Coming from playing this at 4K ultra 60fps I must say I am still impressed by this port. It took about 10 minutes to adjust to the lower quality and frame rate but after that I was never once bothered or deterred by anything. When you take in consideration that this is the same Doom as PC running on a tablet basically then you realize that the game is technical achievement and is fantastic!
I'm going to have to agree. I'm also coming from playing this on PC, and the only reason I see myself going back is to play in some user created maps with friends occasionally.
BlankManTM I mostly play in portable mode. The only games I really play on the 📺 are NBA 2k18 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. If I’d have to put a number on it it’s prob 70/30 portable mode.
Justin Millard it has dipped in frame rate a handful of times but as long as you have the motion blur setting on, it looks and plays super smooth and most of the people I let try it thought it was running at 60fps and were blown away that it was even running at all on such a small device 😂
I think with this game I finally understand why the Switch is so exciting for so many people. Most of the time you'd have a console version and then a handheld version of a game, but with the Switch, you're playing full fledged console games on a handheld device and I don't know why I didn't realize this before. I never thought I would be able to play Doom on my bus ride, a game that I played on a stationary, not a bit portable PC. Shit, this port alone made think about a Switch, where before, I've had completely dismissed it. Just the thought of playing even previous gen games on the go makes me pretty excited.
There's a really good Nintendo-centric UA-camr named Arlo who has a video titled "The Nintendo Switch's Unique Opportunity" that goes into this very subject: how awesome for Switch owners and the Switch itself it would be if all the big last-gen games got ported to it so you could play the likes of _Mass Effect_ or _Arkham City_ on the go. Give it a look!
Of course, even in Docked Mode, it's not terrible. Aside from real-time reflections, it manages to retain all of the effects of the other versions. If you can deal with it looking blurrier, it's still a beautiful looking game.

The occasional frame rate issues with Doom Switch are nothing compared to FFXV on PS4 and its frame-pacing issues. It's much smoother overall, actually.
Looking at this comment section makes me see how stupid some people are. I mean... You were expecting something which is five times smaller than a PS4 to run Doom or any other game as well as it runs?
I’ve been playing it on campus at my school in between classes and I gotta day that I absolutely love having this in the undocked mode. It really does look excellent when you’re in the moments of constant shoooting and destroying since you don’t ever stop to take in the scenery. I’m really hoping Wolfenstein will look good as well.
One thing to note is that the effects aren't bare minimum on the Switch because, on the PC version, you have the option to cut them out completely. I should know, my PC runs Doom like crap and I have to remove everything and have it on the smallest resolution just to kinda play it. :P
Reminds me of the Borderlands 2 port on Vita. I honestly expected it to be drastically changed like that port was. That this is the full game and that it runs so close to a locked 30 astounds me. The folks who ported this should be proud.
This looks so good as someone who already has it on the PS4 (pro). Even blurry as fuck and lower quality textures that art shines through so well. God Doom is an incredibly good looking game.
I tell you I used to play gameboy advance without a light adaptor on the bus and I thought it was incredible let alone the quality of the switch. We taking things for granted today. Its an amazing portable machine. Fifa 18, Doom on the go? Damn amazing. I am not a big fan of Nintendo after the gamecube and hated the Wii with passion but the Switch is great for a portable machine. Outstanding graphics
Digital Foundry we just figured out that turning off all the post processing effects in Video settings increases resolution and performance. The game looks a lot better now. Check it out. Also, for Joy-con play, try these settings: Horizontal : 35% Vertical: 35% Look Smoothing: 96% (Auto-aim off) I have no problem playing the game now
The portability wins me over!👍 Not to mention DOOM was heavily considered the "Impossible Console Port" also considered a technical marvel once it made it to PS4 and XB1 so to play this on the Switch at any rate is incredible!
Why do some think it was an impossible task to bring DOOM on the Switch?, the game runs on the Xbox One at 60fps and the Switch hardware even though it's weaker than the One, isn't drastically weaker, seriously, it's possible to bring almost any game to any platform, it's just a matter of how much of a cut they make to bring is to said platform, impossible my arse lol, want to know something that does sound impossible?, DOOM on the C64, it's not a pretty sight but it works. Anyway, for me, the cut back are just too big for me and I always prefer to play games the way the developers intended so in this case, PC or the other consoles is the best option, thats not taking away what they've done for the Switch version and if you only own a Switch, it looks alright but giving the choice, I would rather play the PC version of it.
The Switch is drastically weaker. It's a ~10W last gen tablet. The Xbox One is a 7 year old mid-range PC. In PC terms it's weak, sure, but next to an ageing ARM device?
I never played doom untill yesterday on my switch and i was blown away by it ....yeah the graphics are a little hazy but the gameplay is just spot on it runs fluid with no fps drops and the way how it runs does make me think its running at 60 fps as it really quick the way the camera and movement turn around.... im sure it will get patches to improve it as time goes on aswell
I wonder if he was being sarcastic when he said "Killzone: Mercenary on the Vita may finally have met its match" considering the Vita came out 6 years ago and on older hardware...
Why does it seem that Nintendo is getting a pass when it comes to constructive criticism? Yes, by most intent, it's amazing what they were able to do with this port on the Switch but it's really lacking in a lot of area's that affect gameplay and experience however everyone seems to be hush hush about that, why?
*+Nuna Busi* I'm one of those people that'll go to bat for this port, but that's not really true - not because of the downgraded graphics, but rather the downgraded performance. Higher framerates directly benefit the responsiveness of the gameplay experience in any game (play _Ocarina of Time_ on the N64 at twenty FPS and the 3DS version at thirty FPS back-to-back if you don't believe me), but that responsiveness becomes especially crucial in games that are fast-paced or require precision in movement or aiming; long story short, _Doom 4_ is just about the worst game you could ever choose to convert to thirty FPS. The fact that it's on Switch is unequivocally a good thing, but make no mistake, the ability to play the game portably does come directly at the cost of the in-game experience - it's just that portability is such a huge selling point that that sacrifice becomes worth the trade-off.
It doesnt affect me as much, as I have a resolution upscaler HDMI cable plugged in to my switch and everything looks beautiful on it. I got it for £20 used on Amazon, whilst the "new" price is £40 and I think it still costs the same used. I think the cable was called Thor or something. Anyways, it's a very good budget alternative and I implore you to buy it if you want better detail on basically any switch game.
We now have our answer everyone, on the reason why all the videos showing Doom was played in handheld mode. Well two reasons 1- holy crap they got doom portable and 2- it looks better on the smaller screen.
And here i am waiting for DigitalFoundry to take a look under the hood of Wolfenstein for Switch, so we can see what Voodoo or Dark Magic did Panic Button have to do in order to run on the Switch. Eagerly waiting
Nick Motsarsky I don't have a problem with it. I have played it and finished it. 360p does not bother me. I have played on lower resolutions than that. A very well done port if you ask me.
Alex Nights well said guy! I'm still playing PS1 games on my 32" TV and sometimes on my cousins 55" TV without much issue at 320x240p or 512x240p 3D games.
What really makes me not want to buy this port is the lack of motion aiming. I'm so used to it from Splatoon and Zelda, etc, that the lack of it makes the aim super clunky for me and not ideal for a fast paced game like DOOM.
+Blackmarsh63 The big boys play with a keyboard and mouse, because dual analog is simply inferior when it comes to First Person Shooters. Motion Aiming would have actually made it feel closer to keyboard and mouse, which is better.
MetroidJunkie Mouse aiming is unrealistic. How often do you see people 360 in real life? If everyone use a controller then it doesn't matter. There is a reason why motorcycles and cars don't race against each other, so why would you play mouse and keyboard against others who use gamepads to get an advantage? If it's single player, who cares about the input method? PC gamers in general suck with gamepads. I find it funny that gamers complain at input methods they suck with, blaming the device instead of themselves. Mouse is great, gamepad is great and motion controll is great, if you don't agree you just suck at it.
+ GrankFarrett Are you that big of a gamepad fanboy that you choose to go with the "You just suck at it" fallacy? That's like saying critics of Superman 64 just need to step their game up.
Thanks for the video! My dev team is talking about what it might take to not only develop for PC and PS4 but also Switch. It's interesting to see all the design choices to get performance manageable on the platform. RIght now our texture size is on average 2k but that seems way too high for the switch it seems haha.
Botw had fps drops that were fixed with a patch that came pretty quickly after launch so you guys can most likely see the same thing happen with panic button
This game is a pretty good bellweather for the Switch itself. The Switch makes portable AAA gaming possible for the first time. Some performance sacrifices are obviously required to achieve it. The question you need to ask is this - “Is this how I want to play games?” For some people, the answer is yes.
It’s filled with glitches too. I continually lose sound at random moments in the game, something I never experienced on PS4 or PC. Then I’m also having other issues where stuff will not load properly such as the yellow door opening to allow me to continue to the next level. I had to restart the checkpoint to get it to open. And now I’m stuck at a place where I have to touch a control pad and I can’t and not even a reload of the checkpoint is fixing it so I’m not able to finish the game. It’s really a shame because I really enjoyed the game on the go despite the obvious performance drops we expected.
Here is the crux of the Switch paradox: As a home console, it is vastly outclassed by other hardware. As a portable, it is unmatched in both spec and software; I don't see DOOM coming to phones anytime soon. If you don't care about portability, then by all means enjoy DOOM on another machine. You'll have a better experience overall. If you're not in a fixed location long enough to enjoy playing an in-depth game like DOOM, however, the Switch port makes for a fascinating experiment and compelling experience. I myself couldn't get through DOOM on PS4 due to not being home long enough to enjoy it, something the Switch directly addresses. Not even a laptop can address this issue like the Switch can; since I spend most of my time on transit or on the move, a machine that easily fits in a coat pocket is much easier to enjoy and use than a laptop that needs an open space, power outlet, and mouse to fully enjoy.
Ever seen Vita ports of Ps3 games? The fact that this can competently play a game that was made with Ps4 hardware in mind says wonders about how far we've come.
Would've appreciated a lowered graphics mode that supports either bumped up resolution to native 720p, or 60 fps locked. This is a pretty restrictive port. (I can see a lot of things that I would be okay with being lowered in graphical fidelity for that sweet 60 fps)
Even with all those caveats, this is mightily impressive. Any mention of what API is used on the Switch? Does it support Vulkan or is it some Nintendo proprietary library?
The game looks good on the Switch. It does not look bad until you compare it side by side with PS4, which no one who is actually interested in playing the game is going to do. It sucks that its sub HD but AA and motion blur compensate for it. My issue is with the 30fps framerate. I cannot play shooters on consoles and the 30fps is just very off putting. But I have a PC to fall back on. People who don't, this is a very good and competent port.
i actually am watching this on a phone, an as long as the gameplay is mostly fluid i couldn't care less about a lower resolution or less details. it's about the gameplay and having it on the go. i lived killzone on the vita and doom might get me to buy a switch.
If they had ported it to IDtech5 , it would be running @1080p60 in docked mode and 720p60 in portable, while looking much better. Idtech5 must be the most efficient modern game engine, even beyond UE3.
When someone gets me a portable PC that is the exact size of the Nintendo Switch that can run this game and other games much better you can all talk about your graphics. But right now the Switch is performing much better then what is expected of it. I also think with time and when these games aren't ports and are made with the Switch directly in mind they will perform and look better.
I really expected some downgrades by did not expect it to be this low. This kind of makes me wonder what Wolfenstein is going to be like on the switch. 480p Maybe?
The mere fact that you can have this on the go is enough to overlook a lot Kinda like how FFX on the vita isn't the best looking/running, the fact you're not tied down was enough for me to pick it up (but the other ps2 ports for the vita however...)
To be fair I wouldn't ever play a game like this on the switch... but I'm impressed that it's possible at all to be honest. And hell: perhaps it'll show some people who wouldn't otherwise play DOOM how good this game is. But for me: 60fps is a must in these games. Not in all shooters, but anything fast or multiplayer related it is, for me.
hey can you do a video comparison of with the Chromatic Aberration setting on & off for Switch version? i noticed that all of the screenshots & video are using default settings with it on. but i think Fast RMX & Doom for switch look better with it off.
I'd just like to point out that this is running on what is essentially a circa 2016 Android Tablet (hardware wise). Of course it's not going to look as good as dedicated gaming machines, but the selling point of it is that you can bring the game with you anywhere you go. Can't exactly put a PS4 in your backpack, can you?

Reminds me of the Borderlands 2 port on Vita. I honestly expected it to be drastically changed like that port was. That this is the full game and that it runs so close to a locked 30 astounds me. The folks who ported this should be proud.
Just purchased it. Downloading update and then it's on. I haven't played since 1994 on PC. Looking forward to playing in a few minutes.
Will you guys be doing an analysis of performance enhancements made in the 1.1.1 patch?
Nicholas Bello they already did a video about the patch
Digital Foundry we just figured out that turning off all the post processing effects in Video settings increases resolution and performance. The game looks a lot better now. Check it out.
Also, for Joy-con play, try these settings:
Horizontal : 35%
Vertical: 35%
Look Smoothing: 96%
(Auto-aim off)
I have no problem playing the game now
The portability wins me over!👍
Not to mention DOOM was heavily considered the "Impossible Console Port" also considered a technical marvel once it made it to PS4 and XB1 so to play this on the Switch at any rate is incredible!
Excellent video John :D
In PC terms it's weak, sure, but next to an ageing ARM device?
it's a lot weaker than Xbox One, like 4-5 times, just look at the specs
It is in fact drastically weaker, in orders of magnitude.
And yet, Mario odyssey and Mario kart 8dx look better than literally anything on xbone og
Jeff Grady don't be ridiculous
+GzG92, it looks like you have it figured out. I agree.
this was such a miracle, now lazy devs would only rely on cloud streaming
It doesnt affect me as much, as I have a resolution upscaler HDMI cable plugged in to my switch and everything looks beautiful on it.
I got it for £20 used on Amazon, whilst the "new" price is £40 and I think it still costs the same used.
I think the cable was called Thor or something.
Anyways, it's a very good budget alternative and I implore you to buy it if you want better detail on basically any switch game.
Awesome video I can't wait to play doom on the switch
We now have our answer everyone, on the reason why all the videos showing Doom was played in handheld mode. Well two reasons 1- holy crap they got doom portable and 2- it looks better on the smaller screen.
And here i am waiting for DigitalFoundry to take a look under the hood of Wolfenstein for Switch, so we can see what Voodoo or Dark Magic did Panic Button have to do in order to run on the Switch. Eagerly waiting
So, how do you feel after seeing the video and the minimum resolution of 360p docked? Lol.
This actually looks really nice and it's something for me to consider while thinking of buying a switch
What really makes me not want to buy this port is the lack of motion aiming. I'm so used to it from Splatoon and Zelda, etc, that the lack of it makes the aim super clunky for me and not ideal for a fast paced game like DOOM.
If you want proper games on your kiddie console you need to learn to aim like the big boys do.
Yeah, a missed opportunity to make the Switch port unique. Motion aiming really would have been nice.
+Blackmarsh63
The big boys play with a keyboard and mouse, because dual analog is simply inferior when it comes to First Person Shooters.
+ GrankFarrett
Are you that big of a gamepad fanboy that you choose to go with the "You just suck at it" fallacy? That's like saying critics of Superman 64 just need to step their game up.
I have Doom on PC running at Ultrawide 1080p max settings at 60fps, and i have to say its impressive that it runs on the switch.
I am impresed. Great video DF as always
Half-Life 3 > Steam
Yoidze We're never getting HL3, Valve is making too much money on League of Legends and Steam Sales.
4Horsemen of The Apocalypse Valve doesn't get money from LoL
4Horsemen of The Apocalypse you mean Dota2?
4Horsemen of The Apocalypse League of Legends???????
Everyone here missed the joke when the 4Horsemen said League of Legends... He is taking the piss saying Dota 2 is Valve's version of League of Legends
*to everyone trying to hate on the switch*
Sales disagree with you, your opinion is worthless. Sorry lol
A 4 year old PS4 still outsells it! LOL!
Why are you appealing to popularity to deflect the system of its criticisms?
I haven’t ran into any problems with it...I love being able to take it wherever! Although I am thankful I only paid $10 for it.
Hell yeah looking forward to this!
Thanks for the video! My dev team is talking about what it might take to not only develop for PC and PS4 but also Switch. It's interesting to see all the design choices to get performance manageable on the platform. RIght now our texture size is on average 2k but that seems way too high for the switch it seems haha.
It's a switch you can't expect much from it to be honest and not only that it's crazy how good it looks on the switch
600p! In 2017! Meh, it still looks better than 3d's games, I mean come on let's be real
ikr even tho it's 576p on portable it'd still be better than the ps vita max res (540p)
AH SEU VOU what does it say my name is
Considering the 3DS is 240p (400x240), it's a huge step up. :P
"Here's the worst version of the game, but you could play it on a bus I guess."
eloj You say it like it’s a bad thing
I'd play on my bed tho
You can play it on a bus on a laptop, with better graphics and framerate.
Ever seen Vita ports of Ps3 games? The fact that this can competently play a game that was made with Ps4 hardware in mind says wonders about how far we've come.
Jebediah Springfield I don’t want to use a laptop on a bus because it’s super inconvenient, unless I have to.
You forgot about Zelda breath of the wild update which fixed the frame rate drop issue during intense battles.
I will say ONE positive for Doom on the Switch has is being able to kill demons while screaming along to the soundtrack on the bus!
That Bink video comment, holy crap lol.
Would've appreciated a lowered graphics mode that supports either bumped up resolution to native 720p, or 60 fps locked. This is a pretty restrictive port. (I can see a lot of things that I would be okay with being lowered in graphical fidelity for that sweet 60 fps)
Wow the fact that switch version isn´t equal to consoles and pc has blown my mind! I didn´t expect that at all!
been waiting for this
For doom on switch, they should lower the poly count of the enemies and only raise it when you are looking directly at them.
Great port. Although not a game I'd buy for the switch, it's still cool seeing this run on the console.
It's insane how a tablet can run a real modern console game. Future looks bright for handheld gaming
Was the test comparison done with a ps4 pro or original ps4 or ps4 slim?
StonedZebra 666 original PS4.
The best game of 2016, hell yeah!
This plays really well. But I did love Doom on SNES too, so resolutions and such won't bother me.
Oh, also keep in mind guys that this is a port. The Switch will be able to get far more out of games when they are developed for it from the get-go.
I'd like to see it as glass half full. So well done Panic button! Just give us a patch to rectify the frame pacing issues.
Doom on switch should let us chose to use adaptive vsync. Or no sync with a customisable fps limit.
People who don't, this is a very good and competent port.
that intro :) you guys for DF realy love Doom, dont you.
Look at the switch size and u'll know it's a miracle
People are missing the point here. The fact that the switch can run this game on a handheld device with decent graphics is revolutionary.
Buying this asap.
Looking forward for more Panic Button's projects on Nintendo switch ☺
It’s Doom 2016!! running on a tablet smaller than an ipad...
i actually am watching this on a phone, an as long as the gameplay is mostly fluid i couldn't care less about a lower resolution or less details. it's about the gameplay and having it on the go. i lived killzone on the vita and doom might get me to buy a switch.
TheWolvesCurse yep... Also you must set chromatic aberration off... Looks Much Better now, even in portable mode
Chromatic Aberration is just there for people who absolutely must have it looking the most realistic possible, even at the expense of image quality.
Doom on the go? I'm sold!
If they had ported it to IDtech5 , it would be running @1080p60 in docked mode and 720p60 in portable, while looking much better. Idtech5 must be the most efficient modern game engine, even beyond UE3.
a game that looks that good on the GO gotta get me a copy
Not my type of game but man, I can respect the massive achievement here.
My sekei uvison cable does wonders for this game. Upscales it to 1080p no problem.
I really expected some downgrades by did not expect it to be this low. This kind of makes me wonder what Wolfenstein is going to be like on the switch. 480p Maybe?
The mere fact that you can have this on the go is enough to overlook a lot
Kinda like how FFX on the vita isn't the best looking/running, the fact you're not tied down was enough for me to pick it up
(but the other ps2 ports for the vita however...)
Best Soundtrack ever! \m/ \m/
You sir got another subscriber
This is my dream future. Full triple AAA games on the go
Great video as always but it disturbs me the way you center the guns XD
hey can you do a video comparison of with the Chromatic Aberration setting on & off for Switch version?
i noticed that all of the screenshots & video are using default settings with it on. but i think Fast RMX & Doom for switch look better with it off.
Was the frame pacing issue fixed?
