  • I recently found myself in the enviable position of spending time with Gareth Morewood, my go to source of advice for all things SEND as we were both speaking at the same event in Dubai. We made a couple of videos together including this one, where Gareth turned the tables and interviewed me about my autism diagnosis, how I feel about it and how the diagnosis changed my treatment for anorexia nervosa.
I hope you find the conversation interesting! You can find Gareth at www.gdmorewood.com and he tweets @gdmorewood - / gdmorewood

Yes! We were very lucky to be out in Dubai speaking at a conference - I'd never been before. It felt like being in a giant theme park; a quite remarkable place.

Thank you so much for posting this. My daughter is 16 and has been struggling with anorexia for 2 years now. She has recently been diagnosed with autism but CAMHS say her treatment will not differ because of her diagnosis. The family therapy they offer isn’t working for her and they describe her as “one of the most difficult cases they’ve ever had”. She did regain some weight last year but has relapsed and there is talk of sectioning her. I’m desperate to get her the right help but honestly don’t know where to start! As you say, this is such a young science and therefore there is little help on offer. I’m so pleased that you are doing so well. Thank you again for posting such a useful video.

Wow, great video thankyou! It was an eating disorder specialist who first suggested my 15 year old may be autistic after we ended up at an assessment for an eating disorder. Unfortunately Camhs then discharged her as they said it wasn't a mental health issue, but in the meantime she was diagnosed with autism. I fought for her to get ed support and a year later we finally got access to the specialist ed service with a psychologist who seems to understand autism. I am really glad my daughter is diagnosed as it explains a lot about the ed and helps her to accept her social issues and appreciate her strengths.

I"m sorry it's been a longer and more convoluted path than we'd have liked but I'm so glad to hear that your daughter is getting the tailored support she needs now. I think this is a comorbidity whose treatment will be revolutionised in the coming decade, it's just starting to gain some traction.

Very interesting, so much packed into 16 minutes. Will definitely watch again to pick up more points. I think it shows that everyone is different and the more we learn about each other the better we can start to understand ourselves.

It was really interesting to chat with Gareth about it. I've not really stopped to think about a lot of this and it was really good just to pause and reflect...

First time I've heard of your diagnosis Pooky. I think it would have 'knocked me for six' but you're dealing with it in an amazing fashion. Don't think I'm expressing myself very well so I'll just say what I've said before Pooky, you're a SUPERSTAR!!
