Please everyone, hold your horses. I'm a big fan of Nick Cave. I have physical copies of his albums that I listen to regularly and went to 4 gigs of his (and the Bad Seeds:) ). I'm not debating if he's a great artist. There's no doubt about that. He's an imperfect singer. And that's absolutely okay. His technique is perfectly imperfect. This video has not been made to spite, but to educate. Ask any doctor about head and neck alignment and its long-lasting impacts on the speaking and singing voice. Try the exercise I show in the video and experience the difference yourself. All of that aside though, I’m not asking Nick Cave to change, I acknowledge him as a wonderful artist. Peace.
Thank you, Well Said. What you say in your reaction is perfectly obvious, if anything it shows how perfection of technique is not always the point in many styles of music, but delivery and artistic expression is.
Remember: this is not a “singing excercise” or a competition. Its a personal song by Cave himself . He can sing however he damn we’ll pleases.
Don't forget what This channel is about, then. Her reaction to his singing. She can react ditto.
She's not saying Nick's singing it "wrong" (she even puts "correct" in quotations when she discusses the the technique she teaches), she's breaking down what he's actually doing and is also presenting alternatives, as well as offering her personal opinion of the effectiveness of his technique for vocal students and lay persons. There's no attack on Nick's singing here. In fact, she enjoys it.

I think technical proficiency and polished vocals can be a barrier not so much to storytelling, but to the ability of the voice to carry emotional weight and gravity.
Cave, Dylan, Cohen, Cash, J Mascis... just to name a few. Not many people would call them smooth technical singers, but they have an impact far beyond someone smoothly running the scales divorced from recognizable emotional context.
Oh, I would never agree that technical ability can be a barrier, quite the opposite as you can tell all the stories and channel all the emotions you choose, without technical difficulties getting in the way. All of the singers you mentioned though are true artists with deep meaningful careers. They are not shallow "products" of some of the modern labels, where you can have some singers who have the technical mastery but not much else... I'd always go for the emotions and the artistry, rather than technical mastery.
Always he is a storyteller first. His spoken word .. watch one of his documentaries. Every other sentence I was stopping to admire the beautiful words. He also suffered great loss in recent years. You hear it
He's a spectacular storyteller and artist, there is no doubt about that.
Nick isn’t singing this to be enjoyed, it’s to be felt in the soul.
I'm so, so glad that a vocal coach, finally, reached for Nick Cave. Usually people tend to pick artists with some technically impressive vocals, like Dio or Axl Rose, not that there's something wrong with that, I love them too. But I think artists like Nick Cave or Leonard Cohen have so, so much to give, even if they don't sing in zillion octaves ;)
That being said, could you also reach for another overlooked artist? Blixa Bargeld, I'm sure you know him, if you know Nick. Could you react to Einstürzende Neubauten - Dead Friends, especially live at Elbphilharmonie version? His inhale screams are something I'm interested in and no one was ever able to tell me, how to do something like that :)

nick cave doesn't have a large vocal range or an amazing singing technique. but he has an impressive voice like only few of the so-called "perfect" singers. therefore he's clearly on the same level as bob dylan, leonard cohen or tom waits. oh yeah, and he sits at the piano in this strange posture because he's a very tall man!

Absolutely, there's a difference between being a good singer and being a great artist. Nick Cave is the latter.
The imperfections in his singing DO make the song more beautiful…more human and real.
He is a narrative lyricist, focusing on lyrics and story-his vocals are wide and emotionally felt, but he isn’t singing, he is painting.
I love a lot of the imperfect singers more than the virtuosos. Dylan, Knopfler, Cave, Waits and so on. It often makes it way more interesting and connects and delivers the message and feel. There is nothing more anodyne than the warbling wannabe singers on all of the reality shows like the voice doing karaoke impersonations of art. And to be honest, I can take or leave most auto-tuned modern pop and R&B singers too.
I'm a huge appreciator of Nick Cave myself, but few rock artists have ever been GREAT singers. Notable exceptions of course - Scott Walker, Elisabeth Fraser, Robert Plant, Bowie, and others. Others, decent enough for the form.
I mean even Bowie had his moments where he just did whatever he wanted to vocally lol I notice in live shows he tend to let loose a good bit but I agree there are moments where David was technically brilliant which is Impressive since I don’t think that his goal in life was ever to be a great technical singer by any stretch, Bowie was one of those freaky talented artists who seemed like he could dabble in whatever he wanted to and get reasonably very good at in a small amount of time.
Scott Walker who I also love is as technically proficient as they come though, especially on all his early Scott 1-4 albums and all the Jacques Brel covers, He had, such a strong, rich and efficient Baritone voice :)

I love when proffessionals analysis great singers. They can point out what makes singers unique but why is it so good when they don't follow the rules? I love the imperfections in Cave's singing. And most people love Bob Dylan who sounds like a cat. I also love opera where perfection is the goal.
When he performs this now it’s so more powerful, the emotion of loosing his sons is felt.

IMO this is Nick Caves best song ever, I think the original version has more power somehow. The beauty of this song is it's simplicity and the original version is more simple.
Most of this could be said about Kurt Cobain. He was by all means a shit singer -- bad posture, bad control, terrible strain on his voice to the point of hurting himself. BUT we all know he was awesome. His voice is still unique and powerful to this day. All she was trying to say here is that if you're learning how to sing, you have to start with correct techniques. If you start with bad posture, it will just make it SO much harder to get through those early months and may unmotivate you. My favorite singe is Thom Yorke, and though he has a powerful voice, his technique is also imperfect -- but that's why I love him!
Into My Arms is one of my favorite NC songs. I agree with you that his posture is terrible here. I’d find it difficult to sing like that.
Funny that you mentioned Snape. When I imagined Snape’s parents I saw them as Cave and PJ Harvey.
Yes, it is very difficult to sing in this posture, it puts a massive strain on your voice. OH MY, you got me there; Cave and PJ Harvey could are totally Snape's parents!

Regarding his age and music - you have to check his side project Grinderman ;-) and Cave always was about lyrics and music...
for me Cave is outstanding song writer - he often wrote not just song but small meaningful and intriguing story and also nice music. he has not best voice and he is not best singer but he has own catchy personality and his voice suits him well, way how he portray his songs, often dark and misery as his songs themself. moreover he is really great performer (I was lucky, to get to his show once)
The day you write a song as beautiful as this is the day you can comment. It's not about his voice.. just enjoy the simple yet incredible song.
Wow. That's some gatekeeping there, unilaterally deciding who gets to appreciate Nick and how they do so.
She's not discussing the calibre of the song (which she clearly loves. Notice how she compares this performance to the album version that she knows and compliments the changes he makes live). She is examining his technique, breaking down what he's doing with his body and how that affects his performance, and she demonstrates it herself to illustrate her point.
There's no need to be overly sensitive about a singer and vocal expert analysing an artist you like. It's how open-minded and creative people learn from others' art. I'll take her informed opinion and reaction over blind gushing any day. Cheers.

A surprisingly basic and empty analysis of Cave's singing for a singing tutor. Isn't that a little vocal fry at the beginning to give him an impressive low end? Couldn't he have done with more throughout song?
The only observations given seem trite. Yes, posture is important. Yes, character is often more important than technical perfection - we've seen Presley to Lennon to Bowie.
A singing teacher should have delivered more insight. Felt like a Watch-Along.

nick cave is one of the 5 best live artists and he sings so since i knowing him... you can perhaps bieber, grande, gomez, swift, gaga and the rest of that new novoicebitchesartitsgeneration tell something about their style of singing, but never ever nick cave... if you had only 10% of his talent, then you should kiss god his feets...
If you listen to the reaction carefully, you can actually tell that I am a big Nick Cave fan myself. I've been to his live concerts and admire him as an artist. My point in the video is precisely that you don't need to be a technically perfect singer to be a great artist. I don't care at all about the technique, if a singer moves me emotionally. Nick Cave doesn't fail at it at any time.

For sure, with the mic placed differently. But I believe he has to slouch to caress the piano. And what Nick's ambitions as a singer is, is not relevant in this channel. She's a vocal coach and I'm fond or everyone presenting Nick to new audiences.

Why are vocal coach videos always "His posture is terrible, he's doing everything wrong, but he's singing beautifully. Don't do what he's doing, unless you can sing beautifully of course..."
Just admit that some singers have their own style and not everything has to be proper and correct. Just because somebody likes to sing in a strange posture doesn't mean it's wrong if they're still able to perform their music effectively.
Be sure if you dont follow any of these instructions you will never be Nick Cave. People who can do. People who cant teach.
