Coming from playing this at 4K ultra 60fps I must say I am still impressed by this port. It took about 10 minutes to adjust to the lower quality and frame rate but after that I was never once bothered or deterred by anything. When you take in consideration that this is the same Doom as PC running on a tablet basically then you realize that the game is technical achievement and is fantastic!
I'm going to have to agree. I'm also coming from playing this on PC, and the only reason I see myself going back is to play in some user created maps with friends occasionally.
BlankManTM I mostly play in portable mode. The only games I really play on the 📺 are NBA 2k18 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. If I’d have to put a number on it it’s prob 70/30 portable mode.
Justin Millard it has dipped in frame rate a handful of times but as long as you have the motion blur setting on, it looks and plays super smooth and most of the people I let try it thought it was running at 60fps and were blown away that it was even running at all on such a small device 😂
2017 will be remembered for a great deal of things, but most importantly as the year when it was finally possible to play Doom and Splatoon on the same system.
I bet Panic Button is the type of "up to the challenge" kind of people. Bethesta was probs like "Okay guys, what will you try and port over to Switch?" "Doom" "Wait seriously!?" and as soon as this porting was gone and done, they were probably asked again, this time saying Wolfenstein 2. And I believe in them, they can do it! If they can port Doom, they can do anything :D
Mathias Arends Hansen I totally agree! They are also doing the rocket league port for Switch. I really believe they can port anything onto the Switch, and the more they do it the better they get at porting over to the Switch:D I’m sure companies will continue to come to them for port requests especially after DOOM
Wolf II is going to have to be gimped far more than Doom to run at all smoothly on switch. Even a mid level PC able to run doom at high settings struggles to run Wolf II at its lowest settings. 30fps is a given, but the texture and effects will have to be even more scaled down to work on switch. That's not to say its not going to be playable, but if you can get Wolf II on a PS4Pro or Xbox One X as I've played it, you'd probably be better off to play it there without the compromises it will need on switch to get a washed out fuzzy experience.
Mikey C something wrong with your PC than. The PS4 and Xbone run Wolf 2 perfectly well at good settings. So a PC should have no issues. Neither will the Switch.
I think with this game I finally understand why the Switch is so exciting for so many people. Most of the time you'd have a console version and then a handheld version of a game, but with the Switch, you're playing full fledged console games on a handheld device and I don't know why I didn't realize this before. I never thought I would be able to play Doom on my bus ride, a game that I played on a stationary, not a bit portable PC. Shit, this port alone made think about a Switch, where before, I've had completely dismissed it. Just the thought of playing even previous gen games on the go makes me pretty excited.
There's a really good Nintendo-centric UA-camr named Arlo who has a video titled "The Nintendo Switch's Unique Opportunity" that goes into this very subject: how awesome for Switch owners and the Switch itself it would be if all the big last-gen games got ported to it so you could play the likes of _Mass Effect_ or _Arkham City_ on the go. Give it a look!
Just to note, when I say this is the "complete game" I'm talking about the campaign specifically. The maps are all there and complete. If you look beyond that, however, the Switch version lacks Snap Map which means no custom maps.
Shibby I could swear that I heard in some vid that numbers are identical. It may have been this vid. Or maybe IGN's review. Not sure. It's easy to miss if you'rent listening carefully enough.
Of course, even in Docked Mode, it's not terrible. Aside from real-time reflections, it manages to retain all of the effects of the other versions. If you can deal with it looking blurrier, it's still a beautiful looking game.
I would prefer a lower resolution for a stable framerate even if it's 30fps. Playing doom with drops to 22 fps in every bigger fight is absolutely a no go.
+ fcukugimmeausername Wow. Your grammar is good. But can't you forgive people for using the wrong preposition? It's not like that english is the native language of everyone..
I have never owned a Nintendo console and mainly play on my gaming PC. Recently I bought a Switch and wasn't sure what to expect? I am very suprised how well it works and very happy with it. The fact I am able to use it on the go anywhere is amazing! I am really happy games like this is even possible on the Switch. I can see a lot of third party developers bringing more games :)
Infinity Dave yeah, same. It’s a super exciting little system. I was in shock all day yesterday when playing DOOM on it at my favorite cafe.. I was sort of laughing and in disbelief ”how is this game possible right now?!” And having the best time, and a couple of other regulars at the cafe sat next to me also being mind blown and the excitement seemed to catching, they also spoke about how they want a Switch as soon as they can afford one. I feel like it’s been a while since I’ve felt this level of Nintendo magic, and I love that the third parties are coming in now and adding to it:) almost makes me cry even that the old Nintendo days seem to coming back, the 3rd parties are back and Nintendo is once again doing well:’) kind of awesome. And for PC gamers who get to experience everything at the highest quality the Switch is the perfect portable companion and with awesome exclusives.
Psyblader501 I agree there are some great games on Switch. Still I like that I can play Doom on the go. I can't carry my pc and monitor around with me sadly :p
Psyblader501 And you can carry gaming PC around? I suppose there are gaming laptops, but how practical are those,at 5x-10x the price of Switch? You need a table or something to comfortably use it. And then basically becomes a desktop PC. Doom Switch looks AMAZING for a tablet-like device. A tablet with proper physical controls.
darsirious yeah same here, and it’s still super exciting and fun playing it on the Switch... was kind of mind blown playing it at my favorite cate yesterday:D
No kidding. I'm a huge fan of Nintendo and the Switch, and I obviously had my doubts about this portjob. I knew the resolution would be lower and blurrier, I knew the framerate would be cut in half or more, I knew the joycon sticks would be a subpar method of aiming...but it's still fun. It's still Doom. It's pretty great. I know not every modern game is released with such a scalable engine as idtech 6, but I want more of this.
The people complaining about 612p on a 720p screen had better be playing on PC with a locked 1080p+ resolution 24/7 because consoles do the exact same shit.
The game itself isn't even that demanding. I wanna see the downgrades to Wolfenstein 2, that game has some big frame drops and looks a lot better than DOOM.
I've got tons of friends that are dying to play this game on the Switch even though they already own it on PC or PS4. We always knew that there would be sacrificing for large AAA games to run on the Switch but the fact that it actually does work this well is impressive...most impressive. This makes me even more excited about the port of Rocket League by Panic Button as they seem to have a good grasp on how to make games work within the Switch's architecture.
Lycon Xero I think they can even improve it a little more , like they can reduce even more the texture on very demanding areas and make it run a smoth 30 fps
Lycon Xero I can't wait to play it, this looks awesome and I haven't played DOOM yet just a demo but I like DOOM and this looks like a good place to play, for me at least
If I had to guess... I would say you are lying. I am a Switch owner and I'm not "dying" to play this game on Switch. I am curious, but I will in no way shell out actual money to play this garbage port.
JHDK mine too! Doom to me is incredible on Switch, mind blowing to play it on the go! (Played the other versions as well)... and I also love playing it with the pro controller when docked, it’s as if the pro controller was made for DOOM. I love all the versions of DOOM, and the Switch version is the portable fantasy come true version for me
5persondude me too, can’t wait! I absolutely loved LA Noire, being a fan of old film noir movies and murder mysteries, stuff like ace attorney. And the Switch seems to be more and more exciting each month! Can’t believe we get LA Noire, Skyrim and Resident Evil revelations 1 & 2 still this month and next month Xenoblade Chronibles 2 (chronicles x was a masterpiece)
Carl Orell Here’s my problem when people complain about the switch’s battery life 1. Power banks exist 2. get a switch car charger or cars like mine already have house plugs inside it 3. If you are going by plane, train, etc.. then there’s a good chance they have plugs as well 4. Airports have plugs if you are waiting for a flight
Honestly... Not bad for a portable device. I expected stuff to be missing. Years ago guys, having 3D games like this in your backpack wasn't a thing, and it kind of still isn't, but this really is impressive considering that the switch is a portable console.
At the end of the day it does not matter. No other portal device on the market can run this game like the Switch and have the gameplay intact. If you want to play the best looking Doom then play it on PC and if you want to play Doom anywhere on the go then get the Switch version.
Nick Mack There is only one flaw to this version of the game besides missing snapmap, and thats the price, 60 bucks for a game that you can get else where for like 30 or less is a pretty steep buy
I haven't had any slow down problems at all even online game play. The only way way I noticed the graphics is a direct comparison like one UA-cam videos. If you are just playing normally you don't really seem to notice it all. At least not for me any ways. It's an excellent port it plays just the way you want it to.
Aulty Ault DOOM is Very linear, this Switch version it's on par with Killzone mercenaries GRAPHICS so I don't see it as that impressive, now if Witcher 3 was running on the SWITCH that would be the feat of a lifetime.
Mordecai R Lmfao, no, just no, Kill Zone Mercenaries looks like a sub PS3 era game at best, it looks good because is played on a small OLED, it's a technical achievement on its own, but if you come here saying that Mercenaries look as good as DOOM Switch, then you're either trolling (lame trolling) or you need glasses, stop making yourself look silly.
DOOM is linear?? Mercenaries looks better? I beg you pardon? Dude, have you even played the new DOOM once? No, you have not, idiot. It has the same free-roaming architecture as always (besides DOOM3) and improved on it. You realize that there are people on this planet who played that game last year, yes? Stop trolling or be a man and say that with your real name.
+Mordecai R One of the best looking games of _all 2016_ with a non-linear level layout almost reminiscent of Metroid is a "Linear shooter with the graphics of a Vita game." The amount of bullshit here is almost too much to handle.
It’s ridiculous how people think because they have a pc that consoles are uder garbage. I have a pc and obviously love it (I7, gtx 1080, and 16gb of ram) i crank everything to ultra and have no problems. I also appreciate consoles and have a switch and ps4 and enjoy the different experiences each provide. It’s ridiculous to argue over pc and consoles. It doesn’t matter what platform you’re on or if you have more than one
Dimitrelos300 that wasn’t the point. The point was it’s ridiculous how most people on the internet feel like they need an allegiance to one gaming area and they can’t appreciate what other people enjoy. Whatever you can play on is fine, it doesn’t matter if you have spare money to waste or not
What I've found hilarious is that as soon as PS4 fanboys all heard about the One X (scorpio) they all started claiming they had beastly $3500 PCs and so the X was clearly a waste of money haha Such a fuckle bunch of fanboys I have never seen. And they can, and should, all be utterly ignored. Play where you want on what you want, but don't damage control clear and obvious flaws when they are plain for all to see.
Umm. I have a PC... It has a Ryzen 3 1200 and an RX 570... I also have a Switch. However without a doubt my PC will make any Xbox One look like a Brick on the street.
The main thought that pops into my head when I first saw this video was "is it worth it"? I don't reckon the Switch is garbage in regards to being a portable console, but I do find it lacking. The fact they managed to put DOOM on a little machine like that is impressive, but the bad frame pacing and the overall framerate itself gives me a headache. Maybe because it's a fucking hot day over here and that's probably the main cause of my headache, but watching the Switch struggle did contribute to it. Don't get me wrong, it does shine in a few areas but you can do a bit better with the $470AU you can spend here. I will agree though, there is a fuck tonne of children mindlessly insulting platforms for no exact reason other than being loyal to a particular company or because they are a part of the "PCMR". A lot of people actually explain their criticisms about consoles in a "somewhat" respectable manner, but how loud the toxic part of DF's comment sections can be, it kinda overshadows that a little bit.
I’d say that one of the biggest problems that it’s facing at the moment is the fact that it costs far more than other versions. In Australia it’s between $70 to $80 on switch, whereas you can get it between $20 to $40 dollars on other consoles and pc. If it were priced comparatively then it would be an easier buy for me, but I just can justify spending almost double the money for a version that runs at half the frame rate. I think that it’s only a good buy for people who don’t have any other means of playing it, or people who desperately need to play doom portably. Not knocking playing it portably, I just don’t personally find that a good enough reason to buy it myself.
That is the roadblock between me and any Switch games. I already have Mario Kart 8 for Wii U -- I'm not spending another £50 to have it again... Sonic Mania at £15, though, was an obvious buy.
But isn't all the DLC free now? I'm in the same boat I can't justify spending $60 when I can get the ps4 version for like 25. Even though I'd rather buy this version
i picked up my copy yesterday, popped it in my switch, loaded the first level. had 0 updates installed and i somehow had an option to increase FOV. i brought it home and updated and lost the FOV option.
i dont know how you can break FOV without breaking the camera but if it was removed, it was most likely more due to performance (wider FOV=more things needing to be renderered)
I would've preferred 60fps, but I do agree I was impressed. Graphically, I think it looks comparable enough to its competitors. Not as much of a gap this time around. Though, that's not counting the Pro and Scorpio.
I love how Nintendo has tricked people into congratulating them LMAOO!! Just release an unbelievably underwhelming console from the get go and anything they manage to get running on is it some kind of achievement?! It's 2017, maybe not release such weak hardware to begin with? Keep praising them though, the wool has been drawn so far over these idiots' eyes
joe rhodes I get what youre saying but this isnt the same 'praise it even tho its weak' like the wii U. The Wii U was a console yet it was behind in ps4 and xbox one. The switch is tenth the size of the ps4 and weighs 10 times less. And its still more powerfull than the Wii U and closer to the xbox one (which ran this game at an adaptive resolution which could hit 720p with framedrops into the 40's) So yes the switch is impressive given its size, I cant wait for the future because the gap between console and handheld will only grow smaller thanks to the Switch
Nobody expected the switch version to be better than any other versions in terms of visuals .... but before it was announced for switch nobody expected to play this game on a portable console! The most important question for me when it comes to video games is am I having fun? Resolution and technical stuff doesn't impact the fun for me but I know it does for certain people.
The game drops to 20 FPS in fights and it even slows down in the process. The guy even recommends playing the game at lower difficulty to reduce the number of enemies, to make the game run better. When this "technical stuff" influences the actual gameplay that is when I draw the line, IMO games should not be released in this state.
I understand your point of view but I remember playing games on snes, ps1, ps2, dreamcast ect that had huge slow down when there were explosions or too many things happening and It didn't bother me at all. I didn't even know what fps was and I just thought it was part of the game. Ikaruga is my favorite shmup of all time and when you defeat a boss the final explosion gives you around 10 fps and I love it :P maybe it's just me but I don't mind it at all.
AntonioR Software really? I've played for 10 hours and have seen 2 noticeable drops on the second difficulty level. I don't care if the game is 30, I just don't like drops, and so far I have been pleasantly surprised.
*See's DOOM @ 720P/30 FPS* Pffftttt that sucks!!! *See's DOOM on a portable device* HELL YES!!!! Seriously, if you're not impressed with this, something is wrong with you. DOOM was never meant for a portable console, and yet... here we are... and it is GLORIOUS!!!
Your comment just shows the hypocrisy from switch users really. Im not hating on the switch but this just shows that regardless of the poor quality in comparison to other devices, it will still be good because someone uses the word "portability" The device still does well though.
Nintendrones hate on games they don't get and when they do but at a lower res and framerate they praise the hell out of it despite being the worst version of it. (But muh portibility, nah no one leaves the house with the switch)
@@tomianz-1242 battery life will be an issue too on the decks and ROG ally type of PC handheld. The Switch 2 will likely aim for that kind of fidelity and then some at a smaller form factor and 2-3x the battery life.
It would have been nice if DF pointed out this version is running on a hardware that only uses 1/10th the electricity the PS4 is using. The graphics per watt difference is what makes this version really impressive and a remarkable achievement.
Are you talking about OG PS4? Because PS4 slim need half the power. Consoles in general are very good with power consumption thanks to optimization because they achieve much more with the same hardware.
I don't see DOOM 2016 running on the 360, it couldn't even run a faithful port of DOOM 3 without cutting out features or making the map smaller. The Launch 360 is over 150 watts and the launch XB 1 is over 100 watts. And your point about graphics to watt efficiency is? Are you saying the XB1 and 360 is more "power efficient" than a Switch?
When the thing is limited to only 4GB of shared RAM/VRAM, part of which is always occupied by the OS, specially texture quality is naturally going to have to be cut down when you port over a game built for consoles with twice the memory.
this game looks pretty dang decent for 4GB of ram just imagine 6GB of ram if that end up making it xbox one level and ps4 level god damn with that 1080p 60fps
RAM does not Increase FPS. Its more of a stabilizer Certain games have requirements and Doom requires 8gb of Ram This is a technological feat none the less because of how this game is still able to run especially using 15W My PC uses 650W and still can't maintain a steady 60FPS... Although settings are maxed out and resolution is at 1440p ;P
It was probably necessary to avoid having to cut levels in half, which probably would have been a more glaring omission. Not to mention, it would have taken a lot more time and cost a lot more to do.
Actually, the issue is a bit more muddy than you think. Yes, some texture compression would have to be used, but not to the extent you think it might. The Switch has 4GB of RAM, compared to the PS4's and XO's 8GB. However, all three take up a portion of the RAM for system use. PS4 and XO take up around 3GB each, while the Switch either takes up 1GB or less. Put like that, the Switch isn't that far behind, with at least 3GB of shared RAM available vs 5GB on the others. With lower-quality textures and simplified level geometry (abusing LoD assets, for instance), you probably could fit most PS4 games on Switch in terms of memory consumption if you optimized it correctly.
Been playing on PC at home with full settings etc. I had a go on my friends switch and got to say I was impressed. What I played played well, at times I even forgot that I was not playing the PC version.
This is absolutely fantastic. When they first announced it my jaw dropped. Glad to see they really went out of their way to keep the smooth gameplay, that's the pinnacle of any premier Doom experience.
Skyrim is soon to be 7 years old mate. You can run it right now for basically free (get a key for a $ or something) on pretty much any PC built after 2010.
Marcel Krebs I actually have it on PC. I just want to experience it on switch with portablility and such. Some people aren't into that tho so it makes sense
very impressed with this port after playing it myself. After seeing the quality of this port, there is really no excuse for third parties to bring their games to the switch (unless the switch suddenly flops but that seems highly unlikely)
TheConst4nt the performance drops in this game are situational, and the frame pacing could eventually be patched out. The downgraded graphics are not very noticeable while playing the game. Seeing still images will obviously show it, but while everything is moving it’s hard to tell. I️m sure with time and persistence developers will be able to put open world games on the switch. Hell gta V runs on the ps3 and xbox 360, which are both less powerful than the switch. Plus, this is a portable. People shouldn’t expect it to match the power and performance of a dedicated home console
LOL NO. This game ran at 60 fps and it runs at mid 20 fps on switch on the lowest settings possible. So no MH: World or RDR 2 on switch. Keep dreaming Nintendo manchild.
pat sary well I️ wasn’t expecting mh world since Sony payed off capcom to keep it ps4 exclusive. And I️ wasn’t expecting it to run as well as the other *home* consoles. For a portable device to run Doom at 30fps and rarely less than that is impressive
Unless portability meas EVERYTHING, get it on ps4 or xbox one X. Doom deserved a better port, on hardware that was more capable. They should have waited till it could be done properly instead of churning out this 612p 30fps soupy, washed out port. Or, done it as some sort of cell shaded conversion. THAT would have been awesome.
The Vita is weaker than the Ps3, and people complain about the Switch not stacking up to the Ps4? I would love to see the Vita attempt to do Doom 2016, and Remote Play doesn't count because that's your Ps4 putting in the actual work.
It's beyond me why the Switch only got 4gb ram, especially when it's shared with the graphics. With 8GB they could have increased texture resolution greatly with virtually no loss to performance.
I can't wait for decades to pass and there's df retro on all the doom 2016 ports. If it's anything like the original, we're going to see it on a lot of platforms. It's just great to see Mario and doom guy on the same place again and great video as always df
Such an amazing technical feat. I cannot believe that having a game like this on a fucking 6.2 inch tablet would ever be possible. Although I don't think that I'll pick it up unless they get that frame rate at a steady 30fps, because I can bear 30fpa but when it drops below that I'm out.
@@nickmotsarsky4382 - I think it is amazing when taking it’s release time into account. The Switch wasn’t even a year old yet, and early games for a system often aren’t as impressive as the later entries. So it’s definitely impressive to me that it runs this well on hardware that was pretty new for 2017. (And by that I mean it’s a new platform that has it’s own nuances)
@@TheRogueMaverick I have a Switch Lite and it's a great system, but the fact that Nintendo underclocked the Tegra chip really pisses me off. It could have been so much more with a 1Ghz GPU instead of 768Mhz..
@@nickmotsarsky4382 - That’s true. However, I wonder how much it would impact battery life. The original launch model could get 2-6 hours depending on the game and system settings. Any more power and we could have been looking at 1-4 hours, if that. Now for being docked, on the other hand, it’s less clear why it was done that way.
This feels like the comparison's I've seen between Half-Life 2 on PC and on 360. Muddied visuals, lower frame-rate, bad frame-pacing, but you know what? Those problems didn't stop me loving those games on 360, and it won't stop me loving DOOM on the Switch.
Thang Nguyen The game targets, yet doesn't usually meet, 30fps with inconsistent frame-pacing on Xbox 360. It runs far better than original Xbox, yet nowhere near as well as on PC.
Everytime a new game comes out for Switch you say "It pushes the Switch hardware to its absolute limits". I don't think it's fair to say that about any console during its first year of release, be it Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft. Developers only usually master the hardware capabilities late in its lifetime. I'm sure we'll see better looking, better running games on the system before its lifespan ends.
iau the specs of switch are out there i have one and i knew it wasnt powerfull in the first place but not even the xbox one x or playstation have two titles that have 10 zelda and mario
iau lol no, even the XBOX ONE and PS4 look way better than Switch, PC completely smokes the Switch at max settings lmao but hey the Switch is portable so it's ok.
Hanifi Pekince Mario and Zelda aren't 10s, many people gave it 7 to 9s And 10s Also ps4 does have 4 games that many People gave 10s, uncharted 4, Witcher 3, The last of us and Overwatch and Horizon zero dawn.
Beat Doom 3 on Switch, absolutely loved it. Own 2016 Doom on lots of systems, but love it on the OLED. I play in bed a lot, it’s the best way to kill demonic presence. 🐸
although that the game looks good on the system, framepacing and framerate issues usually hurt me a lot while playing (couldn't go through FFXV because of the frame pacing for example)... oh well.
Ziv Riger Honestly, the frame rate is very good. Obviously, I'm not going to argue that 40 is better than 60, but the switch version is stl very good. To me, the actual frame rate number doesn't matter as much as the consistency. The other console version drop and stutter very frequently, while I have experienced only 2 noticeable drops in about 10 hours of play. (This may not be entirely accurate as I have experience some lag while playing online, but that is most likely my terrible internet connection) I would much prefer a most stable 40 FPS than a very inconsistent 60. I can't notice the difference when playing normally, it's frame drops that ruin it for me.
The occasional frame rate issues with Doom Switch are nothing compared to FFXV on PS4 and its frame-pacing issues. It's much smoother overall, actually.
The last dedicated handheld system, the Vita, couldn't even run Ps3 ports without some very noticeable sacrifices. Now, we have a handheld that looks very similar to a Ps4 game, that's pretty awesome.
The fact that this portable version has the exact same gameplay and content as its bigger counterparts is huge. As far as I'm aware of, there is no AAA game that is released on both handheld and home console/PC wherein the handheld is exactly the same as the bigger version (only scaled down in resolution and special effects), until now. EDIT: That said, these are the kinds of technical marvels that are right up on DF's alley, and I really enjoyed this analysis and coverage. Kudos, DF.
Big mistake in the video is that he says DOOM is feature complete which it's not. It's missing the snapmap level editor. Like so others can be informed of this please.
senayb3 Even if nobody really cares about it, it is still a feature and thus you can't say that it is feature complete. However, I believe I read somewhere online that snapmap has been confirmed to be coming in an update in the near future.
Am I the only one around here who really loves Snapmap and what it's capable of? Sure, it's not DoomBuilder but you were never going to have anything like that on consoles anyway.
The thing is I would love to see is future games is when 3rd party developers aren't just porting games, but rather having the Switch in mind during the development. Exporting both high-poly and low-poly assets in order to accommodate the low-powered nature of the Switch. I think this would actually solve a lot of the performance issues that John takes notes of in Doom. Switching to half-poly-enemies when more than X numbers of enemies are on screen at once would definitely help the performance. using lower-poly assets and environments would also help a great deal, perhaps even making it possible to reach 720p resolution (which is actually quite good in Doom)
This is really impressive. However, I still do think that Doom should’ve been able to run a little better on Switch. Much of the texture and other downgrades are due to the limited memory of the Switch and the 30fps is obviously due to the lack of power, but I also think that, due to the fact that the system is new and that they had only a few months to port this, the system should be able to see better performance and visuals in the future. Like I said, panic button did a fantastic job on the port, but limited time and knowledge of the system is always going to hurt it. I think Wolfenstein 2 should hopefully run at least as well as this and quite possibly better.
It's due to the CPU, it's quite good for mobile standards but pumping out 60 frames per second can be quite difficult, especially if the system is being pushed to the limit.
This doesn't look as bad as I thought it would. I bought the game for the Switch back in 2017 and I was amazed by the fact that they were able to compress this game and make it playable on what is essentially a tablet. Granted, I am a PC gamer at heart, so the pared back graphics and framerate did catch me off guard at first, but playing in handheld mode with motion blur made the 30fps framerate and compressed graphics barely noticeable. I eventually got used to the Switch version and I still play it all the time when I'm away from my PC. As for the upcoming Wolfenstein II port that comes out this Friday, I've seen gameplay from E3 videos and trailers and it doesn't look as compressed as DOOM. Granted, Panic Button, Machine Games, and Bathesda had more time to work with Wolfenstein since that didn't come out in the same year as the Switch like DOOM did. They had basically a whole year to work with the game. The framerate looks like it'll still be capped at 30fps, but since I've gotten used to how DOOM plays at 30fps on the Switch, Wolfenstein II shouldn't be a problem. I'm looking forward to Wolfenstein II releasing on the Switch this Friday and I'm waiting for your video covering the comparisons between the different versions!
Watching this in anticipation of the video for Doom Eternal on Switch. I don't own a Switch personally, but I find it to be a fascinating device, and thus I feel the Switch videos are some of my favorites on Digital Foundry.
Looking at this comment section makes me see how stupid some people are. I mean... You were expecting something which is five times smaller than a PS4 to run Doom or any other game as well as it runs?
Can take joy controllers in one pocket and the tablet in another and doom in my pocket and my portable battery back pocket and the future is here just need GTA 5 Read dead 1 and 2 and game over switch for the wins.
I'd compare it more to the GBA version of Doom II. It had to take some concessions, but the experience is more or less intact. The only major difference is a couple of the levels got cut in half but all of the content is technically still there.
Draggobuttboi also DOOM Switch runs at 720p 30fps with adaptive resolution, and the SNES DOOM only runs at 256x224p (with a windowed screen for improve performance).
It's amazing that none of the content is changed to make this work. All of the levels and enemies are the same, just the graphics settings, resolution and target framerate are lower. That's quite a technical achievement, all things considered. But it also helps that this game targets a darker look. I wonder how Wolfenstein 2, a much more colorful game, turns out.
Usually people who know their stuff about frame rates and resolution (i.e. not me) tend to have this snobbery where anything less than their expectations are horrible and nobody should ever accept dropped quality, rabble rabble rabble. However, I love how DF acknowledges both compromises and people's willingness to accept certain standards. For example, 30fps is good enough for me in most cases, so it irks me when people pretend anything less than 60 is unacceptable and should be protested.
It'll give you maybe 10-20% boost in performance, better battery :]. GPU is mostly identical :D. Only the CPU is a different thing. And the x2 is a lot more expensive compared to X1.
hydzior Battery performance is up 50% at the same performance as the X1. In term of how much more GPU performance it would or wouldn't add, I believe that nvidia might be a bit to positive. But 30% wouldn't be a practical impossibility, but you would lose the extra battery endurance. As for price sure, can't argue against that.
What would the use of going for the X2 be when people would then complain that they didn't go for the X3 or whatever comes next? Technology just moves too fast.
@Zachary Jones If by Tegra X3 you mean Tegra Xavier it isn´t out until sometimes next year, over a year after Nintendo Switch was released so its kinda unrelevant. Tegra X2 was already released and I did state why, 2 hours more battery life on the go would be awesome? Better performance while docked to be even more relevant for 3rd party? Two great obvious points imo.
I'm a pc gamer and the switch version is a marvel to behold in your hand. Panic Button did an awesome job. I didn't notice any difference in gameplay between the pc and the switch version. It is much more fun in the switch version. I'm having a blast playing it again on for the 3rd version. Kudos to Panic Button! Well done.
Why do some think it was an impossible task to bring DOOM on the Switch?, the game runs on the Xbox One at 60fps and the Switch hardware even though it's weaker than the One, isn't drastically weaker, seriously, it's possible to bring almost any game to any platform, it's just a matter of how much of a cut they make to bring is to said platform, impossible my arse lol, want to know something that does sound impossible?, DOOM on the C64, it's not a pretty sight but it works. Anyway, for me, the cut back are just too big for me and I always prefer to play games the way the developers intended so in this case, PC or the other consoles is the best option, thats not taking away what they've done for the Switch version and if you only own a Switch, it looks alright but giving the choice, I would rather play the PC version of it.
The Switch is drastically weaker. It's a ~10W last gen tablet. The Xbox One is a 7 year old mid-range PC. In PC terms it's weak, sure, but next to an ageing ARM device?
Thanks for the analysis, John. I can certainly appreciate this as a technical showcase. What Panic Button has done to get this running is extremely impressive. That said, I would never own this, not when I have the original on PC. Even if I were a portable gamer, I don't see myself buying a game that runs so poorly -- even watching the Switch version here on full screen was hurting my eyes due to just how blurry the game appears to be. I guess for Nintendo fans it's a win, though.
In action, it actually looks and feels quite alright, probably thanks to the heavy motion-blur applied. That being said, I understand your perspective. The Switch is primarily a portable first; if performance is more important than convenience, or if portability isn't a concern for you, then by all means enjoy your games on better hardware.
i played through the single player and it's fine, multiplayer turns to a stuttering soupy mess on some maps though, specifically that sky one, which suggests they didn't spend too long optimizing that in comparison (oh and I almost forgot, there's a glitch in the game since launch that can break your switches speakers, it's a loud buzzing sound and its terrifying because it seemingly happens at random)
Honestly, I'm glad I already have the PC version this time around. This straight up wasn't a very good port, and the slowdown in heavier battles is too much for me. Even a 'well ported' version of this wouldn't guarantee a higher framecap. I'll stick with Mario Kart 8 for my handheld multiplayer needs, but that being said, I have no doubt it's still fun and satisfying as hell, especially on a handheld, and It'll be interesting to see a nintendo audience try a Doom game. For those of you getting this on Switch, Rip and fucking tear to your heart's content.
Why does it seem that Nintendo is getting a pass when it comes to constructive criticism? Yes, by most intent, it's amazing what they were able to do with this port on the Switch but it's really lacking in a lot of area's that affect gameplay and experience however everyone seems to be hush hush about that, why?
*+Nuna Busi* I'm one of those people that'll go to bat for this port, but that's not really true - not because of the downgraded graphics, but rather the downgraded performance. Higher framerates directly benefit the responsiveness of the gameplay experience in any game (play _Ocarina of Time_ on the N64 at twenty FPS and the 3DS version at thirty FPS back-to-back if you don't believe me), but that responsiveness becomes especially crucial in games that are fast-paced or require precision in movement or aiming; long story short, _Doom 4_ is just about the worst game you could ever choose to convert to thirty FPS. The fact that it's on Switch is unequivocally a good thing, but make no mistake, the ability to play the game portably does come directly at the cost of the in-game experience - it's just that portability is such a huge selling point that that sacrifice becomes worth the trade-off.
What really makes me not want to buy this port is the lack of motion aiming. I'm so used to it from Splatoon and Zelda, etc, that the lack of it makes the aim super clunky for me and not ideal for a fast paced game like DOOM.
+Blackmarsh63 The big boys play with a keyboard and mouse, because dual analog is simply inferior when it comes to First Person Shooters. Motion Aiming would have actually made it feel closer to keyboard and mouse, which is better.
MetroidJunkie Mouse aiming is unrealistic. How often do you see people 360 in real life? If everyone use a controller then it doesn't matter. There is a reason why motorcycles and cars don't race against each other, so why would you play mouse and keyboard against others who use gamepads to get an advantage? If it's single player, who cares about the input method? PC gamers in general suck with gamepads. I find it funny that gamers complain at input methods they suck with, blaming the device instead of themselves. Mouse is great, gamepad is great and motion controll is great, if you don't agree you just suck at it.
+ GrankFarrett Are you that big of a gamepad fanboy that you choose to go with the "You just suck at it" fallacy? That's like saying critics of Superman 64 just need to step their game up.
Do you usually play the Switch version in portable or handheld?
BlankManTM I mostly play in portable mode. The only games I really play on the 📺 are NBA 2k18 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. If I’d have to put a number on it it’s prob 70/30 portable mode.
That’s awesome! I thought it would really struggle with the graphically intense parts in the second half with lots of different enemies.
Justin Millard it has dipped in frame rate a handful of times but as long as you have the motion blur setting on, it looks and plays super smooth and most of the people I let try it thought it was running at 60fps and were blown away that it was even running at all on such a small device 😂
2017 will be remembered for a great deal of things, but most importantly as the year when it was finally possible to play Doom and Splatoon on the same system.
maybe crash in some time. only mr iwata will know
SounDWavex Sempai well
@@pedropablonaranjoa.121 I'm from the future, you can play Resident Evil and Wolfenstein on the same system as Zelda and Splatoon
Westy I’m also from the future to inform you that you can also play The Witcher 3 and Botw on the same system
@@theeOnslaught I'm also from the future. You can play Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Super Smash Bros. on the same system.
I bet the rest of the industry is watching closely this release in particular.
Mikey C something wrong with your PC than. The PS4 and Xbone run Wolf 2 perfectly well at good settings. So a PC should have no issues. Neither will the Switch.
Mathias Arends Hansen not that big a task ... it Vulkan that allows such a thing ... vulkan is built with mobile and low end pcs in mind ...
You might be interested in stuff like the GPD WIN then, especially the next version planned for next year.
I have been playing full fledge console games on portable since psp but ya its nice that nintendo caught up some even if a bit late the party
psp420bam psp don't really play triple AAA games.
Psp had AAA rated games like god of war and tony hawk but consumer opinions do vary
When in a traffic jam the only thing one must do is to RIP AND TEAR!
TISQUESUSA sounds sexual, but it actually isn't.
xBoolin It means that you RIP AND TEAR, UNTIL IT IS DONE.
Simte if you’re not the driver
For when you're mortally challenged by a traffic jam
Good idea! Then after you've done that, you can boot up Doom and play.
Just to note, when I say this is the "complete game" I'm talking about the campaign specifically. The maps are all there and complete. If you look beyond that, however, the Switch version lacks Snap Map which means no custom maps.
John Linneman do you have plans to use your Switch "equivalent" PC to do a preliminary test of upcoming game performance?
By is everyone that finds a problem bring up Snap Map? It's not like everyone likes to make maps and could easily be added in a later patch.
Snapmap took up a lot of storage though.

I could swear that I heard in some vid that numbers are identical.
It may have been this vid.
Or maybe IGN's review.
Not sure.
It's easy to miss if you'rent listening carefully enough.
+MysteryMii215
Then they should have the option to download it.
I would never buy this for docked mode. Portable DOOM 2016 is what it is all about.
Of course, even in Docked Mode, it's not terrible. Aside from real-time reflections, it manages to retain all of the effects of the other versions. If you can deal with it looking blurrier, it's still a beautiful looking game.
Yup
It's great still great on docked mode.
To each there own i dont play portable much and im playing this with a bright yellow pikachu gamecube controller feels so wrong yet so right
Btw you can turn motion blur off fully or keep it on I kinda recommend have it on to hide the frame rate I think but it’s you’re opinion 😅
This is how you port a game, props to PanicButton for theur great job !
Tchitchouan Inouane I agree
JJJUUULLLIIIAAANNN Im have a Switch and I never play it docked....I have a PC for that. If it plays great handheld then thats my test.
I would prefer a lower resolution for a stable framerate even if it's 30fps. Playing doom with drops to 22 fps in every bigger fight is absolutely a no go.
it's a terrible port. they could do much better.
Faizan Ali I think the Switch is very reasonably powered for a portable
For something that you can play on a bus, it is quite amazing.
Neurotyczny Kot Why would you be on a bus?

Wow. Your grammar is good. But can't you forgive people for using the wrong preposition? It's not like that english is the native language of everyone..
gNpNct Hey, no harm. I'm not trying to make fun.
Infinity Dave
Than you'll be pleased to know(if you don't already)that recently released PS4/XO/PC Wolfenstein is also coming to Switch, but in 2018.
Yeah powerful spec isn't everything, development is the most important aspect and Nintendo excels in game development
Psyblader501 I agree there are some great games on Switch. Still I like that I can play Doom on the go. I can't carry my pc and monitor around with me sadly :p
Psyblader501
And you can carry gaming PC around?
I suppose there are gaming laptops, but how practical are those,at 5x-10x the price of Switch?
You need a table or something to comfortably use it.
And then basically becomes a desktop PC.
Doom Switch looks AMAZING for a tablet-like device.
A tablet with proper physical controls.
i don't care i'm amazed how the hell this game is even running on switch.
darsirious tbh, this game isn't that demanding
for a mobile type architecture yes it is.
darsirious yeah same here, and it’s still super exciting and fun playing it on the Switch... was kind of mind blown playing it at my favorite cate yesterday:D
That's the power of smart programming.
Joshua Minke oh now it's not, ok
Looks pretty good on a 6.0-7.0 inch screen.
Are you sure you know how big 6-7 inches is as your screen is probably more like 5 inches
The Switch screen is 6.2 inches to be exact.
Any crappy game can look good if you reduce the size of the image.
Looks blurry on my 5.1 inch phone at 1080p60
+C C
Your phone's 1080p viewing a sub-720p game so, no duh it would look blurry. The Switch's screen is 720p so the blurriness is far less noticeable.
_They are Digital Foundry - brutal, without mercy._
_But you... you will be_ Doom _on the go._
_Downgrade and stutter... yet prove you are _*_fun._*
This comment gave me a good laugh
Beautiful.
Tyler Werbenjagermanjenson
You'll get Wolfenstein The New Order in 2018.
This is the most demanding portable game in history, more or less. So the fact that it works as well as it does, is impressive as hell.
Anon 4ever it's usually at around 610-720p 30fps actually
The people complaining about 612p on a 720p screen had better be playing on PC with a locked 1080p+ resolution 24/7 because consoles do the exact same shit.
If you want impressive look at the super thin laptops that have a GTX 1080 inside them! -despite how expensive it is lmao-
The game itself isn't even that demanding. I wanna see the downgrades to Wolfenstein 2, that game has some big frame drops and looks a lot better than DOOM.
Anon 4ever
you don't even belive in people that owns the game, you look like some kind of Digital Foundry fanboy, lol.
Lycon Xero I can't wait to play it, this looks awesome and I haven't played DOOM yet just a demo but I like DOOM and this looks like a good place to play, for me at least
gilberto caldeira Yup there is plenty of work to still be done, I wonder how much time they were given to port this
If I had to guess... I would say you are lying. I am a Switch owner and I'm not "dying" to play this game on Switch. I am curious, but I will in no way shell out actual money to play this garbage port.
i think they will fix resolution and fps problems
This is my most anticipated Digital Foundry video ever!
JHDK I'm also looking forward to LA Noire and Wolfenstein 2 on Switch
It is! I've watched the hands on video more than 20 times because it's so comforting to watch Digital Foundry impressions on The Switch
Digital Foundry Excellence. As always!
I'll play this constantly on my long trips. So good.
Carl Orell Battery packs, Car chargers, Plug it in when you stop, etc.
Carl Orell It’s also much longer than 2 hours
It's two hours minimum, most of the time the battery lasts much longer.
Don't bother with Battery Packs. You should look up Power Banks that are compatible with the Switch.
Carl Orell Here’s my problem when people complain about the switch’s battery life
1. Power banks exist
2. get a switch car charger or cars like mine already have house plugs inside it
3. If you are going by plane, train, etc.. then there’s a good chance they have plugs as well
4. Airports have plugs if you are waiting for a flight
It plays, looks, and sounds like Doom... That's all I care about
MetroidFREAK21 Plus portability
MetroidFREAK21 all at 20fps
well duh.... its doom
30fps** stop lying to yourself David Francois
Joshua Werner nope, watched the video, 21fps
Honestly... Not bad for a portable device. I expected stuff to be missing. Years ago guys, having 3D games like this in your backpack wasn't a thing, and it kind of still isn't, but this really is impressive considering that the switch is a portable console.
I use to think the same thing but now in the future witcher 3 bioshock and now eternal on the way they owe us more now if anything
At the end of the day it does not matter. No other portal device on the market can run this game like the Switch and have the gameplay intact. If you want to play the best looking Doom then play it on PC and if you want to play Doom anywhere on the go then get the Switch version.
Nick Mack
There is only one flaw to this version of the game besides missing snapmap, and thats the price, 60 bucks for a game that you can get else where for like 30 or less is a pretty steep buy
But, there are no portal devices in the market?!
I haven't had any slow down problems at all even online game play. The only way way I noticed the graphics is a direct comparison like one UA-cam videos. If you are just playing normally you don't really seem to notice it all. At least not for me any ways. It's an excellent port it plays just the way you want it to.
You can see in the video here the frame rate dropping constantly and significantly. You're either lying or you need your eyes checked.
bruce livingston You can stop insulting. The latest update has cleaned up a lot of Slowdown and Audio Bugs. So no, he is not lying nor blind.
Considering the specs, impressive
Phillip Scott I'm only laughing at your nonsense mate
It’s ridiculous how people think because they have a pc that consoles are uder garbage. I have a pc and obviously love it (I7, gtx 1080, and 16gb of ram) i crank everything to ultra and have no problems. I also appreciate consoles and have a switch and ps4 and enjoy the different experiences each provide. It’s ridiculous to argue over pc and consoles. It doesn’t matter what platform you’re on or if you have more than one
Please don't bother with these children, they will eventually grow up and realize what they're doing is nothing but a sham
Dimitrelos300 that wasn’t the point. The point was it’s ridiculous how most people on the internet feel like they need an allegiance to one gaming area and they can’t appreciate what other people enjoy. Whatever you can play on is fine, it doesn’t matter if you have spare money to waste or not
What I've found hilarious is that as soon as PS4 fanboys all heard about the One X (scorpio) they all started claiming they had beastly $3500 PCs and so the X was clearly a waste of money haha
Such a fuckle bunch of fanboys I have never seen.
Sonic Mania at £15, though, was an obvious buy.
thecowofbeef you forget that this version includes all dlc unlike the other platforms.
But isn't all the DLC free now? I'm in the same boat I can't justify spending $60 when I can get the ps4 version for like 25.
Even though I'd rather buy this version
dnizus all other versions come with all the DLC too
other tomperson I had the same thing. I bought mania on switch because it was at the same priceand there weren't too many shortcomings
Rip and Tear on the go until its done
i picked up my copy yesterday, popped it in my switch, loaded the first level. had 0 updates installed and i somehow had an option to increase FOV. i brought it home and updated and lost the FOV option.
Axiom I had the same thing
Axiom perhaps the fov option was messing something on the game and they removed it so that they could fix it
i dont know how you can break FOV without breaking the camera but if it was removed, it was most likely more due to performance (wider FOV=more things needing to be renderered)
Axiom You bought this on Switch for $60? L.
Blessed Red ive never played it before, not an L.
The frame pacing and the fps drops are down side. but still this is a great achievement especially on a handheld! console congrats Nintendo!
Frankie de Rossi yeah, when you’re actually just playing DOOM on Switch it’s still the same awesome experience regardless and it’s portable
+Frankie de Rossi
Congratulate Panic Button, not Nintendo
joe rhodes I get what youre saying but this isnt the same 'praise it even tho its weak' like the wii U.
AntonioR Software I haven't noticed any drops myself besides 2 or 3. Somehow they made it seem like a very smooth 30 fps even though it isn't.
AntonioR Software I’ve played gta 5 on a laptop from Walmart buddy nothing bothers me anymore
So now that the 1.1.1 patch is out, how about a re-look like what you did with PUBG on the Xbone?
*See's DOOM @ 720P/30 FPS*
Pffftttt that sucks!!!
*See's DOOM on a portable device*
HELL YES!!!!
Seriously, if you're not impressed with this, something is wrong with you. DOOM was never meant for a portable console, and yet... here we are... and it is GLORIOUS!!!
Mad Pistol it is BELOW 720p, this isn't 2006!
In 2006, not even a super high-end PC could run DOOM, and yet, we're playing it on a souped up tablet now.
Your comment just shows the hypocrisy from switch users really.
Im not hating on the switch but this just shows that regardless of the poor quality in comparison to other devices, it will still be good because someone uses the word "portability"
The device still does well though.
Portable PC devices did it before, though so this isn't something new.
Nintendrones hate on games they don't get and when they do but at a lower res and framerate they praise the hell out of it despite being the worst version of it. (But muh portibility, nah no one leaves the house with the switch)
It's crazy how far portables have come in just 4 years. The steam deck runs the game on high at 60fps perfectly.
Yes, but still switch uses an ARM soc. Steam deck uses a laptop hardware AND still a portable pc
@@tomianz-1242 battery life will be an issue too on the decks and ROG ally type of PC handheld. The Switch 2 will likely aim for that kind of fidelity and then some at a smaller form factor and 2-3x the battery life.
I have this game on Switch and it looks pretty good
Gemtem no reason to I'm on the go too much
obviously looks pretty good, its the best looking portable FPS ever created until Wolfenstein 2 for the Switch will release.
You guys are really pushing out the content atmo. Thank you all for your hard work in bringing us these videos.
Either, because the Switch on average consumes 11-15 watts versus the OG PS4's 148 watts and the PS4 Slim's 122 watts.
the switch is nowhere near an Xbox one in specs, maybe the Xbox 360
I don't see DOOM 2016 running on the 360, it couldn't even run a faithful port of DOOM 3 without cutting out features or making the map smaller. The Launch 360 is over 150 watts and the launch XB 1 is over 100 watts. And your point about graphics to watt efficiency is? Are you saying the XB1 and 360 is more "power efficient" than a Switch?
Holy shit I never realized this xD
¡And now let's play doom on the church!
BLGaming All the demons would burn instantly tho, that’s no fun
I think the Switch just flat out won't turn on if you are going to play Doom on the church, so, uh, be careful about that.
@@TDRR_Gamez nah Doomguy is instant heaven material. I mean come on he is tackling Satan's army head on.

When the thing is limited to only 4GB of shared RAM/VRAM, part of which is always occupied by the OS, specially texture quality is naturally going to have to be cut down when you port over a game built for consoles with twice the memory.
Not to mention no one wants a 74GB game on the Switch which probably results from high res textures.
this game looks pretty dang decent for 4GB of ram just imagine 6GB of ram if that end up making it xbox one level and ps4 level god damn with that 1080p 60fps
RAM does not Increase FPS. Its more of a stabilizer
Certain games have requirements and Doom requires 8gb of Ram
This is a technological feat none the less because of how this game is still able to run especially using 15W
My PC uses 650W and still can't maintain a steady 60FPS...
Been looking forward to this :)
What am I supposed to be looking at for the chromatic abboration comparison?
I don't notice anything either, but it's best to leave it off. The game looks cleaner that way I think
Now we wait on Skyrim on Switch! Very excited
Connor Berry
You still haven't played skyrim?
Skyrim is soon to be 7 years old mate. You can run it right now for basically free (get a key for a $ or something) on pretty much any PC built after 2010.
Skyrim is 6 years old literally today (11/11/11) so where are you getting "soon to be 7 years old" from?
Get very excited for Skyrim VR you mean
Marcel Krebs I actually have it on PC. I just want to experience it on switch with portablility and such. Some people aren't into that tho so it makes sense
Well my PC is shit so if i had a Switch i would be more than happy to play this game!
FJM8940 yo igual!! DOOM portatil es épico!!
Can't stop playing, it just blows my mind the whole time, it looks very impressive in person. Doesn't seem real, but it is....LOVE THIS GAME!
This is so impressive. When I get a Switch, I'll definitely pick this up and give it a go.
very impressed with this port after playing it myself.
People shouldn’t expect it to match the power and performance of a dedicated home console
.
LOL NO. This game ran at 60 fps and it runs at mid 20 fps on switch on the lowest settings possible. So no MH: World or RDR 2 on switch. Keep dreaming Nintendo manchild.
pat sary great. Can you link me to another video with a 6 inch tablet that’s running doom better than the switch?
pat sary well I️ wasn’t expecting mh world since Sony payed off capcom to keep it ps4 exclusive. And I️ wasn’t expecting it to run as well as the other *home* consoles. For a portable device to run Doom at 30fps and rarely less than that is impressive
From affordable portable hardware, this makes me appreciate how far we've come.
MRTOWELRACK the Xbox one s and PS4 are cheaper, and it’s like $15 on every other platforms
THAT would have been awesome.
lmao at these two replies ^
where were you idiots when Borderlands 2 ran at 10-15 FPS at 540p on the Vita? This is a huge jump for a portable.
Lol ^ This is the best comeback I've ever seen xD
The Vita is weaker than the Ps3, and people complain about the Switch not stacking up to the Ps4? I would love to see the Vita attempt to do Doom 2016, and Remote Play doesn't count because that's your Ps4 putting in the actual work.
I gotta disagree. I think it looks better docked than in handheld mode. It looks more blurry in handheld mode imo
skilarbabcock yep... Also you must set chromatic aberration off... Looks Much Better now, even in portable mode
Tomás Anzaldi yeah I was shocked at how much clearer it looked after I turned CA off
CartoonWarStudios What's CA
It looks even better after the patch on both handheld and console
skilarbabcock chromatic aberration
I really liked that they brought up watching this video on the phone, because it ends up being how I watch most DF videos

It's beyond me why the Switch only got 4gb ram, especially when it's shared with the graphics.
With 8GB they could have increased texture resolution greatly with virtually no loss to performance.
It would be far more expensive.
I'd pay $30~60 more for 4gb more ram.
Not sure if that would be the difference, it's a handheld system after all.
@@LetoZeth Not all people think so. 320$ sounds better than 360-390$.
Great video, amazing what they accomplished on this portable konsol!
It's not amazing. You can get the Witcher 3 to run on a tablet, too, all it takes is dropping the graphics and framerate to awful levels.
Nick Motsarsky
You kinda predicted the future with your comment
Those problems didn't stop me loving those games on 360, and it won't stop me loving DOOM on the Switch.
you mean Half life 2 on the original Xbox ? the game ran well on 360
Thang Nguyen
The game targets, yet doesn't usually meet, 30fps with inconsistent frame-pacing on Xbox 360. It runs far better than original Xbox, yet nowhere near as well as on PC.
A better comparison is Half-Life 2 on the Nvidia Shield.
MetroidJunkie
Maybe, but I have no experience with how that actually feels in motion. I've played HL2 on The Orange Box a number of times, though.
Well, Half-Life 2 was on the Original Xbox but I hear it suffers from slowdown, especially in areas with a lot of physics interactions.
As if the Tegra hasn't been out for some time already.
iau lol no, even the XBOX ONE and PS4 look way better than Switch, PC completely smokes the Switch at max settings lmao but hey the Switch is portable so it's ok.
Hanifi Pekince Mario and Zelda aren't 10s, many people gave it 7 to 9s And 10s
Also ps4 does have 4 games that many People gave 10s, uncharted 4, Witcher 3, The last of us and Overwatch and Horizon zero dawn.
I imagine they were just giving their opinions. I would personally put BotW at 9 or so. I am about halfway through Mario, and it is mostly excellent.
It's been 6 years. Oh my god
The new king of the toilet entertainment has come.
after i saw this i might get it for my portable shooting needs
Purchased this as a big Doom 2016 fan, and it’s great to play this in portable mode. No regrets and enjoying it!

Katphood Plays A Game yea no
Technology has come a long way
The last dedicated handheld system, the Vita, couldn't even run Ps3 ports without some very noticeable sacrifices. Now, we have a handheld that looks very similar to a Ps4 game, that's pretty awesome.
@@VGamingJunkieVT That's very exagerrated. More like a Xbox One game in 720-900p with a few noticeable graphical differences and unstable 30 FPS.
@@max-dy3vs Hey, apart from resolution and framerate, it looks very similar to the Ps4 version too.
I actually have heaps of fun with this version in both docked and handheld! Arcade mode is so addicting and I always come back for it
The fact that this portable version has the exact same gameplay and content as its bigger counterparts is huge.
Like so others can be informed of this please.
anyone even used Snapmap?
Is not that important really
senayb3 Even if nobody really cares about it, it is still a feature and thus you can't say that it is feature complete. However, I believe I read somewhere online that snapmap has been confirmed to be coming in an update in the near future.
Am I the only one around here who really loves Snapmap and what it's capable of? Sure, it's not DoomBuilder but you were never going to have anything like that on consoles anyway.
senayb3 snap what?
Just bought a Switch for this. Usually play on PC.

Dont matter !!! Looks good and is fun!!!
Video literally tells you it looks bad due to blurry visuals..
Digital Foundry Excellence. As always!
Again, don't go to comment section , you loose your time. better play your games and watch people playing games.
Mighty Hadi watching people playing games is EVEN more of a waste of time
Yeah! Why would you suggest to people to watch people play games?
You should stop expecting 90% of 3rd party games on the Switch.
pat sary I don't remember saying that I was expecting 90% of third party games to come to it. Stop making things up.
Can take joy controllers in one pocket and the tablet in another and doom in my pocket and my portable battery back pocket and the future is here just need GTA 5 Read dead 1 and 2 and game over switch for the wins.
azteking if doom can run on switch then rdr and gta 5 will have no problem
Red dead redemption 2 ain't happening the other two would be great
It's 1995 all over again. You thought the Super NES port was impressive? Well think again. Be glad you get to play DOOM on the go.
Burrito Eater What? The snes port IS very impressive.
well it's running at about the same resolution and framerate :D
I'd compare it more to the GBA version of Doom II. It had to take some concessions, but the experience is more or less intact. The only major difference is a couple of the levels got cut in half but all of the content is technically still there.
Draggobuttboi SNES DOOM drops to 07 fps on the more demanding areas, the Switch version only drops to 21 fps. It isn't the same at all.
Draggobuttboi also DOOM Switch runs at 720p 30fps with adaptive resolution, and the SNES DOOM only runs at 256x224p (with a windowed screen for improve performance).
Just bought my copy for the Switch! Thanks!!
If Nintendo only have gone for the X2.
88oscuro not worth it, trying to sell a tablet for more than $300 is bad
Meanwhile, gamers from the 90's travel to the future to today have their minds blown and these complaints are the phrases of a spoiled gamer.

In PC terms it's weak, sure, but next to an ageing ARM device?
it's a lot weaker than Xbox One, like 4-5 times, just look at the specs
It is in fact drastically weaker, in orders of magnitude.
And yet, Mario odyssey and Mario kart 8dx look better than literally anything on xbone og
Jeff Grady don't be ridiculous
It looks better than I thought it would. Its just crazy that They actually went and did it
impressive port, impressive analysis video. thank you!
Awesome video I can't wait to play doom on the switch
I went from ultra graphics on PC and hair trigger controls to this on switch, what a difference. It's a technical feat, but not worth the high price.
i played through the single player and it's fine, multiplayer turns to a stuttering soupy mess on some maps though, specifically that sky one, which suggests they didn't spend too long optimizing that in comparison (oh and I almost forgot, there's a glitch in the game since launch that can break your switches speakers, it's a loud buzzing sound and its terrifying because it seemingly happens at random)
Excellent video John :D
You should do a DF Retro(spective) on Doom 3 for the Original Xbox. It just sounds so interesting about the previous impossible port.
+GzG92, it looks like you have it figured out. I agree.
What really makes me not want to buy this port is the lack of motion aiming. I'm so used to it from Splatoon and Zelda, etc, that the lack of it makes the aim super clunky for me and not ideal for a fast paced game like DOOM.
If you want proper games on your kiddie console you need to learn to aim like the big boys do.
Yeah, a missed opportunity to make the Switch port unique. Motion aiming really would have been nice.

The big boys play with a keyboard and mouse, because dual analog is simply inferior when it comes to First Person Shooters.

Are you that big of a gamepad fanboy that you choose to go with the "You just suck at it" fallacy? That's like saying critics of Superman 64 just need to step their game up.
