    I’m gonna be honest. My family is Japanese and loves plants and are trying to get me into them, I also like bts and I hear namjoon talk about his bonsai trees so I asked mom and now- she’s buying everyone in the family one. I’m so lost on how to care for them 😂 so I’ve been watching videos and reading articles to cultivate some kinda knowledge

      @@grobonsai that’s awesome! Yeah, I’ve wanted one before but didn’t know really if I would be able to let it thrive. Then when I heard him speaking about it, and asked my mom, she started her crusade. She just left to go buy five from the woman down the street 😂 I’ve been ranting to my dad about them for an hour and reading to him the notes I’ve made. I’m very excited! Thank you for this video!

      Read books about it, watch youtube videos to see how the knowledge from the books is practised, dig out some trees that are native and hardy and first learn how to grow and nurse them, not yet how to style them. Before you get the trees check if you can offer them the right conditions to survive in summer's heat and winter's cold.

      Go to a nursery and talk to the owner of that nursery. They are very knowledgeable about how to grow and trim your trees. At the nursery that I go to, if your tree is not doing well, he recommends to leave it with him for a while. Most bonsai nurseries will have classes. I recommend you take them, and they’re mostly pretty inexpensive.

    about how long after buying an indoor bonsai plant should you re-pot it so that the roots can have more room?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  4 роки тому +5

      I like to look how long the water takes to soak into the soil. If it pools up and takes a long time to drain, it will benefit from repotting. Same if the soil doesn’t seem to fully soak it up and is dry again a couple hours after watering. If water soaks in quickly it is ok.

    The man at the nursery told me I didn't need to repot for about another year do I still repot now? I'm not very sure because this is my first bonsai. It's circa 3 or 4 years in a shallow dish/pot wired down into it from around the roots unto the 2 drainage holes. The roots are able to be seen like it's just on top of the soil and he told I should add more to give it nutrients.

My wife initially wanted to buy them just for the fancy vases, thinking the trees were hopeless, but they seem to be doing well the past week or so. Just wondering if I should keep them indoors or outdoors. Outdoors gets into triple digits in the summer with 100% humidity. Average summer temp is high 80s to low 90s. Indoors our AC is always running at about 70°>

    so i got a bonsai as a moving in present, but it looks nothing like any of the ones i've seen so far. it was purchased from some nursery, and from my basic understanding, i would classify it as a commercial bonsai. however, it's literally just two branches and a short stub in the middle. imagine a V shape where the valley of the V has some small bulb popping out of it. I'm unsure if it was bushy before and they trimmed it, or if i need to let it grow bushy and then i can worry about pruning/wiring it up. any advice anyone?

    Does a bonsai tree need direct sunlight?
    Because I keep mine right in front of the window and there's like a thin white see through curtains, sun can shine through it i think (i forgot what you call them)
    And I live in an apartment building and we have balconies so the sun is mostly shining on the balcony cause the balcony roof keeps some of the sun out, so I'm not sure if the bonsai needs direct sunlight

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  3 роки тому

      Net curtains do let some light in, but being already ‘filtered’ through glass and under balcony roof, I suspect the plant won’t get enough light. Is the species hardy in your area? I’m wondering if putting it on the balcony is an option?

    My person opinion is to buy a tree from a garden centre and experiment with it 'or dig one up from the woods in Feb to March
    And pot that up .
    The pots can be made buy drilling holes in a casserole dish with a diamond drill sold on eBay for £8 or
    Wire can be used from old electric cable 🌲

      Regarding nutrients, fertiliser should be used to keep the tree healthy. There are many different types. My preference is for organic since this year. But others prefer chemical, so it’s up to you.

    What is best to do when you notice that the soil maybe stays wet like 2 or 3 days? I have been reading info that some people water their Bonsai daily maybe one time in the morning and one time in the evening. It makes me always doubtful If I am doing something wrong as I make sure that the Soil is always wet. Do I have to let it dry completely and then quickly have it wet again? (I keep it moist but not damp) I also notice the water doesnt really comes out of the drainage holes that quick.
    Thanks in advance!

      It comes down to roots needing a balance of water and oxygen. If the soil is wet it has little oxygen because the air spaces are filled with water. If the soil is dry it has oxygen but no water. So in a pot, the fluctuation in moisture level is very important - it flushed the soil and allows fresh oxygen in as the soil dries. Of course, we don’t want it completely bone dry, but plant dry (hard to explain!). Over time, muddy soil can become compacted and/or the pot becomes full of roots. It makes watering difficult because it doesn’t penetrate the soil well initially, but once it’s wet can take a long time to dry. So, continue watering according to the moisture content - do your best. To remedy, the tree will need to be repotted to replace some or all of the soil. Here is an old but hopefully useful vid, if you can keep the tree healthy until Spring do that, but a careful repot out of season if the health deteriorates

    • @grobonsai

      If you’re happy with the tree and pot it will be fine. Potting soil isn’t ideal for bonsai, it holds too much moisture when wet, dries too slowly, and when dry becomes hard to thoroughly water as it becomes hydrophobic.

    Hello I have bought a Chinese sweet plum bonsai tree from the garden center and they said everytime it feels dry near top of soil fully put it in a bowl of water till bubbles go and leave it for like 10 days and let it dry and do same Process is this ok to do ?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  3 роки тому

      Submerging the pot is a good way to water as it fully saturates the soil, I'm not gonna say it's the best way but it definitely works. It's what I'd recommend in an emergency, like if someone forgot to water and it's wilting badly. I personally prefer using a watering can but if you don't have one or prefer dunking it, go with that.

    Probably the most notoriously difficult plant that you could ever own. I’ve had six attempts at keeping a bonsai. Every one has died within a couple months. I’ve tried every technique and read and studied every book under the sun, not to mention watching videos like this one. Here’s my bonsai tip and it’s the only tip you’ll ever need... save your money and spend it elsewhere. You’d have a far easier time keeping rare tropical fish than you would with a Bonsai tree.

      It’s essential that the tree lives outside, it will suffer and die indoors. Transition it gradually if it has lived indoors for several weeks - avoid freezing temps and strong sun for a couple weeks while it acclimates. If it has only been indoors for a short time, placing it back out in full sun is fine straight away

      It's often sign of water issues, too wet or too dry. If it is not a frost hardy species and perhaps there was a frost? Perhaps pest such as spider mites. It's Fall/autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, is it natural colour changes for that species - so nothing to worry about? I hope that helps.
