it's weird. i dont know why people have lost the appreciation for heart warming and magical perfect melodies like this one and stardust and all those great melodies. i want them back
Watching Charlie and Paulette walk off into the distance to the lovely melody that Charlie wrote is the best tonic there is for feeling down. Charlie captured the hearts of his generation with his genius. My late parents were entranced by him. Who could not smile when seeing his artless, comic walk? God bless you, angel Charlie. You touched millions of hearts, who could ask for more?
Same. I was 7 or 8 the first time I saw this movie, and I cried after this ending scene, even if I didn't know why. Many years later, watching the Joker trailer, I had a reminiscence, I came here and... it happened again.
"Smile" is still one of the best songs lyrically and musically ever written that has been covered by so many people like Michael Jackson, and it has touched millions of hearts, and it also has some influence in my own song, "Safe To Smile". (-:
There is such charm in this simple film. And it's something we've struggled to recreate in films for the past 30 years. Chaplin will be remembered forever.
He was a genius!!! Not only, that he was the measure for many, many actors in the world, he also wrote little pieces in music, for example this wonderful song "Smile". Thank you, Charlie.
When I was watching Joker trailer I thought all the time what is this beautiful song? It sounds so familiar. And then I got it. It was from the ending of Modern Times. What a perfect music choice. Smile...
Wonderful clip from a wonderful movie. Chaplin could say more with silence than most modern directors can say with a million words. Thanks for posting.
My favorite song as well. Brilluant movie. Chaplin had the ability to make a person laugh and cry in the same film. His film, "The Kid" is highly recommended.
This was my grandfather's favorite song -so personally moving to me -haven't listened to it since my granpa passed-then Michael J. died and I thought I'd listen again since I heard he loved Chaplin's work and especially "Smile"as well-how I love Chaplin! Missed him very much- BTW,funny thing too, my grandfather's name was Michael also.
I'm so glad Michael Jackson got inspired by this wonderful man and decided to sing this song as one of his tracks on History album. RIP MJ & Mr. Chalpin! You will forever be in our hearts as your legacy live on forever!!
this is quite possibly one of the greatest and most beautiful scenes in movie history. more people my age need to see this and appreciate truely incredible and (emotionally not literally :P) moving ART such as this masterpiece.
This scene, and the poignant, deeply moving last few minutes of his "City Lights". You'll know if you have a heart after watching that final scene as well. 💔🥰
It's so hard to smile when you know that Charlie died at Christmas. And this is the second Christmas without Michael. They were 2 excentric people so missunderstood. They both suffered so much and saved themselves with their art.
Charles was a genius. I truly believe our lives have immeasurably enriched by his time on this planet. May you Rest in Peace Mr Chaplin. Your work here is done, and so much work you did! I have a buddy who is 65 years old whose work on this planet is just beginning. Been a builder all his adult life, now focusing on his career as a singer and composer, he is a tenor with a world class voice, though he is completely unknown at the moment. Please remember his name, Vito Montforte, born in Sicily. I truly believe he will be world famous within a few short years, his voice is like that of Mario Lanza and, he can reach the High Cs like Luciano Pavarotti. With La Fille d' Regiment, he reaches the high Cs 8 times as did Pavarotti. When he sings Ciao Ciao Bambina, I have tears in my eyes, when he sings O Sole Mio, I get goose bumps every time and I have heard him sing this song over 100 times. Thank you for reading my comment.
Happy Birthday to the Master of Comedy Charlie Chaplin! (Apr. 16) My introduction to cinema--the first films I ever owned and the first actor I deeply admired and imitated.
Agreed! Not enough of my generation know about Charlie Chaplin. I'm 12 by the way. And yeah, he was a perfectionist. And I agree with what you said about him being an artist,an actor, and comedian. I also think he was a poet, because his ability to produce things in such a way, he portrayed the characters he played as another person. But he also put himself and his feelings into them as well.
This is the last scenery. I can feel nostalgia from this scenery because I had seen this with my mother in my past. I love the scenery of Charlie Chaplin.
This is how 'Joker 2' needs to end, with Joker giving a heart-warming speech about always keeping a smile on your face even when things seem hopeless, and he and Harley Quinn walking from (or toward?) a flaming Gotham.
I remember charlies movies always as charly is the clumsy traveler lonesome in this world. Sad.... But suddenly, out of the nothing, in the middle of the movie Modern times, a shining light appears that accompanies him and colours his life from that point on. Paulette Goddard. Charlies happy ending. A change in my perception of his destiny. Like an angel that came from the sky to change a poor mans life. Paulette, in this movie, caused me some important feelings, like an answer to a question.... An answer to mine.... I will not forget her for that. Actually both of them. Thanks.
If not for Charles Chaplin, the film industry as we know it would not exist. He was one of the first (though Alice Guy Blache came before him) to combine comedy with pathos. Instead of always being "into the chase" as was Mack Sennett's credo, Chaplin made you care about every character in his films. He wrote, directed, edited, composed the scores, acted, and oversaw every element of the production of all his films. A brilliant visionary. Check out "Limelight". One of his best made in the 50s.
Modern Times can be viewed on many different levels....comedy, drama, political, compassion. What I see is a great deal of love. Nearly 10 years after the advent of talkies, Chaplin decided to make the last Hollywood silent film. And with it he was saying good bye to everything he had known and loved artistically including the little tramp character. That's what I think makes this film especially poignant.
I saw this movie for the first time this year and I have to say that it is truely a piece of art. And thank you charles for writing such a beautiful music. The people should always remember you and what you stood for... "A day without a loughter is a wastes day" (I hope I didn`t quote him wrong :P)
Chaplin was an incredible artist whose concern for the victims of predatory economics shown brightly from every frame of this masterpiece and others he made. The film is amazing and has a perfect ending; incredibly poignant.
The ending of this film is as perfect as the rest; watching them all alone, getting smaller as they walk down that lonely road into the unknown and the camera stays where it is, the pair fading away, bravely into their insecure future, is a fine example of Chaplin's understanding and conveyance of the fragility, beauty and sadness of the lives of ordinary poor people. The film was both a call for change, and a love letter to the ordinary forgotten poor working people whose work helps run the world that turns it's back on them once they are used up.
Chaplin and Jackson. Two men who entertaind us and made us cry and fall to our knees thank you for making us feel that there is a better tomarrow by just making us smile!
The instrumental version of the song is beautiful, but my favorite vocal version is by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, who brought me here. When my childhood crush sings it, it's beautiful and his voice when he sings it, it's so breathtaking! I know that Charlie Chaplin was one of Michael's favorite actors growing up as a child, and I can see why he loved this silent movie actor so much. For a boy who had no childhood in Gary, Indiana, this was an escape for him when he was not performing on stage. In the movie, "Searching For Neverland," the Michael Jackson tribute artist Navi, who plays Michael in the movie, sings it to comfort his children, Prince, Paris, and Blanket during a campout outside Neverland Ranch as they fall asleep in their father's arms. I highly recommend the movie if you're a Michael fan, but that scene is so heartwarming to watch! He doesn't do the whole song, only a snippet of it. Love this song, I may have to watch Modern Times one day but I have Michael and Navi to thank for leading me here.
I'm assuming here, which is to be avoided at all costs.., but in this case the artistic ends justify the means. It seems that you've not heard the earlier original version for whom it was written. You might just have heard of the fella who sang it though; he went by the name of Nat King Cole.
Amo este video, esta actor , esta música... he llorado tanto con este tema...y cuando descubrí que era de C.Chaplin en esta película más...=,( Gran artista y gran canción, siempre recordad sonreir! =)
This song is called smile but it has profound sadness to it.You smile to conquer all the fear and suffering you have been through. Can't find any more auitable music than this very own one composed by the great Charlie Chaplin.
Charles Chaplin. Sólo Charles Chaplin. Enamorada de él y de el cine mudo. ¿Que más puedo decir?. Se esta acabando todo eso, pero como él dijo, me voy con ello. Maravilloso!!!!
Charlie Chaplin, was known as "The King of Tragedy" Because the fine line between comedy and tragedy are so similar. It's like hot water feeling cold, and cold water feeling hot.
Making people laugh and cry (often at the same time) is a rare gift. Chaplin had it in spades and then some. He is - without a doubt - the greatest movie genius of all time. He also wrote most of the scores for his films and had some world hits with them, 'Smile' (by Timi Yuro) being just one of them; 'Love this is my Song' (Petula Clark) another Chaplin tune.
I think the ironic part about this song is that it's about making you smile...except it is one of the only songs I know of that can make me cry... : ).. thank you Charlie Chaplin. Thank you for bringing both comedy and tragedy to a world fast losing it's taste for truly classic material. For that there is always something to smile about.
Fabulous - thank you so much for sharing this. When we were kids, during the 1960's and early 70's mostly, it was a real treat for Dad to set up the projector and play a couple of Charlie Chaplin movies for us. We loved it and will treasure those memories forever. Charlie Chaplin provokes laughter and tears and was truly brilliant.;
I believe the perfect melody of the music made you cry.. the lyrics are the just opposite of music: optimistic! They're prompting you to..Smile! That's the song's title after all! (note: I'm also crying so much too, like you, whenever I hear this divine song.. especially with the marvellous Nat 'King' Cole's rendition, and Westlife's also!!!)
wow... it's really interesting that so many people feel exactly the same about this. I know this film since I'm five or six years old and seeing that there are still enough people who haven't yet let their brains be destroyed by today's trashy popular culture and hold this wonderful film in similar high esteem is really comforting.
it's weird. i dont know why people have lost the appreciation for heart warming and magical perfect melodies like this one and stardust and all those great melodies. i want them back
We can still listen to them. Who cares what the others listen to!
WHATEVER HIS POLITICAL POLICIES WERE, COMMUNIST OR NOT, IF YOU ARE NIT TOUCHED BY HIS FILMS, YOU ARE NOT NORMAL.
Music, writing, acting, producing, and directing by Charlie Chaplin. Is there anything he couldn't do?
being a communist... They throwed him away for that silly acusation... Soo great mockery... He was and is the best!
He apparently couldn't write his music down, so he had someone else do it :)
There something that he could't do: talkie comedy. This film is for me, his masterpiece above all his films (a silent film after all).
@@vidimur1977 I liked his voiced movies as well.
@@vidimur1977 - You forgot The Great Dictator. That was a talkie, and a classic.
Very powerful message. You must fight, but don't be angry to the world and circunstances. Always smile. Chaplin was a genius.
Yes.. have a good attitude in all things, and have patience and endurance for all people xxx
@1:23 The final shot of the silent era is also one of Chaplin's most poignant.
Yes, them going off into the sunset is truly classic!

Charlie Chaplin, i love you. You motivated people to be happy and smile in their life.
It´s great that you lived on earth :DDD
I love Chaplin's film scores, and I think he is one of the best movie composers of all times. Beautiful music.
When I was watching Joker trailer I thought all the time what is this beautiful song? It sounds so familiar. And then I got it. It was from the ending of Modern Times. What a perfect music choice. Smile...
Me too! Joker's background score sounded so familiar! This is so beautiful how a song can remind us of our childhood.
My dad played modern times for me a lot growing up so when I heard it in joker I immediately got chills. Amazing soundtrack and amazing film.
It seems to me that Charlie Chaplin remains one of the greatest geniuses of the last two hundred years. Respect and Honor for Charlie.

Absolute Genius!!! He could do anything, no matter how many times I see and hear this I tear up and get goosebumps 🤷🏻♂️
Wonderful clip from a wonderful movie. Chaplin could say more with silence than most modern directors can say with a million words. Thanks for posting.
They're broken because of unemployment and the Great Depression.
One of the greatest songs of the 20th century.
My favorite song as well. Brilluant movie. Chaplin had the ability to make a person laugh and cry in the same film. His film, "The Kid" is highly recommended.
Peter Haugo Thanks for the recommendation. Will check it out
Watched all his movies
Another suggestion: City Lights. Another Chaplin masterpiece. The ending will break your heart. ♥
One of the best endings in cinema history, it’s so simple but says so much. Charlie Chaplin was an absolute genius.

The genius of the tenderness! You will always smile, Mr. Chaplin, and you make us to smile forever!

Agreed what a talent, what a song, and loved Paulette Goddard in anything she was in. ❤
That final shot @1:27 is one of Chaplin's most famous, and one of the most legendary in movie history because it marks the end of the silent era.
and here we go, alone against an unfair world.
Still relevant
That aged well

Thank you for this comment Greg. It made my day bright and hopeful....
Greg Vinson Greg a beautiful inspiring review from you
I always watch this to cheer me up 🙂
Wow...he was so far ahead of OUR time. Absolutely timeless.
after the JOKER trailer, anyone else?
So nostalgic :)
Yep!

@@JP_TaVeryMuch Yes, and he does a great version!
This is really a classic.
Obviously I came from Joker, but damn does that orchestral score make me cry...
..But the song is wisely called 'Smile', dear friend!
It's hard to try to cry but this song just makes me cry. Not even trying
"Obviously" ..? This is one of the biggest classics in the film history.
I am in a difficult situation now.
This movie, which I watched as a child, encourages me as an adult.
Smile. Even if i cry, i smile. I've told myself.
My favourite song EVER
+krista amandels Know what you mean.
Possibly the greatest scene in the entire history of cinema.
I think only Gone With The Wind has a better ending..... and maybe Casablanca. But that's all.

Charlie Chaplin, was known as "The King of Tragedy" Because the fine line between comedy and tragedy are so similar. It's like hot water feeling cold, and cold water feeling hot.

I love how the music of this song in Joker cuts at the most intense and dramatic part and cuts just before it reaches the happy notes.
Beautiful, a testament to simpler times.
Charlie Chaplin the best comedian and director of the century!
