  • Here is latest lecture in the series of undergraduate lectures that we are making available to give an insight in to life in Oxford Mathematics.
This lecture from Vicky Neale is taken from her First Year Analysis 1 course. The course introduces students to a rigorous definition of convergence, allowing them to develop their previous understanding of sequences and series and to prove key results about convergence, leading on to subsequent Analysis courses addressing continuity, differentiability and integrability of functions.
You can watch many other student lectures via our main Student Lectures playlist (also check out specific student lectures playlists): • Oxford Mathematics Stu...
All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.

I had my 1st year Maths undergrads by Oxford U certified lecturer in 1983 at Trent U Canada. This lecture is much better in presentation better thann attending the lecture hall. The fact that one can rewind and also go somewhere online to go few steps back in order to understand your lecture is MAGIC. Thank you Oxford University and Prof Vicky. May you be given a thousand more lives to help the world.

The way Vicky introduces this concept embarrasses the teaching skills of many of my UG Maths lecturers. Fantastic video!

thank you so much for this explanation. my Analysis lecturer decided that he had fulfilled his teaching requirements by giving us the mathematical definitions for this topic, without any kind of explanation or examples. when students asked questions, he informed us that he didn't have the time for explanations and that we should just take his word for it. for weeks I've been trying to figure this out based on the information he provided, and it has left me frustrated, angry and close to tears.

Firstly, thank you for making a selection of lectures available for free on UA-cam. However, I was wondering why the majority of lectures are not uploaded.
Making lectures available, specifically if it costs a minimal amount, can have numerous benefits for students and those exploring mathematics. Firstly, it provides more educational resources and opportunities for self-study, which can be particularly useful for students who may not have access to traditional classroom-based education or for those who want to supplement their learning. Additionally, lectures by experts in the field can provide in-depth explanations, insights and perspectives that can help deepen understanding and inspire further interest in mathematics. This is particularly significant for individuals who come from disadvantaged schools with teaching that is not as effective or engaging as Oxford lectures. Having access to a wide range of educational materials can also help accommodate different learning styles and pace, as well as provide opportunities for review and reinforcement. Furthermore, making lectures available to a larger audience can also help promote mathematical literacy and understanding in society as a whole.
In conclusion, I think that more lectures should be available if recording is available with minimal cost. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments. We are happy to make some lectures available, but not all because we aren't providing online courses and of course, our students come first and therefore have to have some sense of exclusivity as they do at all universities. But we are putting up more and more lectures to give people an insight in to what we do and what maths more generally offers. It's a balancing act.
