Layne was unique but I think that AIC keep being an incredible band. Now it's different but not worst, I think that Duvall sings very well the Layne's songs.
I'm sick of people complaining because "Will is not Layne", of course he's not no one will be like Layne, but Will is a great singer and guitarist on his own right and we should all be happy that Jerry, Sean and Mike decided to move on and keep making great music

I can't believe the amount of ignorance in these comments, and clearly all these "fans" have no clue about the history of Alice In Chains. Duvall's presence is in no way disrespectful to Layne, and people need to realize that the band had nothing but love and respect for Layne. Note that even when the band was inactive due to Layne's addiction, they never kicked him out, never replaced him, and never broke up. They always waited and hoped their brother would recover. It was until years after Layne's death that they decided to move on. That said, bands replace members all the time. This is far from uncommon. But for some reason the kids that grew up with bands from the '90s feel like they have some ownership over the musicians. It has to be the original way or no way at all. So here's a solution: keep listening to those recordings with Layne and ignore the AiC albums with Duvall. You can choose to live in the past if you want, but don't fault the band for wanting to continue creating and sharing their music.
@Nesliii E Holy shit, why do you pretend to be stupid to prove your own belief? Plenty of assholes have been saying shit about Duvall ever since the day he joined.
Props to Alice for continuing to make music with passion, integrity and artistic value. Duval has been a great fit and his commitment to the band is admirable.
I feel bad Duvall catches so much shit, he obviously respected Layne highly along with the other band members. He may not sound exactly like staley but he's still doing a good job. Also the bass is so kickass here.
I noticed on the back of Sean Kinney's kick drum is says "LSMS," and I could be mistaken, but I couldn't help but think of Layne Staley and Mike Starr. Now that said, I don't know drum gear very well, so it could be a brand or something for all I know. If so, that would be quite a coincidence, I think.
Never gonna understand the hate on DuVall, the guy is not bad and everybody knows it. The only thing everyone ever bitches about is that he's not Layne, well no shit he's not Layne, move on, please.
guys sometimes I just wish duvall wasn't in alice in chains and was in another new band or had a solo career because then you would love him while now you hate him. Ok Layne was a LEGEND but Duvall is one of the best singers out there right now and it's a pitty...
JoeyBooey He said his hair was getting really thin and looked like crap. But i'm with you. I think he looks good in 2015. He has the back a little longer.
I always was open to William being in the band. It can be hard to accept someone stepping in to fill the void left by an iconic frontman, but I feel DuVall has done a really fine job, sometimes incredibly good. He clearly gells comfortably with the whole band, has his own style, but fully respects the legacy of the band's sound. Layne was an integral part of the success of Alice in Chains, and his passing will always be honored.
No one hates Duval. They hate what has become of Alice In Chains. What if you lost your dog, and someone replaced him with a substandard substitute? Would you love that dog? Layne was our dog. We loved him. No one can replace that dog. Duval can sing, but he's no replacement for Layne. These songs belonged to Layne. They came from Layne. They are about Layne. Duval needs to write his own songs, about himself. Then maybe we can love him too. But until then....he's just a good singer singing someone else's songs.
Well the fact that this song in particular is about Andy Wood and the fact that Cantrell wrote 90% of the songs doesn't matter? I just saw them last night and they were amazing
Even if Layne was alive today I don't think he will sing with Alice In Chains. I don't think he "Would?" be able to sing again after all these drugs. Layne was one of the best singers in rock/metal history, but DuVall is great in his own way. Layne is not coming back, if you want to live in the past, so be it, but don't throw shit in a man's eyes just because he is not another man. DuVall is great singer he is the best choice for Alice In Chains. Their last 2 albums were fuckin' great.
You aren't wrong, but I definitely prefer Lanye's vocals, and I personally dislike their most recent albums. I'm not trashing DuVall, but I don't think that they sound like Alice in Chains anymore.
That's why in 1996 in the throws of his heroin addiction and extremely frail, Layne sang most of their hits at the taping of MTV unplugged and was still 1000% better than Duvall.
Duval doesn't have the soul, power or depth of Layne. Layne's voice was extremely unique, and there's no way to replace that. I'm sure there are people out there that can mimic it better than Duval, but I won't knock him for that. He's had some big shoes to fill, and there's no way he can do it with his ability. I really like the harmony on the newer AiC stuff. I think if AiC kept to the Cantrell and Duval harmonies, and stop putting Duval in the front by himself it would sound more like AiC.
haschengrube x I don't think he is . Not only because i want Layne back ( i know it's impossible ) but because of his attitude . It somehow makes me wanna punch him in the face .It feels like he can become the brand new Axl Rose about attitudes .
I'm sick of people trying to comparing Layne with Durval, that's so toxic. The band didn't fired Layne, the guy died. Life goes on, AiC goes on. Even in the front of the drum kit there's a "LSMS" (Layne Staley / Mike Starr) to remind everybody that the band always will respect their legacy members.
It's not the same without Layne, but I Love Alice in Chains and they still rock. Just gotta accept it, hating on William won't bring him back. Dude can sing.
AIC was pretty much over before Layne overdosed. Although I miss his amazing voice I think they picked a singer with the same style and kept to their origins. Rough and grungy. I like the old and new.
Old Will is finally starting to find the right sound for AIC. He struggled a bit at the beginning but he's really coming into his own. Props to him for even stepping up to try an keep this music that we all love still alive. This is an incredibly tough song to sing right, many have tried, many have failed. William really nailed it here....don't believe me? Watch Hetfields attempt...or Phil O. It shows how good Layne really was an how good William IS!!! I feel like he channels into Layne for these performances....
Of course nobody can replace our Layne and he’ll always be in our hearts 😢❤️but William is a good vocalist, sings his own style without imitating! Respect such self-sufficient singers! 👍🏻
Agree ! he may not have the thick raspy power Layne's voice had . But he has the vocal range for sure ! people saying he's bad need to watch James Hetfield sing this lol it shows you just how good of a singer Duvall is in comparison .
Duvall definitely not trying to imitate Layne. He simply brings his own magic to AIC. On the one hand, I'm so grateful that AIC are still working together and touring/writing. On the other, Layne was really it for me. He was the soul of that band although Jerry did most of the writing. I miss Layne dearly. Hope he's up there with Chris, Andy, Buckley and Weiland

He's hardly "new".. he's been in the band for 12 years. I loved Layne.. but the hard, cold reality is that he's dead. He ain't coming back. He killed himself with an overdose... I am not saying he intentionally killed himself, but the end result was all the same. I was heartbroken when he passed, but death IS one of the very few ways out of addiction. Everybody tried to help the guy but he was too far gone. And before any sanctimonious asshole tries to get all up in my shit... I grew up with addiction. My dad was a heroin addict and ultimately, HIS addiction killed him.. at the ripe old age of 48, so I have a bit of experience in this area. As for Duvall.. I like him. He's different from Layne bit similar enough that it still sounds like AiC.
USA TODAY has the EXCLUSIVE premiere of Alice in Chains' "Would" from their upcoming #GCSessions performance. Full episode airs Sunday August 3rd at 8PM on ***** Audience Ch. 239.
Sessions - Tonight, watch #GCSessions featuring Alice In Chains at 8pm. Watch "Would" and be sure to watch each week at our new time and date, Sundays at 8pm on DIRECTV's Audience channel 239.
I first heard "Would" on the radio in 1992 when I was just 12 years old. It was a defining moment for me- I didn't know rock music could be so dark and beautiful at the same time. Layne impressed me immediately and I wish he was still around but more important than his voice was the incredible songs. I think the band still sounds incredible and I'm happy that they're still doing what they love. I'm sure they don't give two shits about all the people comparing their band to the "old AiC".
Still sounding great. William has same type soaring vocals like Layne & people that cont. to complain I want to know if they are ok with Brian Johnson singing Bon Scott songs under the name AC/DC. Jerry, Sean & Mike have every right to cont. to honor their friend & music.
Same thing I've wanted to say. I love Bon Scott and I think he was an incredible singer and front man, but Brian came along and did the band justice, and even singing the Bon songs live, he does them justice too, at least 20~ years ago before he got old.
Yes, and that's why I want to remind these self righteous, outraged morons that want to say Jerry, Sean & Mike are doing this for money & disrespecting Layne & all these other insults. AC/DC chose the same path to cont. to honor their friend & music & I'd like to hear them say that about Angus & Malcolm having no right to continue.
I love ACDC top 5 fav band OAT. But when it comes to my #1 favorite band you better believe I am gonna be picky. Listening to current AIC is like drinking Pepsi and then drinking warm piss. It just doesn't work.
Nils Lewis Sound to me like there's a slight lag in whatever effect he has going. He's also playing a little behind the original line in a few parts in the solo with notes sustained longer. Agree that is doesn't sound that great, but Duvall sounds good. Still nice to hear AIC.
electric guitar is synthetic. that's what effects are. But agreed Jerry is lagging behind during the verse for some reason, maybe trouble with the monitors.
Layne sang with/in pain... The only pain in this band now is the pain of Layne's loss. With that said... I'm glad they are at least putting new music out, and I will always still buy anything Jerry seems fit to put out.
This was a great performance of the song. When Layne sang it he made the song penetrate my thoughts and emotions with anguish and ferocity like he was reliving it.
you know the people shitting on the new guy simply because hes not layne just stop it. layne was one of a kind and there will never be another. but Duvoll has a HUGE role to fill. he does a good job so give him a break
Fox Mccloud This is like Chester replacing Scott Weiland in Stone Temple Pilots, Duvall is just playing his part in keeping the Alice In Chains name alive and well ok? Give the current new lead singer a break , jesus ! :) Hes talented in his own right
Thank you for continuing to make great music and carry on your legacy. There will never be another Layne Staley. William is doing a great job. I was lucky enough to see AIC in their heyday and what an experience it was. Breaks my heart but yet also makes me happy anytime I watch vids of the original lineup.
I have been a huge fan of AIC since my high school days in the early 90s and "Dirt" was the very first CD I ever purchased. I have deliberately not listened to the "new" AIC with William Duvall as front man out of loyalty to Layne Staley, but damn I really did myself a disservice. This was phenomenal and if he is worthy enough in the eyes of the band, then he is worthy of the mantle. Glad I gave this version a listen. It's not the original, but it's damned good.
no,he's not Layne, but it's not fair to expect AIC to pack up shop because a member passed away. AC/DC,Queen,The Who,The Beach Boys,The Rolling Stones,Lynyrd Skynyrd,Thin Lizzy, etc all suffered losses, and are still going.
That bass sounds so dirty... love it
Yes it does!
Do you have an idea of what bass he uses? Warwick? Wal?
@@gaberomero127 Spector NS-2

Was this a pun? 😂
Duval is a great singer! he not trying to be like Layne he has his own style of voice.
Jacko Reaper that's what people need to understand. Layne is irreplaceable, DuVall realised that and came with his own style. 😊

Jerry consistently has the best guitar tone I’ve ever heard. It always complements the song perfectly

My dad was a heroin addict and ultimately, HIS addiction killed him.. at the ripe old age of 48, so I have a bit of experience in this area. As for Duvall.. I like him. He's different from Layne bit similar enough that it still sounds like AiC.
All true.
He has a good voice, comparisons are a pain in the ass.
But I also have the right not to like him. Haven't I?
Testamento dog face dog
Love that bass....
Wow...much better than I expected!!!
The audio on guitar Sessions is really good. You can hear every instrument. Rad
Durval is a Great Singer man. The bass is Dirt❤ Jerry continues be a great guitarist and the drums are perfect. This is ALICE IN CHAINS
I think this has become one of my favorite live performances of Would, Will sang it perfectly. Wow.
USA TODAY has the EXCLUSIVE premiere of Alice in Chains' "Would" from their upcoming #GCSessions performance. Full episode airs Sunday August 3rd at 8PM on ***** Audience Ch. 239.
This isn't Alice in Chains - this is just depressing.
Luke MacNeil
You're fuckin' crazy, Lukie-dookie.
Luke MacNeil
o yay another person that thinks alice is a 1 man band....
Do you listen to AC/DC with Brian Johnson?
Luke MacNeil Get with the now. Layne would have been into this.
Excellent. Alice and Chains "Will" continue. Still making great music as well. Thank you.
I'm sure they don't give two shits about all the people comparing their band to the "old AiC".
that bass line hits me just right

yo that step up Duvall makes is so incredibly Layne-like, he embodies Laynes stage presence more than I realized
I fucking knew when I scrolled down there would be hate comments about Duvall xD
***** I don't like his voice and I don't think he suits the band but the constant hate is kind of annoying :P
I scrolled expecting people to love him, coz his voice is so damn good... what is wrong with people..
@@alexilaiho1st I don't know man, some of them have 3 Braincells.
Duval is awesome! I miss Layne as much as anyone, but AIC is crushing it these days. I think Layne would be proud, God rest his soul.
Still sounding great. William has same type soaring vocals like Layne & people that cont. to complain I want to know if they are ok with Brian Johnson singing Bon Scott songs under the name AC/DC. Jerry, Sean & Mike have every right to cont. to honor their friend & music.
you said that beautifully
So glad they are able to play this song live with the new singer! Good job! RIP Layne
Awesome performance :)
Some people aren't diggin this? are you serious? I'm way more impressed than I thought I'd be (and I'm regretting waiting this long to check it out)
It's cool Duvall is wearing glasses like the music video. They probably imagined themselves shooting the music video
I think Will is doing a wonderful job!! Blends with Jerry perfectly. Glad to see that AIC is moving forward!!
LSMS
Hell yeah
Love Layne. Never replaced. This s version was strong! Duvall nailed it!
There is something in the guitar tone I don't like, sounds a bit synthetic or something, awesome Duvall
I agree, As a guitarist my self it is way too distorted
also i gotta say jerrys attack sounds off, i cant put my finger on it. anybody else here it?
Nils Lewis Sound to me like there's a slight lag in whatever effect he has going. He's also playing a little behind the original line in a few parts in the solo with notes sustained longer. Agree that is doesn't sound that great, but Duvall sounds good. Still nice to hear AIC.
Nils Lewis It's kinda harsh, doesn't have thickness
electric guitar is synthetic. that's what effects are. But agreed Jerry is lagging behind during the verse for some reason, maybe trouble with the monitors.
Lane was great! love that they're all keeping their music alive n going!!!!!
DuVall fucking nailed it. Jerry was surprisingly lazy on the guitar front, as was Inez.
Layne sang with/in pain... The only pain in this band now is the pain of Layne's loss. With that said... I'm glad they are at least putting new music out, and I will always still buy anything Jerry seems fit to put out.
Dude, this guy is amazing, even if he isn't layne, he's still just as good.
Tires screech, door opens, get out
Cmon man he’s good but not layne
Just as good , don’t think so
I love DuVall and Layne. RIP Layne and keep going, William!
Jerry's tone is pure Savage
those b and g chords are thick af
:) Hes talented in his own right
sonic jet
where duvall is doing a good job. to me chester just doesn't sit right in stp to me. yeah hes good but there were so many better choices
William Duvall is a badass, perfect addition to carry on Laynes legacy. He never mimics or imitates... He does his thing & fits beautifully 🤘
Voice is fine but sometimes out of tune
The falsetto "ooh's" at the beginning actually sound like Layne. I thought at first this was a much older video.
The next chapter continues. Alice lives on,will always be a fan. Jerry is a genius✌🏾
Duval. Puts his own take on it. But the more I get in AIC. The more I realize no one can come close to Layne Staley
Thank you for continuing to make great music and carry on your legacy. There will never be another Layne Staley. William is doing a great job. I was lucky enough to see AIC in their heyday and what an experience it was. Breaks my heart but yet also makes me happy anytime I watch vids of the original lineup.
Duvall is really good, i like him
I have been a huge fan of AIC since my high school days in the early 90s and "Dirt" was the very first CD I ever purchased.
Right on!
Mike’s bass tone, awesome as always
Layne estaría orgulloso si escuchara esto.
I really love this kind of 90's grunge bands... i really go back to the time that I usually heard those kind of bands, whatever it takes...
