Electric Road Trip: 500 miles in a Tesla Model X

- Let's go for a Tesla road trip!
This week, I wanted to take a trip just to show how easy EV road trips are. I also wanted to see if it's possible for a tall dude like me to sleep in the Tesla Model X in camp mode.
Autopilot is a game changer for long drives. It made this experience so much easier. If you road trip in an electric vehicle, you'll definitely want autopilot, and probably the Full Self Driving (FSD) option too so that it automatically passes the slower traffic and takes the highway interchanges and exits.
I enjoyed this trip so much that I am already planning my next one. We bought our used 2018 Model X P100D in November, and already in less than a year it's a lot better at driving itself.
This time in 2022 will probably be a much bigger leap in FSD, which if Tesla is able to train Autopilot deeply enough, will allow the car to essentially never need to be manually driven unless you just want to drive.

First ever Tesla camping video I have watched. That was my favorite part. Hotel parking lot is a good choice.
Haha! It was a nice proof of concept mission to make sure it works, knowing it's possible opens up lots of potential adventures
That's so cool, bro. sleeping in the car, if you upgrade your sleep mattress, that will be great!
Yeah bro it was too basic - only got about 5hr of sleep. Needs to be more comfy
The new 5 or 7 seat folds flat, even better for camping!!! Just not the 6, as they are electric captain’s chairs on the second row.
Yeah - my seat configuration is the worst one in the X for camping for SURE haha! Hoping for more room to stretch in the Cybertruck
Nice car Model X great video and he treated him self to air pods pro Max nice 👍
Haha yeah that moon phase SPY Put ended up printing. I'm still using the AirPods; love them
Will you be buying the refreshed model x?? It is cool
Next one will be the trimotor Cybertruck - that's my all-time maximum dream car haha! I ordered early so hopefully it'll be one of the first ones in Nashville
@@remboldt Damnnn....that's sick!!! Congrats man!
@@thaneeshsubramaniam8913 it'll probably be about a year or 18 months before I get it, but you can bet there will be videos on my channel as soon as I do! lol!
What camera setup do you use for recording
this was shot with iPhone 12 Pro Max and a cheap tripod. thanks for watching!
Love the vid!
Thanks for watching! Note that this EV is one of the most power-hungry ones Tesla offers - so if you go with a Model Y or a Model 3, expect to spend even less time charging
Excellent!
thank you :)
All the thinking about where to charge and how long and how much to charge just ruins the road trip experience for me. Road trips to me should be the ultimate feeling of freedom! That feeling of knowing I can go anywhere I want, and the taste of gas station cheap coffee and hot food also makes me feel happy! Not to mention my baldder is pretty much non-existent which i gotta pee like every hour LOL(In some places they don't let you use the restroom if you are not a customer). I can never drive an EV.
(Edited for typos)
The Tesla tells you where to charge next, there's no thinking needed. I just kept all these details for the video because people ask me about it all the time haha. I just drove a 1700 mile trip from Nashville, TN down to the border of Mexico and around Texas, and had absolutely no problem charging. There were also no bathroom issues either as the superchargers are pretty much always next to 2 or more public bathrooms (often a gas station, so you can still get that coffee). Don't rule it out yet mate! I think you'd actually love it
Massive Frunk.
so massive!
40 minutes to charge? I’ve been thinking about getting a Tesla. But can’t compare taking 5 minutes to fill up on gas to 40. That seems like quite a headache.
How often do you go on long trips? Having a 10.5 hour trip become a 12.5 hour trip is imo a VERY fair tradeoff (especially with autopilot) if you start every day with a charged battery from your garage charger. Unless you take a ton of trips, then you'll actually be SAVING time because you never have to stop to fill up on normal commute/errand days
I live 2 hrs ish east from kalamazoo lol
✨👍👏✌🎶👌
Bit hard to hear you over the loud music. Good video though.
Yeah still figuring out the mix. Sounded fine in Premiere Pro but got worse after upload. Thanks for watching!!
@@remboldt A few questions. How many miles do you get on a full charge? I also have the 6 seat option and was surprised you were able to sleep back there. Did you have to curl your feet up?
@@terrification around 220mi or so on a full charge - though I don’t recommend using a full charge. I just charge it to 85% for daily use, 100% right before a trip like this, then for the trip stop to charge when it’s down around 15% or less and charge to 60-70%. It just charges so much faster in that range than on the battery’s edges, so less waiting time. It’s not like a gas tank that fills at the same speed the whole time you pump gas. As for sleeping, the middle row seats can move wayyyyyy further forward than in most cars - so I set up some boxes on the floor behind the mid row seat and had plenty of room, surprisingly
@@remboldt Thanks! I know the 22's knock a bit off of range so i was curious to see where you were at. I rarely charge to 100% either. For DD I do about 90% and same as you 100% for trips and I leave as soon as it hits 100. I'm going to attempt the bed setup and move the seats are far forward as they go, thanks for the tip.
@@terrification cheers! Miles of smiles to you and yours, fellow Tesla fam!!
