+nanalinda4 I would mostly lean towards agreeing with that if you watch the episodes in the span of a couple days. But I think the frustration mostly comes from those who watched the series when it aired on television and would only get one episode of content per week. Considering there are various episodes where literally nothing happens on screen besides Shinji sitting in a goddamn "mind train" to contemplate philosophy with himself, I can see where the frustration comes from. It's a big reason why the Rebuild movies leave those scenes out, going with the "show, don't tell" approach to storytelling that the TV series couldn't financially afford.

And the Grand Finale is led by Rei (=Ayanami of course lol), who was conceptualized as complementary opposite to Asuka and vice versa. At the same time Kensuke is always targetting the cammy to Shinji....I'm just having a heavy hunch that this comcept of "female (mecha) leadership" never really was dropped but rather cunningly disguised...

The end of EVA where everyone started congratulating Shinji is really nice, actually.
The show is more about Shinji battling his depression than what's going on around him.
It begins with a 15 year old boy who's quite insecure and not fond of company because he's afraid that he might hurt them.
He does not like fighting at all, hence why it took him forever to get in the Mech.
Fast Foward to the end where he finally accepted himself and everyone clapped for him, they're clapping for him because he has finally beaten his depression. He has really accepted himself for who he is. The clear blue sky and the fact that everyone's airborne represents the freedom he's experiencing. Free like bird in a clear blue sky. The burden has fallen off his shoulders.
Really, that ending was amazing.

Due to this show I ended up doing a Philosophy degree at University, I absolutely adore the last 3 episodes every year I watch them around new year eve to see how much I have learned or how I can attack the same problem in different ways

Not to mention that the manga adaptation, which was both written and drawn completely by Sadamoto (though obvious the story is basically identical to the series/End of Eva, though presented somewhat differently) is arguably the best version of Evangelion there is.

+Soviet Onion *They're eyecandy*, meant for real fans to really see all the extra detail not available before. People are stupid for expecting them to cover every bit of material from the original series. That being said, overall it's a victory tour of EVA rather than comprehensive stand alone films. I prefer EoE over the rebuilds because EoE had excellent plot progression and took the series to the best point possible at the time. And I LIKE the animation of EoE, it's beautiful and gritty like old school anime movies.

Easily a 10/10 classic anime you have to watch for any level of anime viewer. Really did change my whole outlook on anime with a few real life lessons as well.

I absolutely love Evangelion. There are very very few anime (or shows in general) that have made me feel emotions so human before. When I watched this show, the reactions I had towards characters were almost like I was reacting to a real person. I would feel real happiness, sadness, hatred, etc. Hell, I even liked the freaking weird last 2 episodes.

The ending is absolutely amazing. Anno's message is incredible, and can be applied to many other areas for these "fans" who feel that they deserve a story they've started to enjoy to cater to them. I'm glad Anno doesn't cave to popular opinion, nor even considered much of the fans' griping, and created one of the most unique anime ever made. I actually learned a lot from watching Evangelion, and I'm glad I didn't just ignore it when I heard of its fame and legacy.
Everyone has to watch Evangelion at least ONCE, has been my advice ever since I finished the series.
P.S. The animation still fascinates me. The color, the angels' movements, the cinematography--brilliant and inspiring.
Spike's Spencer's voice reminds me of Gaijin Goomba. I also feel Spike's voice makes things sound interesting and with a welcoming voice.

Oh wow, this is a treat.
I saw Eva at a young age when I really needed it, and it was the dub - mind you, I started with End of Eva which began my whole grimdark phase, and I was 12 - but it was cathartic and I honestly needed something like that at the time. Even today I can't separate Shinji from Spike's performance - not to sell the original Japanese voice cast short, Eva is just something that's precious to me in the format that I originally saw it.
If you're reading this, Spike, thanks for doing such a cool fan thing and I'm looking forward to seeing the 3.33 dub. I still haven't seen the movie, February will be the first time I see it and I'm looking forward to it. Not to be a weird guy or anything, but it does mean a lot to me that you've stuck with the series for as long as you have. Thanks for portraying Shinji.

Leviathon672015 the original TV ending as opposed to eoe? If you want, I have a way of watching the series that blends in both. In ways, it made more sense to me than watching one or the other and is the definitive way how I watch it now.
+Maztuhmind I'd be very interested in such a combo. Some well-thought out combination of two would likely fix any discrepancies between them for maximum content and a complete Evangelion experience. Unfortunately, such a thought hasn't occurred to me and every recommendation on the series I've found has insisted on viewing one or the other. Usually EoE.
Okay, here goes:
Watch episodes 1 - 20 like usual
Watch the director's cut versions of 21 - 24
Then start up eoe and watch it until right before it gets to the part where it shows all the real-life imagery. Roughly around 15 - 18 minutes before it ends.
Then watch episodes 25 & 26 back to back
Then finish the rest of eoe.
Basically, with the original episodes added into eoe, this makes it feel more like a director's cut of the film. The last half of the movie already delves into deep introspection with shinji just like the last two episodes and gives them a lot more meaning.
I wish more Eva fans who said that's it's either one or the other would watch it this way. It might just open their eyes more to them as a whole.
When the series ended and fans started attacking Anno, he probably though “They want an ending, I’ll show them an ending”

It's true, in so much that the Japanese view the Semitic religions as sci-fi/fantasy (and so do I.) However, as Decidium Z has stated, the references aren't just chucked in at random. Anno clearly did research so that it would make sense if you knew about the myths beforehand.

I would love to see a Did You Know Anime of the original Dirty Pair TV series. One of my favorite anime's of all time. But who would you get to do the narration. Dirty Pair was only ever done in Japanese. I really like that you get narrators that were somehow involved in the Anime, like using Spike Spencer for this video. I must say I was really amazed that you got the the actress that played Priss for your Bubblegum Crisis video.
Getting a bit side tracked. Anywho. After I did my in-depth review of Dirty Pair, it really would be great to see a Did You Know Anime of it.

Really, you left out the best part of that Ikuhara interview: he explains how one time while he and Anno were working on Sailor Moon (either Sailor Moon R or S) the crew went to a resort to let off some steam and these two actually had a very intense encounter where Ikuhara admitted that when he was a teen he was certain he would never live to see adulthood and if he did it would only be as an "omake"; that all the teen drama bullshit of school and peers WAS his life and any failure would doom him. He said that being able to open up about his vulnerabilities this way, to recognize that those sorts of insecurities were universal likely influenced Anno's work in the same way it helped to crystalize Ikuhara's views on "bringing the world revolution" as a concept for his own masterpiece Utena.
Did I mention they had this conversation naked in an open air bath after one too many beers? So yeah, Shinji and Kowaru are at least partially based on Anno and Ikuhara, no question.

it does, when I watched this when I was younger I didn't catch it, but Shinji seeing Lilith turn into Kaworu explains alot on how he felt about him, and seeing Maya see Lilith as Ritsuko and Fuyutsuki see Lilith as Yui finally made me notice that Lilith was being kind enough to let everyone who had to dye see the ones they love before they go :'(
