Americans... They don't even know where it is on the map... This just shows how bad Americans is in geography, they could just as well say "Wait, isn't Japan in China?"
Jonas Dalbakk Now u take all american under the same cam, that the same as sayin Criminals are terrorists, not all criminals are terrorists, Not Americans are so little educated in geographic
Jonas Dalbakk if u ask a person from any country in the world about the US the will know something. thats because the US has been the a superpower and the biggest player on the world scene since WW2. Norway is not. should Americans know every country in the world and their capital? do you know that? without looking it up can u say every nation in Asia or Africa? cause that what your asking Americans to do. you can replace Norwegians with the name of any country in the world to see how wrong you are.
I'm a fish first of all do you mean states as in country or states as in american state the first one is easy its 3 states the second is hard since there are over 50 states in the US. And if you are talking state capital it gets worse. state capital of New York is Albany not New York. second America is not an European state Norway is. so that compering the twos knowledge of Europe is stupid. You should compare Americas knowledge of Europe too Norwegian knowledge of Asia or Africa. Also im Norwegian so i know that what you are saying is not true.

You got some facts wrong there mate ;) "Konfirmasjon" is not about putting your faith in God. but it is more about a celebration and aknowledgement of a child starting to become an adult, even though you don't "come of age" (sorry, didn't find any better word), before you are 18. Konfirmasjon is, as you said, usually done in one of two ways. First is the christian way, which also contains a personal renewal of your baptism promises that your parents (or you) have done earlier in your life. The second one is has nothing to do with God, and is just a celebration of becoming an adult. Also, one of the most commonly wrong beliefs is that we have polar bears in the norwegian mainland (We don't). Although there is polar bears on the island "Jan Mayem", which belongs to Norway. Another fact about the flag: The pattern of the flag is not only due to christianity, but the fact that we were in a union with Denmark (then Sweden), for over a hundred years. Therefore, when we became independent, we made a flag which looked very much like theirs. There are three different spoken languages, first we have "nynorsk" and "bokmål", which both are quite similar and can almost be seen upon as two different accents. The third one is the one spoken by the native Norwegians, which is "Sami". The Sami's lives mainly in the northern parts of Norway, and there are also Sami's in Sweden and Finland. I'm writing waaay more than intended, but hopefully someone finds it interesting :)
maybe the states of USA is more important to peoples life in USA than the tiny country in north Europe called Norway. I guess more will point out Australia, Brasil, China, and France quicker than Norway.
I'm an American and if one wants to learn of other countries and cultures, you have to take it upon yourself to delve into these things. In America it is your own responsibility to learn, but most Americans are just trying to make a living day to day. Many of us have to work 40+ hours just to make ends meet. I think it's not going to be the end of the world if Americans don't know specific things about Norway. I love learning about different cultures and where specifically they are located on the map. There is beauty in all cultures and when humans start to realize this instead of trashing each other with insults of how stupid we are, (face it we have all been ignorant of something at any given point in our lives) then and only then will we grow and maybe become a peaceful human race.
language of norwegian, swedish, iceland, germanic, netherland, denmark are cousins, but also english to BUT not all cause english is mixed with latin(not all) er født i norge jeg også... ha en fin dag :)
Norwegians really have to stop fretting about the fact that not all people around the world know where or what Norway is. For heavens sakes..we are only 5 million people here, and we certainly are not the centre of the world. If you are not able to name the capitol of....say...Chad without extensive googling, you really do not have a case when you attack the skills in geography displayed in this clip.
But holy fuck dude... Did u really not read the end??? Every single day of the year nearly 30 MILLION MEALS WITH NORWEGIAN SEAFOOD Are ENJOYED WORLDWIDE... ITS EXPORTED TO OVER 150
Well, its not just Noway. They know whats inside America. And the reason why people react is because they think they are the best at everyting. And when they show they are completly clueless what earth look like its just funny.
I learn about Norway every morning when I drink my coffee and watch "New Scandinavian Cooking" with Andreas Viestad! Lol. And I listen to Edvard Greig, he's my absolute favorite composer ever. There's a Norwegian spa down the road, I know older people that eat(and like!) lutefisk...the list goes on. There are bits and pieces of many different cultures here in America. I guess most people just don't take the time to notice them.
My god this made me laught! .....but i kinda want to make a similar video BUT with Amerika "isnt amerika in west Asia" just to give them a sick Burn....
spaciousky Well how many people speak Croatian, Polish, Scotish, Mongolian. ect? You cannot say that your country is superior just because your native language is English. Don't think that a contry is less worth JUST because their native language isnt well spoken...
Agreed. Minnesota, Wisconsin (although more German but a lot of Scandinavians as well) and upper Michigan is where a lot of the immigrants settled from Norway. It's where my great grandfather settled after he left Lillesand and of course, he settled where a Norwegian community was as he didn't speak english much if any.
Why is America stupid? there is stupid people in every country. By the way who wins the most noble prices in physics, chemistry and medicine? it is either Americans or people working at American Universities. And besides 8 out of the top 10 universities in the world is Americans. So do not label all of America as stupid please.
Kjelly Lund Well, consider yourselves honoured! Norway give out the Nobel prizes every year and you get some of them too! Your politicians and such maybe smart, but that doesn't mean every sivil person is!
Kjelly Lund Well, consider yourselves honoured! Norway give out the Nobel prizes every year and you get some of them too! Your politicians and such maybe smart, but that doesn't mean every sivil person is!
Kjelly Lund The reason why so many universities in the world top are english speaking ones is that one of the ranking criteria is how much the scientists of a particular university are cited worldwide. And it follows logically that universities that work in English and dont have to additionally translate their work into English, get more citations than, for example, I dont know, a Hebrew university in Israel (since it sudies a field of not so much public interest, and not so much in English( But it doesnt make it any worse of a university. It was just an example. The world top of universities is very much Anglo-American based. It is like saying that the best films are in America because they get all the Oscars (never mind that it is the prize given by the American film academy and is no basis for grading films of other countries) It is a little bit of the same with the university tops. It is also about what they sudy. many national universities study small /local) languages and folklore, and the results of those studies will rarely get international interest (and citations), and they are not meant to. many universities work for their own country mainly, and therefore are not in the top. universities of big countries have the luxury to choose according to their own interest because their culture and language does not need so much protection and preservation. Also, US has a huge population. So it is not very hard to have a few dozen good universities. But if a country of only one million has a university in the top 5% in the world (or has a university at all, for that matter), is so a much bigger achievement. and also, it is one thing to have a very uducated elite. But the thing about countries like Norway is that it provides very good (free) education for everyone, icluding the children of recent immigrants etc. According to Pisa tests (that measure education in Middle schools), Finland ranks second in the world, Norway comes somewhere soon after and the US and Britain not even in top 20. It is a concious choice of a country: to breed really top elite, or to provide everyone with normally good education. Same with medicine: there may be worlds top whatever hospitals in the US, but they only provide services for the priviliged few (usually those who can pay for it). In Scandinavia, also Norway, even if you are the most useless drunk and criminal who has never paid taxes (not to mention social security), you will get very good medical care, and for free. The same as everyone else. Or if you are a tourist and something happens to you and you have no insurance and no money. You will get the proper help anyway, and they will even pay for your trip home after hospital. I would rather live in a country that provides good quality services and security for all its members and even illegal members, than in a country taht has a few very top ..whatever, but most people do not have access to it anyway. and do not kid yourselt thinking that it is only the Us where science and research is going on. You may know more about American science and success since you live there, thats normal. But dont make the mistake of thinking thats all there is.. Norway has one of the highest living standards in the world (also Sweden, Finland and Iceland). That cannot happen without science based approach, educated and healthy people, secure environment etc. It is one thing to be only a top university, but another thing to be a world top country. Think about it. of all the 193 countries, to have one of the highest living standards, it is not a MINOR thing. And by the way, i am not Norwegian, or Scandinavian. But I would not have passed fourth grade without knowing the world map, or High School without knowing the main division of language groups. I also trust that had the same questions been asked in one of those top universities, most people would have known where norway is.
What is wrong with American Education system? 8 out of the top ten universities in the world is American, and Harvard is ranked the best university in the world.
Kjelly Lund Stop fooling yourself. I have much respect for most Americans, except those who think that the US is the greatest place on earth far better than any place in the universe.
i am not fooling myself all i am saying is you do not put down the whole american educational system just because people do not know about Norway. US educational system is good enough. It has high prestige and stupid people you will find in all countries, and with 193 countries in the whole world it is very few who knows about all of them.
Kjelly Lund The point is that US isn't perfect, neither is Norway. I just hate people who blindly think that the US is best in everything. When it comes to this video, I believe that they showed the footage of those who didn't know anything about Norway (except the guy in the car) even though the majority knew. But saying that Norway is a small insignificant country is stupid. It is very small in population but not small when comes to what it does and how it presents it self internationally. Norway is a big ally of the US and US is quite dependent on the oil and gas from Norway.
usa already have many allies world wide, and England is the country which is considered as the one with the special relation. And remember many of US States has more people and is bigger than Norway. And this dont only go for the USA only. Not many in the UK which is just across you has so much knowledge about Norway either. To know about Norway you got to live there, or have a special interest which makes it natural to know about Norway.
I'm impressed :) It's not like Norway is a country that many people would know that much about. If someone came up to me on the street and asked me the same type of questions about a random country like Kyrgyzstan or Gabon, I would honestly not be able to answer a single question.
TheBigCheezeG de fleste amerikanerene finner ikke ut at det finnes noe utafor usa før de blir 15, da lærer de kansje noe om spania og england. Ikke lille Norge, som har noen av de rikeste folka i verden når du ser på per innbygger
What a bunch of whiners. The reason most Norwegians know anything about the US is because the US is huge, everyone has heard of them, they have a massive international culture, and you guys are force fed their entertainment. The average American knows about the larger, better known countries. Norway isnt on the radar for most countries, no matter how self important many Norwegian's feel. That is a fact.
Rallycart well i think you should read up on Norwegian worldwide economy and peace treaties. oh and at the same time read up on WW2 history. the first battle Hitler had to retreat from was Narvik. oh and also ask ANY Country outside of the U.s an south America about Norway an you will get better answers. Canadians are so much smarter in comprrison to people from the U.S
i didn't surprise when i see this .. cause .. i remember 1997 one touristman from norway come to emirates.. and asked some students questions like this... when we didn't know where it located.. but today i am living norway ..
I like the description :D "a place we call a Norway" really :P putting up this "educational" vid about Norway.. and calling it a Norway in the prosess :D had to smile :) also, never seizes to amaze me how much "hate" is in comments. From both sides that is :) not needed ^^
its scary that the girl saying it to the left of Sweden is actually the closest one to being right. And props to that old guy for knowing our capitol. I am also suprised at how many people (in this clip) that knew our flags colours.
To be fair, could you go to Norway and start asking these questions about South Africa? Or Indonesia? Or Chile? Would Norwegians know the answers? (like the flag colours?)
Karen Marie Mykstu And to that madam I say, bullshit. :) And when I'm in Oslo next month I'll ask someone in the street for the flag colours of Guyana, when they can't Google it, and get back to you.
TheOtherGuy Don't wanna be too picky here :) But most of the vikings invading England and France were from Denmark. As far as I know the Norwegian vikings went up and around to raid ireland ect.
MaMastoast they were from all of Scandinavia. infact the first known viking attack in England was done by vikings from Hordaland in todays Norway. knut the great was danish but rules over most of Norway so he would have taken many troops from Norway to invade England. Harald Hardrada of Norway was a Norwegian king that invaded England but lost.
Funfact: American gasprices is around 4 dollar gallon (According to the almighty internet) 1 gallon is approxamitly 3.78541178 liters so lets say 4 liters. Norwegian gasprices are around 14-15 Norwegian kroner (NOK) for 1 liter. In American this would be 2.58 us dollars per liter. If we were to have your low gasprices we would pay around: 1 dollar or 6 NOK for a liter.
I saw this video for the first time today. Thank god I'm Norwegian. We are so lucky that we are actually educated and fed properly. I know this is made to make Americans look bad, but there's so much truth in the ignorance displayed here. As a Norwegian, I'd like people to come and see how fantastic and amazing it is here. It's the most peaceful and liberal country in the world, no doubt! The people are friendly and forgiving. The nature is one of a kind in the world for sure! Come visit!=)
NOT according to Wikipedia. They say GDP per capita Norway is 98 000 dollars(the oil fund apparently grew 18% last year instead of the usual 13.5%. But 49 000 for the US is correct according to wiki:)
Yes, im well aware the atoms consist of more empty space than matter. I study physics. Atoms are small, and can be grouped tightly together. A LEGO block is also pretty hollow, and filled with empty space, but get a alot of them, and you can build a chair.
I'm not as ignorant as the other Americans. I can locate Norway on a globe, as well as many other countries, and I appreciate the different cultures in the world.
In defense of the old lady, a lot of people across the globe think Norway is the capital of Sweden. And I'm not surprised that people in far away countries have never heard of Norway.
I am a norwegian, and to be fair they should have asked more people these questions. Asking the same people new questions about Norway when they have already proven they know little about it, gives a skewed impression of americans knowledge about Norway.

There is beauty in all cultures and when humans start to realize this instead of trashing each other with insults of how stupid we are, (face it we have all been ignorant of something at any given point in our lives) then and only then will we grow and maybe become a peaceful human race.
americans....... learing about them self and mcdonalds......
As a Norwegian I'm kinda afended
Perhaps you should offended instead.
USA: "Norway is a socialist hell."
Also USA: "We need more people from Norway."
Again, USA: "Where is Norway?"
I'm a norwegiangirl and this is crazy. I can so much about USA and they can't nothing about Norway? Wooow
The US? I think it's a part of Asia, maybe Africa?? 😏😜
in norway we speak german?? LOL
True...
language of norwegian, swedish, iceland, germanic, netherland, denmark are cousins, but also english to BUT not all cause english is mixed with latin(not all)
er født i norge jeg også... ha en fin dag :)
Mërgim Kurtisi Actually, some english words came from the norwegian/germanic language when the vikings ruled England.
I'm one of those American descendants. Been there a few times and it's beautiful. The Norwegians are rightly proud of their great country.
Gawd, this made my day :)
this really shows how ignorant some people are
Ha jeg hadde jeg?? as a Norwegiand do i feel offended right now.
+adrian fredriksen it should be "hei hei, her er jeg" lol
+theawesomesausage ikr
hvem har laget dette ?
Er jeg den eneste som ikke er fornærmet? Haha, føler at noen av svarene er svært imponerende i forhold til andre videoer jeg har sett. :)
0:50 the only blond girl know where norway is XD
Jeg elsker kuk
Bra for deg 😝
CrappyScrap Herregud.
Ring meg.. jk
Jeg også
Din egen?
@Kuoin do you know where every state is?
awesome :D love this film ^_^
"Beautiful, blonde people" xD
I was like "Oh wow thank you!"
I bet there were more people who got at least half of those questions right than there were those who got it wrong.
America will be soon in west Asia, and we are going to own it . So. forget Norway, start learning English .
spaciousky ? The entire Norwegian population speaks English.
History Empire Congratulation, I am not surprised, since almost all Europa speak English . How many countries speak Norwegians ??
spaciousky Well how many people speak Croatian, Polish, Scotish, Mongolian. ect? You cannot say that your country is superior just because your native language is English.
Don't think that a contry is less worth JUST because their native language isnt well spoken...
spaciousky since almost all Europa speak English, nah, nah. most can not, and will not learn English. It is only Scandinavia and Switzerland and such
what is wrong whith people?
well the person in the car knew enough about norway for me to approve lol.
I'm half Norwegian! But it's a shame I was born in America, what a stupid country. ;-;
Why is America stupid? there is stupid people in every country. By the way who wins the most noble prices in physics, chemistry and medicine? it is either Americans or people working at American Universities. And besides 8 out of the top 10 universities in the world is Americans. So do not label all of America as stupid please.
Not all of them.. But a large majority of them...
Wow. You "americans" should do something drastic about your education system
The thing that guy is saying at 2:42 is actually "Hei, hei, her er jeg!" It means something along the lines of "Hey, hey, here I am" :)
I'm impressed :) It's not like Norway is a country that many people would know that much about. If someone came up to me on the street and asked me the same type of questions about a random country like Kyrgyzstan or Gabon, I would honestly not be able to answer a single question.
I know a lot of states, how many parts of Norway can you name?
Blond hair with somewhat curls, or like mine when it gets to a certain lenght(2inches) it will curl. And last but not least blue eyes
Almost. Blue cross (sideways pointing left to right) then white. and then red.
Hva er greia med at du kommenterer på alle videoer relatert til Norge? Er du tidenes nasjonalist?
i didn't surprise when i see this .. cause .. i remember 1997 one touristman from norway come to emirates.. and asked some students questions like this... when we didn't know where it located.. but today i am living norway ..
I like the description :D "a place we call a Norway" really :P putting up this "educational" vid about Norway.. and calling it a Norway in the prosess :D had to smile :)
also, never seizes to amaze me how much "hate" is in comments. From both sides that is :) not needed ^^
I'm greek and I love Norway!!
Thanks for making a video like this. I learned a lot and I was pretty entertained, especially with the Music and Interviews. Amazing Job!
The guy in the car was decent at least. And he could say "hi, hi, here I am" and "I love Norway".
mmk, still working though on my grammar, but it'll get better after a while.
1:53 "Im from asia, I dont know much about Europe" You should know EVERTHING!
People think we speek german and spanish?!
Damn...
its scary that the girl saying it to the left of Sweden is actually the closest one to being right.
YES!!!
Karen Marie Mykstu And to that madam I say, bullshit. :) And when I'm in Oslo next month I'll ask someone in the street for the flag colours of Guyana, when they can't Google it, and get back to you.
Norway is the most Northern country in Europe. The Vikings that invaded England, France and discovered America (Vinland) were from Norway.
Og kopperet vårt til frihetsgudinnen
Like if u dont understand xD
TheOtherGuy And now the Norway is a colony of America .
Funfact: American gasprices is around 4 dollar gallon (According to the almighty internet)
1 gallon is approxamitly 3.78541178 liters so lets say 4 liters.
A Norwegian Viking named Leiv Erikson discovered the USA 500 years before Columbus.
this was a year ago, and actually we are 5 mill and 200 thousand now :)
I really wish UA-cam would create a way to edit one's comments, that way I wouldn't have to delete my comments in order to edit my errors. Sorry
i love Americans :) peace from Norway
tenk om de spurte deg om indonesia ?
Well said, you got my thumbs up.
"Hei, hei, her er jeg."
"Hey, hey, her I am"
and btw we dont call trains trikk.. train is a train (tog) a trikk is a small train going like 3-4 mp across the town
when u say europe the only thing americans can think of is UK, France and Germany
The funny thing is that it was the Norwegians that discovered America💀
We did it way before that stupid Columbus
NOT according to Wikipedia. They say GDP per capita Norway is 98 000 dollars(the oil fund apparently grew 18% last year instead of the usual 13.5%. But 49 000 for the US is correct according to wiki:)
"red... and... yellow?" haha!
I'm in Denmark Zoe, and I've been in Greece 3 times =)
I loved it, soo nice beaches ==)
Yes, im well aware the atoms consist of more empty space than matter. I study physics. Atoms are small, and can be grouped tightly together.
A LEGO block is also pretty hollow, and filled with empty space, but get a alot of them, and you can build a chair.
I'm an american and what I think of norway is my ancestor's land. The fatherland, land of beauty
I'm not as ignorant as the other Americans. I can locate Norway on a globe, as well as many other countries, and I appreciate the different cultures in the world.
I literally facepalmed multiple times when the people said that we speak german, spanish, french and swedish in Norway....
SHE SAID POLAR BEARS I'M DYING XD
In defense of the old lady, a lot of people across the globe think Norway is the capital of Sweden.
And I'm not surprised that people in far away countries have never heard of Norway.
haha a place that makes shoes, that one had me cracking up
When did you own Norway?
You are absolutely right sir ;)
Truly black hair is an extremely rare feature among people with descendants in Norway dating from before 1945.
I am a norwegian, and to be fair they should have asked more people these questions. Asking the same people new questions about Norway when they have already proven they know little about it, gives a skewed impression of americans knowledge about Norway.
The blond girl actually knew more than the others!
I bet the only reason why someone could say that our flag is Red, White and Blue is because its the same colors as USA.
Hei! Så kult! Snakker du mye norsk?
Hey! So cool! Do you speak a lot norwegian?
I'm Norwegian BTW.
