I spent a bunch of money on some Jack Nicholas golf clubs years ago and was quite pissed that even with those clubs, I still couldn't break 100. Ya gotta learn to play.

If people are lonely at Christmas, there are lots of places, shelters, food banks, etc., old people who would appreciate your help, and make your Christmas possibly more meaningful, uplifting, and joyful than any other. Old people are so interesting, with their stories to tell. Bits of history otherwise lost, which could entertain you and be carried on by you. Long term homes are full of criminally lonely folks who have outlived their friends and have been forgotten by family. A visit from a stranger is worth more than gold to them.

I love talking to old people The stories are the best! Some people went through so much more shit than you or i. I'm lucky to work at nursing homes sometimes as an HVAC tech other guys don't like to go there but i always take those calls. I meet the most interesting folks

As someone who uses a Quad Cortex for nearly everything, I will say that most of us common folk are not falling for the BS that our modelers are 'just as good' as the real deal gear. Obviously vintage amps/guitars are a whole different experience. But most of us also can't afford any of the real stuff, so the modelers/plugins/whatever just get you in the ball park for certain situations. I play with in-ears in all of the gigs I've had in the last 5-7 years and haven't used a real tube amp in that long outside of my house. Obviously without in-ears, tube amps are still the best tool for the job. But once you isolate it offstage or in another room and have to play with in-ears it's a whole different game. Again, just the experience of your local average joe. Love these types of videos!

    • @FiftyNinerWinder
      @FiftyNinerWinder 20 годин тому +1

the weight difference alone is what has me rethinking things sometimes...Running real amps is always gonna feel and sound best. But the idea of a Guitar in a gigbag and a small backpack, and cabbing it home at the end of the night vs. driving, finding parking, unloading, reloading, then driving back home tired and unloading gear back into the house... is becoming more and more attractive haha

As a 76 year old guy and a player of some 65 plus years I can assure you that guitar playing readily adapts to one’s strengths and frailties. That in turn leads to new ideas and areas to pursue. Thankfully I’ve found it’s endless as is the love of playing.

Thank you for also hitting the right notes on the gear topic, Larry. I'm 50 now and I came to the conclusion that my gear is actually exceeding my abilities for a few years now. The older I get the more I put focus and effort into my playing instead of lustering about the next nice thing. And it's been nothing but rewarding. If gear starts to matter again, it will be for the right reasons.
Like you said, it's about self honesty. I love and respect that you get to the bottom of things and I suspect that's also the condition that makes you this bad ass guitar player and authentic person you are.
    Right on Larry.

    Dear Uncle Larry,
I just want to say thank you for your videos and your music of course.
It took me a while to get a bigger picture of you when you‘ve started Homeskooling back in 2020 or so.
Meanwhile I can say from the bottom of my heart that I really like you (or at least what you are showing to all of us)
particularly the more sensitive and vulnerable side of you and the inner child which comes out pretty quick when hanging with your friends at Gruhn‘s or in a studio. You’re bringing so much valuable input to my life and I’m sure to many others as well.
Keep on doing whatever you want to do and share what you want to share. Thank you very much, Tom

I am the same age as you and when I was younger, I had tube amps and solid-state amps through my life, and I always liked the tube amps more tone wise but until I started building/designing tube guitar amps I didn't realize just how much. The difference is a deep wide gulf to me. I get that Joe Blow the guy who has been playing guitar for 4 years and everyday people can't tell but there is a feeling you get when you have a basic good quality vintage tube amp and you have it cranked to it's sweet spot. No better feeling in the world!

I enjoyed watching the Packers win. I'm long done with the Christmas stuff. At 70, 3rd marriage, 6 kids , oldest is 50, youngest is 33, I used to get stuff for them all back when I worked, even the 11 grandkids, they're mostly grown up now too. At this point , thankful to be alive after a couple surgeries, cervical spine, and then major stomach surgery in 2023. I was so ill, I couldn't even play to one 4 minute track. Thank God for surgeons that know what they're doing. Merry Christmas to you and your family Tom, rock on

Hey again everyone and Uncle Larry, I just wanted to say at my age, 59, I noticed after a gig or rehearsals my left hand especially seizes up bad. The first time it happened I was driving it scared the hell out of me. My fingers were locked in a bent position, I had to force them apart and message my hand till it finally eased up. Exercise your hands before playing guys big time, especially if your older like myself. Tom Ives thinking those stretches you do while playing those amazing chords probably help you in some way. Anyway, Happy Holidays everyone 👍✌🎸

Hey Tom, as far as newer digital amps, I had a VOX 212 digital amp, the size of an ac30 . I had no illusions about the actual sounds it claimed I had within that one amp. For anyone wondering, I did however love the tone I was able to dial in , and I never used any other settings. It was a great amp, but it wasn't a 69 plexi or a 50's tweed. A couple of the effects were cool, it had a pretty good delay which I did use. Anyway that's my experience with any kind of modern day digital amp.✌👍🎸

I’m of the belief that you need decent gear to succeed.
I was luck that when my oldest
Son started playing I already had great amps and guitars laying around.
If I had to go out a purchase them today, not knowing anything.
Yes I would fall for the sells crap. Just on the price alone.
    Hell a Champ is $900 !
By the way I gave him a Peavey T60 and a Marshall JMC 50 watt combo amp that I bought in the early 80’s and said go for it lol

I especially can't tell the tone differences! And I know its because I'm not good enough, or care enough. That's fine. The feel on this thing is fine enough for me and it stays in tune, enough. We called it “poke” in high school. lol! But seriously…yesterday I played my old Squier Lead I (MiJ) thru a 1982 Peavey Studio Pro using a Zoom Fender DLX REV model….a $400 rig. I was happy.

Love the end rant in this video. I've found some emulations are close but they tend to be on pieces of gear that sound kinda clean. The Distressor plugins I've used are fairly close, but a lot of the amp plugins I've compared to the physical thing aren't really in the ball park. Not sure if its because Distressors are so clean that you only have to mimic the compression happening. Haven't found a plugin replacement for a Vox / Matchless.

Ever try any old Trayors Uncle Larry? Here in N.B. Canada, they pop up from time to time. Got two from the original owners within the last couple years.

My 13 year old grandson was taking a stab at learning how to play. His parents bought him a Squire Strat for Christmas. It was the cheapest one you could buy. A couple months later I asked him how it was going with his guitar playing. He told me he thought there was something wrong with the guitar - so I told him to bring it over the next time he visited and I would have a look at it. He brought it over and I tuned it up then ripped off a couple of my best "Guitar Center" blues riffs and his jaw dropped to the floor. "I NEVER KNEW MY GUITAR COULD SOUND LIKE THAT!" Yep - all it takes is about 30 years of practice.

I’m a 73 year old beginner with a Gretsch single cut Electromatic and a Fender Champion 40 that I run some nice pedals through. To me, and for me, this little rig gives me sounds that I really like hearing. It’s kind of a great comfort to know that to sound better, I just need to buckle down and play. No need to chase gear, just need to chase technique.

Mornin’ Larry. I can relate! I’m an intermediate level player who is just starting to play with others and hoping to play live soon. I’ve been so obsessed with gear. Buying, selling and trading became my hobby… not playing the guitar. It’s been hard to give that up but also refreshing. I now have a tele, a Strat and a tube amp. Coupe of pedals. I’m done trying to sound like SRV or Gilmore because that sure as shit ain’t happening any time soon 😂 I’m now just trying to be me and I’ve been able to focus on playing and learning more now that gear is no longer the drive. Anyways, I appreciate you and your channel. Party on Wayne!

The best thing is that can happen is that you realize that you sound like you! Mimicing another player is hard.
