I have the original (2011 I believe) midtown standard w/ bigsby(licensed, factory installed) in red w/57 pups. I switched out the bright white plastics to black and I absolutely love the thing, your 100% right, it's essentially a lespaul. I Picked it up for 890Cdn its the best deal I've gotten on a guitar and they are extremely underrated in my opinion.
In the pickup cavity I see figuring from top to bottom where it meets the Mahogany, so it's definitely a full top, doesn't look like there's a layer of any sort.
Pretty cool guitar. That's a very similar construction style to the Epiphone Alleykat. Main differences are that the Alleykat has an archtop (mine is heavily flamed), and it's routed out under the pickups. It's a weird guitar, but one of my favorites.
I remember these. I was in the market for one back then but couldn't find any with some kind of defect. QC must have been a nightmare. The backs where sanded crooked or paint was flaking off... I found a strap pin in one. It took its time to fall out of the f hole. Regards, Etna.
My church has the midtown custom in the sunburst color way. They added a bigsby and locking straps and she plays BEAUTIFULLY! Considered getting one but I would only add the string butler to have it stay in tune longer
Unrelated question from a metric system viewer. I see at 8:45 he uses a measuring tape that indicates inches at the top and half inches at the bottom (12 inches / 24 half inches). What is this type in measuring tape called? All my Google searches shows measuring tapes with half inch "striped indicators" but not specifically half inch indicators with double the "distance value" of the inches. It seems like he is the only one with such a measuring tape. 😊 I hope my question makes sense.
Gibson must have ordered a few CNC machines, a heap of mahogany & found someone who needed a ton of wood shavings. I’ve made a guitar body this way & the timber wastage is crazy.
Salutations Austin! Really beautiful instrument, and I am sure it is more durable than a standard ES-335 or similar model, and it is a lot easier to work on any of the electronic components too, particularly it you wanted to try different pickups. The finish is absolutely gorgeous, and it sounds fairly decent, the bridge pickup has some serious bite for sure! Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨🎸
Loved the video Trogly, The Root Beer finish is one of my favorites but I have to admit the Ocean Water was stunningly beautiful... I'm a huge fan of green Guitars too That Guitar in a nice dark green would be calling out to me..
Beautiful guitar & sounds killer! Reminds construction-wise of Rickenbacker 330 series being crafted from solid wood, just top routed VS Ric being back-routed and capped off at the back.
Beauty of a guitar Trogly, love the root beer color and the shape of the "horns" if you will are more pointy looking than on say a 335. Good sounding guitar! Nice workmanship too 👍
I have richlite on a cheap Martin but I actually really like it. It looks good and has a different, but nice feel. I wish it was used more nowadays. I dont like the look of the indian laurels or roasted maples personally.
An excellent guitar player friend worked for a Large Retailer. He bought one and was on me constantly. "this is the greatest guitar Gibson has ever made". A year later I saw him at a gig and I said hey where's your 339. He said oh, yeah it was no good. They sound great here. Good one Trog.
These midtown’s are great. I have a standard. The intonation is perfect. And that’s probably one of my favorite gigging guitars, the neck is great and it’s a lot lighter than any of my Les Paul’s so a 3-4 hour gig your lower back isn’t hurting so much lol. And the average person and clubs and bars could care less what Guitar you play.
"Electric Spanish" means an electric guitar with a Spanish shaped neck. You have Spanish or Hawaiian necks, traditionally. It has nothing to do with the body. So, "ES" is just a model designation just like "SG". And just like the SG isn't the only solid body made by Gibson, the ES is only one of many electric Spanish necked guitars made by them as well. As a matter of fact, EVERY electric guitar Gibson currently makes is the Spanish variety. The only electric Hawaiian guitars they made were their lap steels. There may have been a few electric Hawaiian square necks way back when that I'm unaware of, but if they exist they have to be rare as hen's teeth.
I always thought it was how they were played - Hawaiian on your lap & Spanish vertically? That's how Mark Agnesi explained it anyways, back when he used to do Norm's Guitar show & now he's a big wig at Gibson.
@@jubei7259 That's part of it. They are played that way as a result of the shape of their neck. The rounded Spanish neck is meant to be held. The squared Hawaiian is to be laid across the lap. From that, you can say you play a guitar "Spanish style", held up, or "Hawaiian style", on your lap, regardless of neck shape, but the term absolutely comes from the neck shape.
I've got a Custom version (ebony). They are decent guitars, they really are & yeah, I'd definitely say mine sounds more like a LP than it does a 335. The BB1 & BB2's are great pups too. Mine doesn't get played much but only 'coz I've got better guitars. I got it for a bargain £700 though so I can't complain.
Tis a pretty axe, I especially like the P-90 version , I'm curious about the radius of the body compared to an ES-335 & an ES-339 , it looks to be kinda in between in terms of size, even though it is of different construction...Thanks Trog !
I love the cherry sunburst custom better. I have 1981 cherry burst custom les Paul. I love it but getting the original parts from George gruhn I changed out all the black plastic parts pickup rings pick guard poker chip and jack cover to cream like ace frehley and its much prettier to me. And gold control knobs
I don't do it purposely but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who sometimes ends up with the strip that keeps the top from falling backwards on the case. Was thinking ot long ago that maybe Songbird museum could aquire that Gibson sign they had for sale. Maybe it's the lighting but I think I'd call that more a coca cola finish since rootbeer is typically much darker. It would seem to me if I called something deluxe it would be the be all end all of models. I don't hate the speed knobs. I actually bought a set for a project but it I would think that this would have old school witch hats . Nah nah no food around my guitars whether I have rich light boards or not. I know it's a joke but unh unh. I've often wondered how you pick songs for your playing part of the review. Other than if a guitar is a signature or inspired by a group. Anybody know what that song was before he started on the Bob Seger tune ? I've often what a chambered out guitar would sound like in relation to a semi or a hollow body.
I briefly considered getting a Midtown model it would have been the next best thing to having a real 335. That was before I ended up with my current squeeze, the aforementioned 1980 SA-2000 from Yamaha.
This guitar is gorgeous, in the root beer flavor. I’m not being wise but I’d love to know how you can acquire all of these masterpieces. If these are yours how do you store them and in what style guitar vaults ? Mine are but your collection is utterly insane. I hope you have a certified armed security force to guard these beauties 24/7. I love the presentations but the dissecting still unnerves me lol
Watching you play this guitar I’d have a cloth sleeve on my right arm to keep skin oils and perspiration off the body. Do you wipe it down thoroughly including neck and fretboard when finished. ? I’m really kind of weird about my babies. All my family and friends know better than to lay a finger on them. When I croak I warned them not to sell them, I watch all the ghost shows and I’m not going to the light so as to guard them. This is not a joke either ! Do you have a presentation of your collection that we can view ? I’d love to drool lol
I live in Michigan and travel through Ohio to Kentucky every month for work. would you want to review my Tom delonge parts telecaster? It’s quite interesting
Whats the name of that song.... first clean riff you played? I recognize the hell out of it but cant think of the name... I am here humming the vocal melody to my missus but cant think of the name/band
That Midtown is gorgeous. I know you’re a collector and don’t like to modify stuff. But I’d put gold hardware on that thing and play the hell out of it.
Gorgeous Midtown Deluxe! Cue a substantial price increase on the world market due to Trogly's stamp of approval! And now I'm off to watch the earlier video.
Yeah, the first thing that comes to mind is Root Beer !! Beautiful color!!
I have a Midtown Custom that I love. I put Seymour Duncan Alnico IIs in it and an OoP switch.
That's a sweet root beer finish
Saw this comment before I even got into the video, and I'm already turned on. I love root beer
Agreed. Is it an optical illusion or is the bottom “horn” longer than the top one ?
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘

this show continues to improve (been here really early on) and is reaching a professional level in many aspects. really good. never disappointing.
Rootbeer with Breyers Homemade vanilla ice cream binding. I dub her "Sir Float"! She is Rooty Tooty! ❤
I’ve watched a ton of these videos with Trogly demonstrating tones and this might be one of the best sounding instruments on this channel.
Thank you for scoping the insides for us !

Thank you! I love that it’s flat top! Learning every day from you!
Beautiful 😊😊
Sounds as good as it looks. Great score! Guessing that back plate route is structural as well as cosmetic. Damn good riffs btw! 🤙
I remember these. I was in the market for one back then but couldn't find any with some kind of defect. QC must have been a nightmare. The backs where sanded crooked or paint was flaking off... I found a strap pin in one. It took its time to fall out of the f hole.

Kind of reminds me of my left-handed Harley, Benton I like the way it plugs in instead of the front
My church has the midtown custom in the sunburst color way. They added a bigsby and locking straps and she plays BEAUTIFULLY! Considered getting one but I would only add the string butler to have it stay in tune longer
Beautiful guitar sounds nice, too.
Love it, looks a bit like a tiger, or just a cool cat.

I only noticed that now. I would also like to know, I have not seen a measuring tape with those measurements before.
Excellent tones and what a beauty!
I’m not usually a fan of Burstbucker 1 and 2 but that sounds great. Love the top on that also.
Gibson must have ordered a few CNC machines, a heap of mahogany & found someone who needed a ton of wood shavings. I’ve made a guitar body this way & the timber wastage is crazy.
Sounds great
Great A! Now I’m thirsty for Gibson Midtown Deluxe root beer!
It looks and sounds amazing! I bet Page would have a good time with this one.

That's the best looking Mid Town I've ever seen !!!
Beautiful guitar & sounds killer! Reminds construction-wise of Rickenbacker 330 series being crafted from solid wood, just top routed VS Ric being back-routed and capped off at the back.

Trogly's in the house 🏠 😍 🙌 👌 😎 😌.

Root beer finish looks good.
I've got one of these. Mine is a quilt top rootbeer.
Nice! I definitely like the look of this guitar, very choice indeed!!
Nice guitar
Wow!
Well done, you earned a Silver Medal.
Great sounding guitar
beautiful top and it sounds great ,, i would be happy to have this

06:35 what does DSDCO16 mean?
Hey Trogly, what do you know about the Gibson GGC-700?
These midtown’s are great. I have a standard. The intonation is perfect. Nice! I want one!
I always loved the midtown’s. Still not 100% on the richlite fretboards.
I always liked the Midtown, and I'd love to get one, but the price has gone up, so it may be better just to get a 335?

Gibson's early electric were designated ES or EH. Checkout ES150 and EH150 for the most obvious illustration.
@@roypalfrey5694 There they are. That's what I was searching for. Good info.
"Watch Her Strut" eh, Trogley?? That guitar is mighty pretty, might have to shop!

That extra tone screw makes all the difference
Evening all!! We meet again.
The midtown always reminds me of the custom made guitar Trey Anistasio from Phish plays.
My wife thinks the blue one should be swimming pool blue, not ocean.😂
Great looking and sounding guitar. Only gripe would be How can you call it Deluxe or Custom and have a richlight fretboard? It should be ebony.

Use your imagination and change the body shape in your mind to a hollowed out RD. Same color, same trim, same f-holes. I wonder if M2M would do that?😮

Ooooooh, off to check out the kalamazoo vid since I have one.....
I wouldn’t call it a burst killer. But it’s definitely a les Paul killer! Better tone and a hellava lot less than a custom shop les Paul in price.
please do the the kirk's flying v.
I've been waiting for this review!
👍

Looking for an Alpine White or Pelham blue SG standard. Anyone got one?
I’m always taken aback when I hear 40-50 year old riffs from younger players.
That is a very sexy guitar!
quality work as always trogly
