Juan Tizol (22 January 1900 - 23 April 1984) was a Puerto Rican trombonist and composer. He was born in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. Tizol got the call to join the Ellington band in the summer of 1929. Juan also was a band composer. His best known compositions, "Caravan" (1936) and "Perdido" (1941). Tizol was responsible for bringing Latin influences into the Ellington band with compositions such as "Moonlight Fiesta", "Jubilesta", "Conga Brava", and others.
Thelonious Monk has an extraordinary version of Caravan played / recorded live in Germany in 1969 and is here on UA-cam. Caravan was first recorded in 1936 by a small group of musicians from the Ellington orchestra, session directed by Barney Bigard- clarinet and his Jazzopators-. Ellington has many versions of this tune. It is possible Ellington influenced Monk's style however, his style was incomparably unique and noteworthy of seeing him play Caravan on the version I mentioned, specially his left hand executing superb independence and constancy of rhythm.

Given Duke's prolific output over his career as a leader, it's easy to forget that he was a very talented pianist.
