      I am looking into one and have been for a few months. Hot water and heating. The trouble is there isn't any customer reviews to assess its viability. If I can save my gas bill (£700 per year) it will pay for itself quite quickly and then start to pay back the solar installation. I like and understand the concept it's real world use from an user I would like not the manufacturer. Due to the number of sales I may have to be a trail blazer and take the gamble.

    Assuming that sun amps technology gives you 1cycle per day! the system could last 30 years + without reconditioning or replacing. As a renewable its price becomes the factor.

    This is also true for energy production.
    You have a grid to get all the energy sources working together, that makes a higher effective production
    Wind and solar won't do it alone.(only has a few % of the total energy after 2 decades of growth)
    Disconnecting from the grid in-mass would harm it.
    And will not become reality, since only some idealic homes would do it.
    Which is nothing in total energy usage.

    Fuel cells are still using fossil fuels. Natural gas (Methane) is a fossil fuel. Hydrogen almost exclusively comes from Natural gas, a fossil fuel. Hydrogen made from electrolysis of water is about 3 to 4 times less efficient than using the same energy to charge a battery.
    On the other hand, fuel cells powered by natural gas are more efficient when they are used to produce both electricity and heat for water and air. (In large part this is because the normally wasted heat is captured and used for something else.) But that's still using fossil fuels. Solar and wind are better.

      I would ask the question, what is produced from bio-digestion plants? Their natural gas is a product of decay, yes, but not over the period to qualify as a 'Fossil' fuel, I would have thought.
      Also, if surplus solar energy is used to 'crack' water into hydrogen for a fuel cell, that too is not using a fossil fuel.
      Just a thought.

      Good point. Biomass can be Carbon neutral, but it matters where the Carbon in the biomass came from and how it got there. Lots of fossil fuels are used for making fertilizer (and energy to make the fertilizer), crop cultivation, etc. But a majority of Methane used commercially is a fossil fuel that comes from the ground when oil is extracted, etc.
      The problem with using solar energy to do electrolysis of water to get Hydrogen is that the same energy would go 3 to 4 times as far in a battery electric vehicle. Hydrogen from water used in a fuel cell is about the same overall (well to wheels) efficiency as burning fossil fuels in an ICE. It is not an overall improvement in energy efficiency. It is not economically viable, and it's a poor alternative to simply charging a BEV and going 3 to 4 times as far as a fuel cell vehicle on the same overall energy input.
      Improving battery technologies have already made Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles uneconomical, and they were never very practical or cost effective for vehicles to begin with. Fuel cells are excellent in space stations however.
      That said, if electricity and heat must be generated from natural gas (a fossil fuel), then using a fuel cell can be more efficient than other means. But it's still fundamentally using a fossil fuel. Long term, we need to use renewables, not fossil fuels, and the sooner we get there, the better.

    I hoped to be 'enabling the next Tesla'. Musk was in Thailand (where I live) helping get the boys out of the cave - however his minisub was not usable. "Just returned from Cave 3. Mini-sub is ready if needed. It is made of rocket parts & named Wild Boar after kids’ soccer team. Leaving here in case it may be useful in the future. Thailand is so beautiful."
    Thought he might like to make some good use of his time, so I posted "Elon, while in Thailand I invite you to see simplest, least friction, lowest cost EV driveline; handling, packaging & NVH benefits. & less than 1/2 the weight - maybe 1/4 of 3 or S. Ready for testing. Car much lighter too.
    Ideal 4 Tesla 'City Car' - abs least WHr/km. Profit fm day 1!
    Built, ready 4 installation. Nr Pattaya."
    Post was up about 1/2 a day - then got deleted! No contact, no reply - just deleted!
    Can anybody tell me HTF he knew I was lying?

    6:30 Tesla doesn't make it's own batteries??? Does this guy not know about the gigafactory? Sorry but you lost all credibility after that comment

      Milan Shah Panasonic make the Batteries in partnership with Tesla at the gigafactory. So technically they are correct.

      The critical technical innovation that motivated Tesla was the observation that they could take off the shelf laptop batteries (the 18650 cell) and build an EV with them rather than have to develop their own cells. The comment the chap made was exactly correct and an important take away.

    I think Phil Caldwell, is not paying attention to the Tesla factory system much? He said Tesla are buying their batteries from Panasonic. They used to do that! Now they have a Giga Factory producing more batteries than all the worlds other producers combined? So I don't think they need to buy any from Panasonic now, if anything they sell their own to Panasonic and the world as seen by the Tesla battery system being build around the world like the Australian power back battery units in south queens land and the others being built around the world. All from Tesla Giga Factory.

      Panasonic are still involved. As far as I am aware it's a complex relationship where the two companies essentially act as one for the purposes of battery production for Tesla products. Tesla own the factory, Panasonic provides the production methods and know-how; Tesla guarantees to purchase the output.

      The difference between Tesla and other EV manufacturers is, Tesla is working together with Panasonic, it's a alliance, and Tesla built the factory. Other EV makers are only simple customers of li-ion battery producers.

      Life is not a zero sum game. Other companies can exist and innovate in other spheres without impacting your beloved Tesla and Apple...
