When The Light Meter Is Wrong - Mike Browne

  • Cameras can’t think for themselves so sometimes the light meter suggests the wrong exposure. Setting exposure by the lightmeter in manual mode can sometimes be the same as being in Auto. Here’s what to do about it.

    I have doubted my light meter many times on my X-T3 , now I know I’m not insane……….it makes this amateur feel so much better. Thanks , Mike.

      You're welcome @Wilf S 🙏. It's the same with any camera because cameras don't know when something is meant to be dark or bright so they can only 'average' everything. So when your image isn't 'average' it's unlikely you'll get what you want. ... MB

    (Alan Radley) Hi Mike I just had to mention this. I recently sent a link of some photos, to a friend. This was the reply I had.
    "Looks like you had great weather ! Your camera really does take great pictures" It made me laugh, and I immediately
    thought of you.

    Mike thank you....
    Being of a certain age I started life on film using in camera and hand held light meters.
    Watching videos I see the use of histogram being used with exposures either over or under exposed on light meter.
    You have allowed this penny to drop ca-ching...... thank you sir.

    Excellent advice! I’ve argued with my light meter several times lol. But when starting out, everyone tells you to keep that meter on 0. Sometimes you just can’t trust it!

    Same with printing photos, they try to even the exposure but for contrasty pictures they look boring.

      Yep they sure do. It's worthwile calibrating monitor and using a pro lab - or doing it yourself. Though that is a lot of faffing about to calibrate monitor, printer and different papers... MB

    This is why I shoot most of my pictures in manual. But in digital, you can cheat and check the results directly, on film, you need to know.

  • @MJohnson-qp9he

    Mike, when you reduced exposure why did just iso change? When i use exposure comp on my camera only shutter or ap changes. Thanks

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Рік тому

      Hi @M Johnson. It depends on what mode you are in. And (forgive me but I haven't watched this video in many years) if I remember correctly, I changed ISO manually so that the shutter speed would come up a bit when adjusted via exposure compensation. Sorry if that sounds complex, to be honest when choose a shutter or aperture for cretive reasons, the ISO often has to change to allow thos choices. If you're on my Masterclass course, go back through the 2 Exposure sections and repeat the exercises a few times. If not I reccommend you enrol on it because for very little money it will give you confidence in both the camera and your own creativity. MB.. 👍

    In frame one you adjusted aperture and in frame 2 you adjusted ISO, how do you know what to choose in any given situation?
    Thank you.

    • @MikeBrowne
      @MikeBrowne  Рік тому

      In this case it doesn't really matter because aperture won't affect depth of filed at the distance because distance to subject is beyone infinity. It was pretty bright and shutter speed was high enough there was no danger of camera shake so any of the 3 exposure controls could do the job and not affect anything creatively. If you complete my online Masterclass course there are many video tutorials like this one and exercises to give you experience. I guarantee it'll clear any confusion about these kind of issues forever. ... MB
