  • Clifford Nass gleans powerful strategies to help people build relationships by watching what succeeds and what fails in human interfaces with technology.
In his research at Stanford, Clifford Nass has leveraged people's fundamentally social relationship with computers to develop and test essential rules for effective human relationships. The Thomas M. Storke Professor at Stanford University, Nass is author of The Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships. Nass discovered that people use the same rules and heuristics when interacting with computers, automobiles, cellphones, robots and other interactive technology as they do when interacting with other people. His paper demonstrating that heavy media multitaskers are poor at multitasking was one of the most covered papers in the social sciences in the last 12 months. He has applied his research to over 250 media products and services for companies
including Microsoft, BMW, Time-Warner, Hewlett-Packard and Charles Schwab.

Multitasking is a myth. You can have fast, cheap, or good. And you can possibly have some combination of two of them. But you can't have all three.
Multitasking in the sense of trying to do two things at once that require focus is not possible.

Put captions on, it's that easy. The mic problems aren't even bad.

Too bad for the world we live in today, I barely do face-to-face with anyone anymore. In fact, I'm afraid of doing that and I avoid it as much as possible.

I would only disagree that we are all in our "own" virtual world, we are in a shared virtual world imo. Facebook is a virtual plaza. Twitter is a virtual sticker slap, scrolling walking down the street looking at signs on posts and shit. Instagram is obviously a virtual scrapbook documenting all of the humans that use it. Snapchat is for the NSA lol

*DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME* - He talks about Barney the Dinosaur, then goes on to explain that people who are always on FB, or social media are more depressed, etc. etc. ~And then he shows this chart at:~ 15:36 showing.... it doesn't matter if your presence is 'high online', or 'low online' - your rank is the SAME??? Only face-to-face interaction matters - TOTALLY NEGATING HIS ENTIRE ARGUMENT!! Besides, wtf does this have to do with multitasking?? TED is normally great - but this one SSSUUUCCKKKKSSS!!!!
