Removing a Stuck Oil Filter In a Location w/ Little room

- This video will demonstrate how to remove an oil filter when hand strength and filter wrench have failed. This one specifically shows how to deal with this issue when there is very little room to work. Tools needed: drill, screwdriver or a small rod (I used an Allen wrench).

Additional mess saving tip: (because "I've been there, done that.") Before you drill in from the side, with nail or drill, poke hole in bottom of oil filter first. You will drain the filter and have much less mess when drilling in from the side. Yes, it adds a minute to your procedure but I'd rather drain what oil I can, than have oil under pressure shoot everywhere when going in from side.
👉🍻🍻🍻🍻👌 thanks !
Yeah automobile engineer can design a whole car but they still cant design an easy way to remove oil filter
Look at the 1996 Ford ranger oil filter location when it’s stuck your sol
They fucking suck
Thank you so much! It worked very well for us. After several trips to get different kinds of oil wrenches. Your idea worked perfectly!!
Thank you for the great tip. You save me untold grief.
Thank you for your video yesterday I broke my filter can’t take it off, and very small room for my hand to get in , so today I will try your way.
This worked great. A screwdriver was too big for me to turn but I just used a 3/8" x 5" drill bit (detached from the drill) and was able to use that to turn it. F*ck valvoline for putting it on so ridiculously tight.
I just had some inventive fun changing my oil while I'm away from home, temporarily living in a trailer park. I put scrap 2 * 4 and 2 * 6 is in front of all four tires to drive onto and lift the truck up four and a half inches. I cut the side off of a brand new jumbo size box of Mini Wheats, I put the Mini Wheats in my cupboard, and I put four plastic bags Inside the Box. That is what I drained the oil into. Since I didn't have a oil filter removal tool, I used the hammer and screwdriver trick, worked great! The mouth of my plastic fruit juice container was too big for a funnel, so I poured my HP Sauce into the fruit juice container. Then I cut the bottom of the HP sauce container off and used the remaining container as an upside-down funnel. Then I poured the oil out of the plastic bags which were inside the cereal box, into the Now empty oil container, and tomorrow I'll take that oil to the recyclers.
I was thinking about doing this but didn't know if the filter would be able to handle the stress of taking it off after I drilled a hole in it because of how much force it was already taking to now even budge
just got the filter off my 99 taurus... drilled 3 holes and had to use 2 drivers at once for leverage. Damn was that sucker tight.
dude this worked, thank you!
This saved me!!! Thank you!!!!
You think about removing the plastic splash guards?
My friend you should show to drain out oil then filter. Thanks for your video
You call that "little room"? I call it "easy access"
This definitely worked when nothing else did.
similar case for Kia, tnx for the idea
Did this and it bent a snap on screwdriver. Any other advice?
Removing that plastic cover would have made a lot of sense
Gibbet Hoskins I was more focused on speed, this way was quicker than removing 8 bolts of the under cover.
What if you drill through but it still won’t come off? That’s what I’m worried about. My car will be stuck!
wac36 yup that’s what Iam worries about 😥the s o b who put my filter on.... ugh!!!!
Mine was stuck and that's what I was worried about. I thought about it and just said the heck with it. Came off with ease.
Try hammering two screw drivers in the bottom first and twist off, that way you spread the force to 2 points instead of 1. If it just shreds then try this method. If all else fails and the whole thing shreds then you gotta tap it out with a hammer and screw driver.
When you can touch the filter with both hands, it's not hard to reach.
Brilliant!!!
I did the same except as I pulled the screwdriver it ripped the filter across...its still stuck.
How’d you end up getting it out
Chain link oil filter wrench did the trick.
AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT FLINCHED WHEN THE OIL STARTRTED DRIPPING
Probably....
Next time turn to contact then 3/4 turn.
Coat the gasket w motor oil.
p.s. again: i'm going with K&N next time just to see if the nut on the filter is all they say it is. it costs more but it might be worth it. i know Auto Zone has sales sometimes with them.
don’t buy parts from auto zone unless you like getting ripped off. use an OE filter and just put new oil around the gasket, it’ll prevent sticking.
Yeah good luck with that the bit stripped on mine and now i had to do this
Looks like a good idea, but corrosion will eat at it and it’s so shallow a 1” wrench will just slip. Tried them on Kohler mower engines and just ended up going back to FRAM.
Remove the plastic shroud to give you room! What would you have done if it just ripped the filter?
Buy a “Safe Jack Talon Oil Filter Tool” for $50 to remove it or have it towed to a shop.
I recommend getting one of those oil filter sockets that fits onto the back of the filter. Your ratchet fits into the back of it so you can get some good torque on it.
I've got like 4 different sizes of those things, but the BRAND NEW filter I'm taking off my john deere has a round end. Those stupid hillbillies over torqued it from the factory!
Doesn’t work, the socket just keeps slipping and doesn’t grip the filter
@@capostrength3908 same its too tight
Not only did I use the socket, but stuffed one of those jar opening pads to provide extra grip. No dice. The screwdriver method worked, but just barely. Was close to shredding it in half.
I used a tool with the 2 closing claws in the filter. It still would not budge. So i bent the claws closer and then turned very gently and came loose.2008 Subaru Impreza.Just wish they put the filter in a better spot to remove.
Nice thats fresh!
That didn’t work for me so I had to buy a “Safe Jack Talon Oil Filter Tool” for $50 to remove my filter. Talon oil filter tool will fit inside the 3 holes of the filter, which then you twist using a socket wrench to remove what remains of the filter. It’s an expensive and time consuming mess. I like your idea better. Not sure why but when I tried screw driver my filter just shredded.
I used a plumbers wrench to clamp down on the filter and then a vice grip wrench to clamp down on the plumbers wrench at a 90 degree angle. Filter comes right out without all the mess of making a hole in the filter.
Tried it. Didn't work lol
Umm!.... the average Joe will not have a plummer's wrench....but he will have a screwdriver and a hammer!
My starter is right next to my oil filter and I'm afraid of hitting it with something, last time I changed my oil I attempted to use my belt and the buckle did hit it...sparks flew
Disconnect the red cable on your battery and there won’t be any sparks.
My issue with this is I have a Jeep and my filter is up top 🔝 don’t want drill particles falling down into the system
Nice 👍 good vid
guys like this is where the term grease monkey comes from. There is a tool that consists of a wide metal C band with a plate that has a 1/2" square hole in it. You use a 1/2" ratchet and crank counter clockwise until the filter snaps loose, a bar on the end of the ratchet helps with the most stubborn ones, (old diesels etc.) In this particular case, if you're like the op and too lazy to remove the plastic guard there on the left, just add an extension to the ratchet and tight spaces won't be a problem.
When you don’t have the tool and you are in the middle of the job and do not want to drive 25 min to buy the tool, this is what you do.
@@23sapper doing it is one thing, teaching others this method is another. If it doesn't work you're left with an oil puddle and stranded car in the driveway. btw if u can fit a drill in there it's not too tight to try other methods..
One of the aspects I have enjoyed over the years with my UA-cam channel are comments like these. Comic relief is healthy for the soul. Have a wonderful day.
Been there!!!
Bad idea...extremely messy. A tool exists called an "oil filter claw". Simply attach the claw and then attach a ratchet on the other end of the tool.
Ya, but I didn’t have time to drive 25 minutes to go buy one.
the claw can damage a filter if it is extremely tight. this screw driver trick is a last resort only and i've used it myself to save a tow truck fee
@@davidwilson3465 The claw can damage the filter but the screwdriver doesn't? Hmmmm okay.
@@myshinobi1987 he's saying BOTH can damage, and they will. I've had stubborn filters before that broke my ratchet cap, then I resorted to this technique. This is last ditch effort right here.
U can also take a hammer and screwdriver but I was looking for a better way since now there's a couple gaping holes in the filter
Wouldn't it be better to drill through the other side of the filter too?
Because of the tight space I couldn’t get the drill all of the way through.
I did that but the filter just split when I was pushing the screw driver what the next step????
Buy another car
I tried this and it just peeled a larger hole in the filter
It’s tricky sometimes
@@23sapper
I went to advance auto, they were surprised too.
She gave me this pair of vice grip like things that crush and dig into the filter. That worked like a charm but they were 20 bucks, so I say the car beat me this time.
Filter was just too thin unfortunately
@@danh9676 I’ve had some pretty tight like that and had to break out the vice scripts.
Shit like this is why I bought a oil cup set for 60 bucks with a nut on the bottom so I can Get in the really tight areas
I love you
Did not work for me
Try our new filter removal tool, the best on the market! ua-cam.com/video/L4qGt4xUqrc/v-deo.html
I have this tight mfking oil filter on my neon idk who the idiot was that made it so tight, its making me want to quit on the whole car
Dirty job. Glad you got it. Couple of things to know. Best to go ahead and poke screwdriver through all the way to get better leverage. Less chance of having to re do the drill trick. Second, use rubber gloves. That burned oil crap is actually bad for you. p.s. do this experiment sometimes; take a used FRAM filter and saw it in half. compare to a quality filter. FRAM is great in their advertising of their products only.
they use paper filters that fall apart
I put 12 bullets in mine and finally came out :)
😂 whatever does the trick!
no bueno...but, it was funny to watch...hahahha
Dude wear gloves!! But thanks you for the video :)
Ya… I’ve now became a glove wearer LOL.
Never seen anything like this before/ oil everywhere: I would of drained oil from the sump plug / oil change’s are so easy not like this though / absolute madness
Bro 😂😂 you really got a rubber oil filter remover??? 💀💀💀💀
You sir need to buy an oil filter wrench!!! Or just a metal strap
Holy shit is that oil dirty
“is” dirty
Little room? Don't make.me laught try a brazilian wv
The music is very high and your voice is very low.
Thanks
Or go buy a 15 dollar adjustable cop remover
Sometimes when you are 30 min from a parts store and short on time you have to improvise.
This was the worst idea ever. I don't use a wrench to tighten my filters on. Always hand tight. This particular change the filter would not come off so here I am trying UA-cam tricks. All it did was put oil all over the filter preventing me from getting any kind of grip and ripping the filter apart voiding any chance of using a filter wrench. Never do this
Probably easier to just buy a new car.
😂😂😂😂. I know, right!
Lol, you have so much room. You are just not very good at car stuff. Don't puncture the oil filter kids.
