Never in the annals of time has there been so much interest and excitement in a couple of Allegros. Love hearing from Richard, Mark, Bobbie et al. UA-cam at it's very best.
The Audi is the most modern car I've seen you strip down and you can really see how dramatically more sophisticated panel forming is now compared to the 60's and 70's that most of your cars hail from. Orders of magnitude more complexity (not to mention precision). BTW thanks for cleaning the camera lens in the last 3 vids! There was a lot of flaring and washing out going on recently :)
@@Mr_Spegruyou mean “cow sh1t green” 😂 we love that too and in fact all the renders were done in that colour, it was a late change to harvest gold. If it was my choice the pair would have been harvest gold and antique gold. Never have two colours been more poorly titled 😂
Guys at the risk of ruffling feathers, I would suggest going by the interest in your opening that you are reporting that you will find yourselves under catered. I would suggest you invite in some independent caterers to help out. Things like hog roasts or a really good barbie knocking out top quality beef and venison burgers corn on the cob ect or someone with a huge pot of rice and just as huge pot of curry, ie provision areas that require little space but can tackle large numbers of people, you can be fairly certain for every body that lets you know they are coming there will be at least two more you are unaware of. Water may also be required, not everybody drinks coffee other drinks might help things along. I hope all goes well for your open day, that the sun shines and that the crowds are happy.
Whats going on at 34:29?😂 They used to bury subliminal pictures in The Young Ones back in the 80s! Oh the penny has just dropped Fins in the Grill, very good😅👍🥴
Allegedly when the BL bosses wanted to see the latest new paint colour proposals, some of the younger design team pranksters submitted an NHS chart of all possible colours of human faeces but retitled with romantic names e.g. ‘Obstructed Bile Duct’ was renamed as ‘Harvest Gold’. To their surprise the bosses approved the colours and the rest is history. God bless the British motor industry.
It’s a good story, but the Bristol stool scale wasn’t developed till a couple of decades after ‘Bracken’, ‘Harvest Gold’ and ‘get yourself down the doctor’s *now* Tundra’ came out.
I’m here for MK1 Escorts 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I do like the idea of 3d scanned, 3d printed covers for the rollcage junction. Definitely the first I’ve seen. All I’ll say is make sure they are nylon based. Nylon becomes more flexible with moisture atmospheric moisture. Nylon has variants that are can handle high temperatures(200C+). 🤜🏼🤛🏼😎🍀🇦🇺☮️
I love to see the developing skills of the fab shop guys. Keeping panel beating alive. But Stu is the GOAT. The standard to meet. I owned a Dolomites Sprint in Cinnabar Red. Looks similar. My late sister had a Harvest Gold Allegro. It was, of course, shit.
About mixing up the allegros… I’m curious about the legal identity / VIN a car like this is gettin … the Llegro‘s ? The Honda‘s ? Or are you issuing a retropower VIN and are really a manufacturer ?!
Too modified to retain their original VIN/identity, so they’ll receive a new VIN, and go through an IVA test. The owner can then assign the original reg plate number if they want to have a reg plate that matches the original donors age, rather than one that makes it look brand new (you’re allowed to put older reg/licence plates on cars here).
We had an 1100cc Allegro in that orange colour. Swapped the engine for a 1275 Cooper S engine and box. Extra shocks and harder pads. Simps. A bit simpler conversion than yours. We used to go camping across Europe summer hols. Regular wax oil treatment kept it superb.. That's what you had to do back then. No probs.
Have you considered using a Creaform Laser scanner with linked Coordinate Measurement Probe for the e-type metrology. Accurate to 25 microns and links directly into your CAD drawings. They also make the Peel Scanner you have. Love the work you do.
Other opinions are available. In my experience, Marc is the kind of bloke who, when he eventually moves on, everyone else in the workshop says thank God that guy’s gone.
I still would like a link to a thumbnail with a photo of each car you have done from Gordon Murray car on ! When you mention a car from the past it is hard to remember the particular car , I believe your views would appreciate that ! Kit from down under
Cal, a couple of things hit me; Richard is going to really appreciate the CAD Cave, and with larger scale printers now available, some really sweet work can go from design to hard then soft under your roof. If he would, could we get Richard to take us through some of the task areas in reupholstering a bespoke car? Might be more than one or two episodes. Nat, tell your lads we won't eat them, promise! You have had some great fortune in the talent your shop has attracted. And it looks like the younger get plenty of contact with Stu and Bobbie- I hope they do! I do not know why RetroPower doesn't have more subs- Binky, the on again off again saga of almost a decade now has more- and that is a real miss. Having worked on Allegros that were built with left hand drive, as they came off the ROROs- I wasn't very impressed with the starting point; you shop and explanation actually make it seem not simple but reasonably predictable.
Them Austin's look mint I remember my stepdad learning me to drive in an auto on Southport beach when I was 9 mint memory picnic table on the back of the front seat 😂😂😂 ❤❤
You've got the tartan seats for the Allegro wrong. The tartan has to be carefully judged to allow for the extra fabric that disappears into the tucks on the seat. The tartan pattern should flow perfectly as if uninterupted. To understand what I mean, have a look at the back of a well made kilt vs a cheap nasty one.
How do you work out the pivot point for the height of the A frame to spin the car? The bottom part of the car will be much more heavy due to chassis rails etc. So it doesn’t end up like the Viking boat at blackpool pleasure beach 😅 Cheers.
Why would you think your event at the Den would be small? You have 66.2K subscribers ... I suspect there are a lot more of us who would love to attend, if the distance were not so far (including an ocean). 🙂
The Allegros are cool and the customer must be so pleased the way they are looking, just one question why didn't you flow the sills out to the bottom of body kit or the bottom of the kit down to the sills, otherwise they look awsome 👌
( When Matt was welding up the holes in the Jaguar C rear wing) did he have to use a brass-type lump of metal on the other side to absorb the excess heat? Some advice would be valued…

For the Audi, had they started using boron steel? Your comment about side impact makes sense but also as cabriolet torsional stiffness is an issue. Would be curious as to which is higher strength steel :) sorry but was a crash engineer back in 80’s
A very valid question and one that I had pondered too. My limited investigation suggests it isn’t, but I’m not 100% sure. All spot welds look conventional, there is no laser stir welding on the panels and there is a lot of mig stitching on the panels both sides of the laser weld on the “tailored blank” sections. There is certainly a difference in material composition as each side of the laser weld line has reacted slightly differently to the phosphoric acid, but I don’t think it’s a boron alloy steel

Churchill's interior is stunning. Just another day for the talented team at RetroPower.

No, horribly credible to those of us who can remember the 1970s.
I have a slight preference for the very similar Antique Gold - it's a bit darker. Too late now though!
