There are a number of albums that he was involved in (e.g. Graham Parker's Heat Treatment, Cars, Boomtown Rats) that are great. No idea why any of those should not have been great with another competent producer though.
He may have "enhanced" a number of other artists that I do not care for...he did not succeed to push them onto me, it seems.
I would not put him into the league of the really great producers, unless commercial success is a criterion for it.

I wonder if my fondness for Nickelback as a teen in 2009 had more to do with the crisp robust production and harmonies, and the composition are engineered to be as catchy as possible. I don't really care for random strippers and other cock rock cliches, and all my friends were more into Reggaeton, Emo Pop Punk, Metalcore, or Nu Metal (not that I wasn't) so the lyrics were whatever. The ballads were more relatable since i've always been a romantic person, but Burn It To The Ground i did enjoy. I also loved the song "Misery" by Maroon 5. This was really my introduction to Mutt, though i didnt know until years later about production, real grunge music and Def Leppard.

Love Mutt Lange in the 80s but am not a fan of the 2010s, at least from what I've heard. Dark Horse by Nickelback may well be my least favorite Nickelback album, and there is a lot of competition, somehow he made them even worse. Drones by Muse is a terrible album, took a good band and just sucked the life out. Even You and I by Lady Gaga, great song but really dislike the production, I've heard covers of the song done in a more Elton John style that I like way more.

I would advise you guys to check out “5-7-0-5” from City Boy! The Mutt Lange production is much different than his ‘80’s production. The style of music is very much in line with Queen and 10cc.

🤠 Fine Art of Surfacing was especially fun. Lots of trickery going on there - a funhouse of twists and turns. It's interesting to contrast it to the Tony Visconti-produced Mondo Bongo, which followed, where that whiz-bang production is swapped out with spaciousness and earthy tones. Two different takes on a flexible band.

It looks like I'm going to be The outlier here because, I'm going to choose Dark Horse by Nickelback, not because it's a great album and it's not necessarily a good one either. However, it is important to give context to it because it has clearly influenced the work of Canadian producer Kevin Churcko, who was a protégé of Mutt and you can hear the Mutt Lange influence on a lot of the albums he has produced by bands like Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed. Even Ozzy Osbourne worked with him on a couple of albums and you could say that Kevin is a younger version of Mutt, because of how successful Nickelback was with their own album with him as producer. Otherwise, all of the def Leppard and AC/DC albums Mutt had produced are among his best.

    1) I would have listed Graham Parker and the Rumour's Heat Treatment. Lange's production is leaner and cleaner than what Nick Lowe did before. Compare Graham Parker and the Rumour's 1976 "Fools Gold" with Springsteen's 1978 "Prove It All Night" and ask yourself, Did Springsteen steal the guitar riff? He would sing on Parker's "Endless Night" a couple of years later.
    2) Mutt Lange's production on Foreigner's 4 is muddier that what they had on their earlier albums, especially the first two. Foreigner's early albums are freaking ear candy. They are not cock rock in the mode of Bad Company or Free - they are pastiches of cock rock, just as ELO is a pastiche of Beatles and Hall and Oates is a pastiche of Philly soul. I'm disappointed you're going with Journey over Foreigner.

Listening to this, I'm realizing my three favorite AC/DC albums and three favorite Def Leppard albums were produced by Mutt! Those six albums and Heartbeat City are all perfect or near perfect. Back In Black is PROBABLY my favorite out of those, but also I've listened to it too much. High N Dry is really close to number one. Also, I listened to For Those About To Rock recently, and it's WAY better than I had remembered!

The band's low point for sure. A great band up to that point - and their return in the new millennium is remarkable. But Savage Return is an album to skip...the production did not help, but it may not be the single factor to fail the effort.
