Fun fact: the Inunaki (Howling) Village is a real urban legend in Japan. It says that beyond the old Inunaki tunnel in Fukuoka Prefecture is a hidden village home to aggressive residents who refuse to follow Japan's constitution (hence the sign in the movie) and kill those who enter. A different version mentions the phone booth, which rings every night and curses anyone who answers. The cursed person is transported (or wanders into, I'm not sure) the Howling village, losing control of their body and mind before eventually dying. The part about them eating/mating with dogs is new, but the part about the electric company is based on the REAL Inuaki village, which was evacuated (peacefully) to build a dam in the 80s. The tunnel is also real and the movie was actually filmed there. It's close to the dam where the real village used to be and is said to be one of the most haunted places in Japan due to many murders happening both within and outside of the tunnel, including a man who was tortured and burned to death by youths in 1988. Since the film, it's become a tourist hotspot despite being sealed off with concrete blocks.
A hidden village swallowed by a lake made by a dam, and spirits trapped due to it, reminds me a bit of Fatal Frame II-not sure how common such folklore is in Japan but I thought that was really neat! Movie looks awesome, thank you for sharing this!
Ah yes Fatal Frame. I was going to say it reminded me a bit of Ghost Hound, not as built around horror as it is psychology relating to trauma but still something I like to revisit every few years.
The Inunaki Village urban legend is a real thing. It would be like making a Sleepy Hollow film about the US. It works very well for people familiar with the urban legend (IE people who grew up with it because it is part of their culture). That's probably why Fatal Frame also has an homage to it.
I’ll be honest I love this movie… There’s also a part of me that thinks the village women may have been cursed by the dog SPIRITS rather than you know… Copulating. It’s possible though I guess in weird movies but spirits made sense to me as well in that case. It’s possible all of the villagers carried this curse and so the guy who killed them all wasn’t… technically wrong. This also implies everyone outside of the village had no true knowledge of the villages fate at the hands of the company. Except those like Kenji ofc. Those who knew the term dog killer were old enough to remember I think. That’s probably why the doctor was killed as Ryotaro and his birth mother were descendants of the village. Anyways it’s a weird but interesting concept…
AFAIK this movie is part of a trilogy about folk-lore style movies about cursed villages. The movies seems to be more about the presentation of the atmosphere of each villages and their folk lores than specifically about the horror or scares. Which explains the more story and mystery driven aproach. Will you cover the other two in the futures?
Everytime I see your videos I can't help but notice how you always try to pronounce foreign names properly. Just shows how much respect you have for different cultures!
This is the first movie of a trilogy based on Japanese urban legends about haunted villages, and after watching them I have a same feeling, that the things the director wanted to deliver was not horror, that's why they are not really scary. BTW, if you are interested in not so well-known Japanese horror movies, I have a recommendation here, the 2004 moive Infection, adapted from one episode of the serie Tales of the Unusal. Its plot is quite confusing and creepy.
@@cielargent That's great, i didn't watch those! I love remote / haunted village story cause everything is tenfold scarier when there are no city lights
@@cielargent let me guess, the ox head village is about women uhhh "something something" with a bull? Kinda off topic, there was this NSFW doujin that has that story. No, it does not end happily for the protagonist.

I enjoyed your organization when explaining this video. I actually did watch the movie before and had the same opinion you had. Coming straight for the Wailing, I definitely found Howling Village to be a bit overshadowed. But there is value to watching this movie again as you pointed out. Definitely missed alot of the details you mentioned--especially Akina falling multiple times. I might have blinked during my first viewing lol.

I remember a similar plot on an anime. It was just an episode on this anime but it also dealt with a village that was flooded because of a dam being built in the spirits and that village not being able to rest. The name of the anime is Princess Resurrection.
It's one of the OVA's I've rewatched Princess Resurrection multiple times. Both sub and dub are good, imo. Ohh the OP and ED are reaally good too! Nothing but good reviews from me 👍😬

To be honest, most of the Japan's scary movies are over exaggerated, on a level from creepy to somewhat comedic (as the way you presented your breakdown in this movie). Though, there are also some Japanese horror films, just like Ju-on, Ringu, Noroi, and Dark Water. But as their movies are exaggerated, the way they present a film or story telling is truly terrifying, it just boils down to the way they present it in the film. Hopefully, you'll show us more films and their breakdowns and also your added comedic presentation in that matter.
Ryotaro's father upon feeling the spirit, run to a mirror and proceeds to henshin into Kamen rider Ryuki, while yelling "It's Henshin Time". What a great cameo.
13:13 ngl that scene got me stumbled 😂 😂😂😂 thats the only time i laugh so much in this movie.. anyway i love the cinematic color in this one it's really heavy and give off eerie vibe also i think they are using mist filter? everything looks super soft and bloomy ( like lights are pretty much bloom )
If you liked this one, you should do one on Suicide Village Forest… the storyline for Howling Village was better imo but SVF had better creepy scenes. I liked the Guillermo Del Toro Pan’s Labyrinth style look for one of the scenes. You’ll see what I mean. Also watch Tag Along 2 (creepy scenes but cheesy bad CGI) lol
I don’t know if you’re still looking for suggestions for this series, but have you ever heard of the J-horror film Reincarnation? It’s a part of the J-horror Theater series that includes Infection, Premonition, and The Sylvian Experiments. I came here by clicking on the link at the end of Ox-Head Village. Ever since The Ring, I've realized that Japan and South Korea are great horror movie makers. I just feel that it's a pity that it's subtitled and not dubbed. There seem to be so many good movies out there but unfortunately my eyes can't focus fast enough to read subtitles (kind of like having dyslexia). So I'm confined to English, Spanish and Dutch. I've also watch an Italian war movie because with my knowledge of Spanish and the fact that there aren't that many real serious conversations in that movie it was fairly doable. However, if I have to read subtitles I'm doing only that and I can't actually watch the movie. I'm glad that they made an American version of the Ring, but dubbing the original would have been just as good. I think that they would also reach a much broader audience if they were released dubbed.
Small little correction: The year of release in the title says 2021 but that’s just when it had released in the US. Howling Village actually originally released on October 10th 2019 at the Pingyao Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon International Film Festival in China and then released in Japan on February 7th 2020, it later was released on streaming services and Blu Ray in the United States on August 17th 2021. So it technically counts as a 2019 horror movie. Just thought I’d mention that 😅

The entire chain of tragedies started with her being dumb and stubborn.

I suppose it would be a lot scarier if the viewer was Japanese and knew about the urban legends. But it was a decent family drama if you think about it. I totally rooted for Maya and Kenji and just wished that Kanade allowed Maya one final embrace with her daughter, and for Maya to give up her baby peacefully. That would have allowed Yuna to maybe walk away with his siblings or have his tragic end with the other person he related to, Akina, the mother of his unborn child. I must have been asleep though, I totally missed that this was a Takashi Shimizu film.
